Residential radon in Peru: challenges for health surveillance and lung cancer prevention.

The Journal of Genetics, started by William Bateson in 1910, played a distinguished role in the early years of genetics. However, it stopped publishing in 1978. The Indian Academy of Sciences revived it in 1985, and has published it regularly since then. To commemorate this landmark, I highlight one of the 17 articles published that year. 'The isolation and genetic analysis of a Caenorhabditis elegans… X-chromosome balancer' by András Fodor and Péter Deak, of the Institute of Genetics, Biological Research Centre, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Szeged, Hungary. More than the 43 citations garner

Emerging intraoperative diagnostic modalities for fracture-related infection: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Fracture-related infection (FRI) remains a challenge in orthopedic trauma care. Conventional culturing of deep intraoperative samples is the current diagnostic standard, but confirmation occurs postoperatively, delaying targeted treatment. Real-time intraoperative diagnostic techniques may offer earlier, more precise detection and improved surgical decision-making, but their clinical value remains uncertain and requires further investigation. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA-ScR guidelines using the JBI PCC framework. Studies were included if they

Toward process-based inventory data for Portland clinker substitutes.

BACKGROUND: The World Trade Center (WTC) attacks on September 11, 2001 (9/11) resulted in over 2700 fatalities and thousands injured. Injury on 9/11 has been identified as a risk factor for physical and mental health conditions, but the reasons for this are not well understood. In a population exposed to 9/11 and since followed, an in-depth study on the impacts of injury on 9/11 was conducted to identify factors that contribute to long-term functional issues. This report sought to examine factors influencing participation, participant recall of injury status over time, and determinants of inju

States, humanitarian advocacy, and crisis: persuasion, mobilization, and denunciation.

BACKGROUND: Allergic, especially anaphylactic, reactions during immunoglobulin replacement therapy are rare, but their pathophysiology and classification remain ambiguous. Recent findings show positive results of skin tests with commercially available immunoglobulins, but target antigens and responsible compounds of the tested immunoglobulins have not been strictly identified. CASE DESCRIPTION AND FINDINGS: Four adult patients with recently diagnosed common variable immunodeficiency qualified for standard subcutaneous immunoglobulin replacement therapy regimen. They had no history of receivin

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Digital Nerve Repair With Flexor Tendon Injury: Conduits are Less Effective.

BACKGROUND: Digital nerve injuries resulting in gaps not amendable to direct coaptation are frequently reconstructed utilizing conduits or processed nerve allograft (PNA). Concurrent flexor tendon repair necessitates the incorporation of a postoperative rehab protocol. The effects of this early mobilization on digital nerve regeneration following PNA or conduit reconstruction are not known. METHODS: Patient data collected during the RECON study included static 2-point discrimination (S2PD) and Semmes-Weinstein Monofilament testing following digital nerve reconstruction for gap defects of 5 to

Cryotherapy-Induced Iatrogenic Frostbite on Distal Digit: Case Report and Review of Management Strategies.

Cryotherapy is a widely utilized topical treatment for various dermatological conditions. While generally safe and effective, it carries potential risks, such as frostbite injury. Frostbite, a vascular condition causing skin and tissue freezing, is usually associated with prolonged exposure to freezing environments. Certain populations, like military personnel navigating frigid terrains, face an increased risk of frostbite and other cold-weather injuries. In this case, we present an unusual instance of iatrogenic frostbite in a 23-year-old active duty United States Navy Sailor. The patient req

Patient- and Provider-Perceived Barriers to Reconstructive Surgery for Patients With Upper Limb Spasticity.

PURPOSE: The benefits of upper-extremity reconstructive surgery for patients with spastic deformities are well documented, but a small portion of eligible patients undergo surgery. We sought to determine perceptions of upper-extremity reconstructive surgery among brain injury patients and nonsurgical providers to identify potential barriers to surgical evaluation. METHODS: Electronic medical records at a referral center were reviewed for patients diagnosed with upper limb spasticity following brain injury. A patient-specific survey was distributed by email to all eligible patients. An anonymo

From Sheep to Sling: Pediatric Injuries Due to Rodeo Mutton Bustin'.

BACKGROUND: Mutton Bustin' was developed as a safer alternative to rough stock rodeo events such as bull riding to allow kids to participate in the rodeo. Children hold on to the bareback of a running sheep until they fall, competing to see who can ride the longest. While reports of injuries due to other rodeo events are well described in the literature, there are no reports of Mutton Bustin'-associated injuries. We present a case series describing the injury patterns in Mutton Busters who presented to our institution. METHODS: Pediatric patients presenting to a single tertiary pediatric hosp

Application of Orem's self-care model in postoperative rehabilitation of patients undergoing digit replantation.

Digit replantation is often caused by sudden trauma, with 75% of amputated patients being low-income, low-education workers, and adding societal pressure. Orem's self-care model emphasizes self-care and may be an optimal nursing model for digit replantation, but its clinical application and research are limited. This study explores Orem's self-care model's impact on digit replantation. This single-center retrospective observational study included 389 patients who underwent digit replantation in our hospital from June 2019 to November 2023. Based on previous nursing methods, patients were divid

A high-performance brain-computer interface for finger decoding and quadcopter game control in an individual with paralysis.

People with paralysis express unmet needs for peer support, leisure activities and sporting activities. Many within the general population rely on social media and massively multiplayer video games to address these needs. We developed a high-performance, finger-based brain-computer-interface system allowing continuous control of three independent finger groups, of which the thumb can be controlled in two dimensions, yielding a total of four degrees of freedom. The system was tested in a human research participant with tetraplegia due to spinal cord injury over sequential trials requiring finge
