The effect of sedation methods on early postoperative cognitive decline in patients undergoing hip fracture surgery with spinal anesthesia: a prospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: Early postoperative cognitive decline is common in elderly patients undergoing hip fracture surgery and may contribute to delayed recovery and diminished long-term independence. Although spinal anesthesia is associated with reduced systemic cognitive burden, intraoperative sedation remains necessary and may influence neurocognitive outcomes. Dexmedetomidine and ketamine are sedative agents with proposed neuroprotective properties; however, their comparative cognitive safety in the context of spinal anesthesia remains poorly understood. Thus, our study aim to compare early postoperativ

Gamified electromyographic biofeedback for people with tetraplegia from SCI is enjoyable, results in high-dosage therapy, increases muscle electrical activity, and may improve arm function, a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with tetraplegia due to spinal cord injury (SCI) place a high priority on improving arm function for their independence and quality of life. Animal studies have shown a therapeutic benefit of much higher therapeutic dosages than obtained in clinical practice. Electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback is validated in people with SCI and can produce high dosage therapy. The goal of this pilot study is to test if gamified electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback can address this need by quantifying (1) participant enjoyment, (2) dosage of muscle activations, (3) increases in muscle a

Firearm-Related Upper-Limb Injuries in Children: An 8-Year Single Institution Analysis.

PURPOSE: Pediatric firearm-related injuries are rising, reflecting an ongoing public health concern and burden on the health care system. However, studies examining regional gunshot wound (GSW) trends among children are scarce. We evaluated upper-limb injuries from GSWs at our state's sole level-1 trauma center over 8 years. We hypothesize there would be an increase in upper limb ballistic injuries in our pediatric population and that understanding these trends may lead to improved supportive care and interventions aimed at mitigating future occurrences. METHODS: A retrospective chart review
