INTRODUCTION: Distal femur fractures represent a challenging injury due to their proximity to the knee joint and the need to restore limb alignment and function. Surgical management has evolved with techniques such as retrograde femoral nailing (RFN) and minimally invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis (MIPPO). Both techniques aim to achieve stable fixation while preserving soft tissue and vascularity. We performed an analysis on both groups (30 patients each), and our primary objectives compared were radiological union time, weight-bearing, and functional outcome using NEER's score. Our s

Geriatric femoral neck fractures are associated with high mortality. Early surgery within 48 hours improves survival, whereas delayed arthroplasty is associated with a 41% increase in mortality. Multimorbidity in this population often prolongs preoperative optimization, thereby exacerbating perioperative risk. Current evidence indicates that 5%-10% of patients with hip fractures have concomitant severe aortic stenosis (AS), which independently increases the risk of anesthesia-related complications. Perioperative acute myocardial infarction further increases mortality risk, making cardiac manag

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Busch-Hoffa fractures are rare intra-articular coronal plane fractures of the femoral condyle that often remain unnoticed, particularly when complications develop. Due to their instability and risk of long-term problems, these fractures require immediate anatomical reduction and stable fixation. The occurrence of a Busch-Hoffa fracture in conjunction with patellar dislocation is extremely rare and has been rarely reported in the current literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case involving a 21-year-old male who experienced a Bagaria type 2 Hoffa fracture of t

INTRODUCTION: Femoral shaft fractures are recognized complications of total hip arthroplasty (THA); however, femoral cortical perforation is a rare entity and is most often diagnosed intraoperatively or in the early post-operative period. Delayed diagnosis is uncommon and may result in serious complications. This report presents a case of femoral shaft perforation diagnosed 15 days after primary THA and highlights the importance of two-view radiographic evaluation.
CASE REPORT: A 68-year-old woman presented to our outpatient clinic for routine suture removal 15 days after primary right THA pe

INTRODUCTION: Femoral neck fractures in patients with ipsilateral above-knee amputations are uncommon and present unique diagnostic, biomechanical, and surgical challenges. The absence of a distal limb limits fracture reduction, intraoperative manipulation, and implant positioning, making standard treatment techniques difficult to perform. Although several fixation and arthroplasty strategies have been described for lower-extremity amputees, reports detailing primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) for displaced femoral neck fractures in young above-knee amputees remain scarce. This case highligh

INTRODUCTION: Posterior dislocation of the hip associated with an ipsilateral subtrochanteric femur fracture is a rare and technically challenging injury pattern, most commonly seen after high-energy trauma such as road traffic accidents. The associated proximal femoral fracture disrupts the normal femoral lever arm, making closed reduction difficult or impossible and often necessitating open reduction. Delay in diagnosis or treatment may result in complications such as avascular necrosis of the femoral head, post-traumatic arthritis, sciatic nerve injury, and poor functional outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Although rare, mechanical failure of fixation in trochanteric fractures can lead to significant morbidity, particularly when medial migration of the cephalic screw occurs, posing a serious risk of life-threatening injury to intrapelvic vascular and visceral structures.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of severe intrapelvic migration of a cephalic screw in a 79-year-old patient following short trochanteric fixation nail advanced fixation for an unstable trochanteric fracture (Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen/Orthopaedic Trauma Association 31-A2). Tumoral calcinosis (TC), a rare disease characterized by calcified mass formation in peri-articular soft tissue, manifests clinically as fractures, pain, and limited range of motion. In hemodialysis patients, severe hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia are major causes of the condition, and correcting these metabolic disorders reportedly induces its regression. Herein, we report the case of a 46-year-old man on maintenance hemodialysis who developed TC that regressed following etelcalcetide therapy despite the absence of severe hyperphosphatemia. The patient had started hemodialysis at age 32,

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of morbidity in middle-aged and older adults with hip fracture. This study examined the association between the hemoglobin glycation index (HGI) and CVD prevalence in this population.
METHODS: Data were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine the association between HGI and prevalent CVD among participants with a history of hip fracture. Sensitivity analyzes and subgroup anal

PURPOSE: Periprosthetic femoral fractures (PFFs) are an increasingly common complication of hip arthroplasty. A poorly defined scenario is a new femoral fracture after a previously treated PFF has united, which we term a peri-periprosthetic femoral fracture.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 154 surgically treated PFF episodes in patients aged over 65 years at our institution between 2011 and 2021. A peri-periprosthetic fracture was defined as a new acute femoral fracture after documented radiographic union of a previously treated PFF. Clinical, surgical, and radiographic data were reviewe

INTRODUCTION: Optimal femoral stem fixation for hemiarthroplasty in older adults with displaced intracapsular fractures remains controversial. Cemented stems may reduce mechanical failure, but cementation carries risks. This study compared mortality and complications after cemented versus uncemented hemiarthroplasty in patients aged 75 years or older.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of consecutive patients aged 75 years or older who underwent hemiarthroplasty for intracapsular fracture between January 2015 and April 2022. Patients were grouped by stem fixation and followed until d

BACKGROUND: Cisplatin is an anti-neoplastic treatment widely used to treat pediatric cancers. Negative effects of cisplatin treatment on bone mass have previously been reported; however, long-term effects of cisplatin on skeletal health and potential sex differences have largely been unexplored.
METHODS: Four-week-old BALB/c mice were treated with cisplatin (4 mg/kg, intraperitoneally, twice weekly for four weeks). At 13 weeks of age, we assessed structural changes in the tibiofemoral region using microcomputed tomography. We also quantified, using immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Untreated osteoporosis often leads to subsequent fractures associated with high morbidity and mortality. In the Czech Republic, approximately 15,000 patients are hospitalized annually with femoral neck fractures, with up to 25% mortality within the first year after a hip fracture. Establishing a coordinated post-fracture care program, such as Fracture Liaison Services (FLS), may substantially reduce this burden. In the FLS model, the role of the coordinator is pivotal. This study aimed to assess baseline adherence to national postfracture care guidelines and to evaluate n

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative medical complications substantially affect outcomes after bipolar hemiarthroplasty (BHA) for displaced femoral neck fractures, with an impact comparable to surgical factors. This study aimed to identify risk factors for postoperative medical complications, focusing on comorbidities, polypharmacy, and fracture pattern.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 310 hips in 297 patients undergoing BHA. Baseline characteristics, comorbidities, and medication profiles were evaluated using the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), Elixhauser Comorbidity

UNLABELLED: Contrary to reports on under-treatment in persons with Parkinson's disease, our study found similar anti-osteoporosis medication usage before and after their hip fractures among Finns with and without Parkinson's disease. Additional preventive measures may be needed to mitigate the high risk of hip fractures among persons with Parkinson's disease.
PURPOSE: Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with a doubled risk of hip fracture. However, previous reports suggest under-recognition of osteoporosis among persons with PD. Our study aimed to assess the annual prevalence of anti-osteo

UNLABELLED: People with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) accumulate factors that weaken bone. In over two million adults, fracture risk rose stepwise as diabetes progressed, with the steepest increase for hip fractures. A simple progression score using routine clinical data may help flag patients who need earlier bone-protective care.
PURPOSE: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are often exposed to multiple factors contributing to bone fragility-such as poor glycemic control, long duration of exposure to hyperglycemia, and comorbidities. Because these factors often accumulate over t
