Effects of azelnidipine, a calcium channel blocker, in a rat femur fracture model.

BACKGROUND: Fractures are an important public health problem as they reduce quality of life due to the occurrence of pain and complications. Osteoblasts originate from mesenchymal stem cells and play a vital role in bone formation. They also contain voltage-gated calcium channels. Azelnidipine is a dihydropyridine-derivative blocker of L- and T-type calcium channels. The signalling process involving the L-type calcium channel is important for the function of osteoblasts. Nevertheless, the impact of dihydropyridine chemicals on bone metabolism remains largely unexplored. To the best of our know

Development and external validation of a preoperative prediction model for in-hospital major adverse cardiovascular events after hip fracture surgery in older adults: a retrospective two-center study.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with hip fracture are vulnerable to postoperative major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) during hospitalization. However, early risk stratification remains difficult because existing assessments may require complex or late-available information. A simple model based on variables routinely available before surgery may support perioperative decision-making. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective two-center cohort study of patients ≥ 60 years who underwent surgery for traumatic hip fracture at 2 hospitals in China. The development cohort included 935 patients treated

Smoking and injury severity score predict major complications after surgical treatment of ipsilateral proximal and shaft femoral fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Ipsilateral proximal and shaft femoral fractures are rare, high-energy injuries associated with substantial morbidity. Evidence on predictors of adverse outcomes after surgical treatment remains limited. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study at a tertiary trauma center including all skeletally mature patients who underwent surgical treatment for ipsilateral proximal femoral fractures (femoral neck or trochanteric region) associated with femoral shaft fractures between January 2019 and December 2024. The primary outcome was a composite of major complications, includi

Single-Application Biobrane Versus Nanocrystalline Silver Dressings for Bilateral Mid-Dermal Petrol Flash Burns: An Intra-Patient Split-Limb Case Report.

Biobrane (Smith & Nephew, Hull, UK) is a biosynthetic bilaminate dressing used for superficial partial-thickness burns, where it provides single-application coverage until re-epithelialisation. Comparative data in adults with mixed-depth burns are limited, and within-patient comparisons are rare. We report a man in his early 50s with type 2 diabetes mellitus who sustained 21% total body surface area (TBSA) circumferential mixed superficial and mid-dermal burns to both lower limbs in a petrol flash explosion. At primary debridement the left limb was covered with a single application of Biobrane

Nonoperative Management of an Acute Complete Achilles Tendon Rupture With Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Extracellular Vesicles: A Case Report.

An acute complete rupture of the Achilles tendon with a large intertendinous gap is conventionally regarded as a surgical indication, yet operative repair carries a significant burden on wound-healing and potential for neurovascular complications, whereas nonoperative care may be limited by re-rupture and incomplete functional recovery. Human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (hUC-MSCs) and their secreted extracellular vesicles (EVs) exert immunomodulatory, pro-angiogenic and pro-tenogenic paracrine effects that could support tendon healing. A healthy 45-year-old recreation

The Impact of Wound-Related Pain on Quality of Life, Psychosocial Well-Being and Pain Beliefs in Individuals With Chronic Lower Limb Wounds.

Chronic lower limb wounds are frequently accompanied by persistent wound-related pain (WRP), which can impair physical functioning, emotional well-being and coping capacity. Despite its prevalence, the multidimensional impact of WRP remains under-recognised in routine wound care. This study examined the relationship of WRP on quality of life (QoL), physical health, psychosocial well-being and pain-related beliefs. A cross-sectional survey of 105 patients attending an outpatient wound clinic was conducted. Participants were stratified by the presence or absence of WRP. Validated self-report ins

A Doubly Robust Approach to Evaluating the Impact of Hospital Length of Stay on Post-Fracture Recovery in Older Adults With Cognitive Impairment.

For older adults diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias, recovery outcomes after a hip fracture are often poor, with extended hospital stays and prolonged rehabilitation being common. This paper examines the impact of hospitalization on post-discharge outcomes, focusing on the differential effects of hospital length of stay on recovery, measured by the number of healthy days spent at home (DAH). Our analysis faces important analytical challenges, including baseline confounding, missing outcome, and the complexity of assessing a continuous exposure. To address these issues, we

A Systematic Review of Complications Following Elective Foot and Ankle Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Complications following elective foot and ankle surgery are a significant source of morbidity and may impair recovery. Evidence is often procedure specific, limiting a broader understanding. This review aimed to synthesize complication profiles, risk factors, and mitigation strategies across elective procedures. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHL were searched for studies published between 1 January 2020 and 30 June 2025. Eligible studies included adults undergoing elective foot and ankle surgery and reporting postoperative complications. Data were extracted on complication typ

Baseline characteristics and bone mineral density changes associated with lower fracture risk in osteoporosis: a retrospective cohort study.

Late diagnosis of osteoporosis with already existing low-energy fractures, often incorrect reassessment of fracture risk and suboptimal therapy is associated with significant unmet needs in high-risk patients. Predictors for fracture risk assessment are the basis of the long-term strategy for monitoring, stratifying patients and treating osteoporosis. To evaluate whether changes in total bone mineral density (BMD) of the lumbar spine and BMD of the femoral neck over 36 months were associated with transition to a lower estimated fracture risk category after adjustment for baseline patient chara

Proximal Scaphoid Pole Reconstruction Utilizing Ipsilateral Proximal Hamate Autograft.

BACKGROUND: Proximal pole scaphoid fractures complicated by nonunion and osteonecrosis present a challenging scenario with few good reconstructive options, especially when the proximal fragment is small or fragmented1-4. The use of an ipsilateral proximal hamate osteochondral autograft has emerged as a promising technique for reconstructing the proximal scaphoid pole, with the potential to restore carpal mechanics while avoiding the morbidity associated with free vascularized bone grafts or distant autograft sites. DESCRIPTION: The procedure involves replacing the diseased proximal scaphoid w

Weight-bearing impact after surgically treated proximal femur fracture in patients aged 65 years and older: systematic review.

The incidence of proximal femur fractures is increasing among older adults. Although surgical treatment is often required to restore pre-fracture functional status, the optimal postoperative weight-bearing strategy remains controversial. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the impact of early weight-bearing after surgically treated proximal femur fractures in patients aged 65 years and older. A systematic search of Medline (via Ovid and PubMed), Embase, Scopus, Google Scholar, and the grey literature was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines for studies published between
