[Modern approach in management of patients with lower third face lacerated wounds].

BACKGROUND: The use of a full-thickness donor flap for lip defect closure requires a fundamental reconsideration. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to develop and demonstrate the effectiveness of an original bioengineering construct using a combination of a free connective tissue graft, a free periauricular skin flap, and the patient's own platelet-rich plasma, rich in fibrin, for lip defect reconstruction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 50 patients with lacerated lip wounds with soft tissue defects. PRF in the APRF modification was obtained from the patient's venous blood. The

Severe Orofacial Manifestations in Monkeypox Infection.

A 30-year-old man with recent diagnosis of HIV-infection was seen in the hospital, because of a 1-month history of swollen lips, painful oral mucosa ulcers, cervical lymph nodes and skin lesions. The medical history showed a previous patient contact with 10 subjects, with positivity for Monkeypox virus in 8 subjects. A week later, he began with lesions on the genitals, managed with acyclovir, and subsequent development of manifestations in the mouth and skin, with dissemination to the entire body. He was admitted to our clinic for increased volume in penis and scrotum, and a disseminated derma

Metabolic Implications of PCOS.

BACKGROUND: In children, necrotizing pneumonia (NP) is an uncommon, severe complication of pneumonia. It is characterized by destruction of the underlying lung parenchyma resulting in multiple small, thin-walled cavities and is often accompanied by empyema and bronchopleural fistulae. REVIEW: NP in children was first reported in children in 1994, and since then there has been a gradual increase in cases, which is partially explained by greater physician awareness and use of contrast computed tomography (CT) scans, and by temporal changes in circulating respiratory pathogens and antibiotic pre

Sketches of chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) hoo's: vowels by any other name?

In human speech, the close back rounded vowel /u/ (the vowel in "boot") is articulated with the tongue arched toward the dorsal boundary of the hard palate, with the pharyngeal cavity open. Acoustic and perceptual properties of chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) hoo's are similar to those of the human vowel /u/. However, the vocal tract morphology of chimpanzees likely limits their phonetic capabilities, so that it is unlikely, or even impossible, that their articulation is comparable to that of a human. To determine how qualities of the vowel /u/ may be achieved given the chimpanzee vocal tract, we

Merkel cells and keratinocytes in oral mucosa are activated by mechanical stimulation.

The detection of mechanical qualities of foodstuffs is essential for nutrient acquisition, evaluation of food freshness, and bolus formation during mastication. However, the mechanisms through which mechanosensitive cells in the oral cavity transmit mechanical information from the periphery to the brain are not well defined. We hypothesized Merkel cells, which are epithelial mechanoreceptors and important for pressure and texture sensing in the skin, can be mechanically activated in the oral cavity. Using live-cell calcium imaging, we recorded Merkel cell activity in ex vivo gingival and palat

Palatal mucormycosis in a 2-month-old child: A very rare case report and a literature review.

A 2-month-old Syrian male child presented with a large blackish ulcerating lesion on his hard palate, along with fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and milk regurgitation from the nose. The child was diagnosed with palatal mucormycosis by histopathology and underwent treatment with liposomal amphotericin B and surgical debridement. However, despite treatment, the child's condition deteriorated, and he died from respiratory failure. An underlying immunodeficiency was not diagnosed, but the family history revealed several deaths of the child's siblings at very early ages due to poorly documented complic

Oral Gastric Heterotopia: First Reported Case in the Hard Palate.

Gastric heterotopia is characterized by the presence of mature gastric tissue outside the stomach, yet its occurrence in the palate has not been previously documented. We describe a case of gastric heterotopia in the hard palate of an elderly female patient, presenting as a swollen mass with associated secretion. Given the patient's age and clinical symptoms, a presumptive diagnosis of a malignant tumor originating from the minor salivary glands was made. An incisional biopsy of the mass revealed gastric heterotopia. Subsequently, the extended excision of the lesion was performed, leading to t

Complete denture palatal rugae design impact on satisfaction and quality of life.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the impact of three complete denture palatal rugae designs on participants' satisfaction and oral-health-related quality of life. BACKGROUND: Complete dentures palatal rugea are usually polished to a smooth finish, which can affect the patient's adaptation. Roughening or keeping an opening in the rugae area to replicate the natural sensation of the palatal rugae has been suggested but lacks clinical evidence. METHODS: This randomised crossover trial included participants with complete dentures randomly allocated to six sequences. Each sequence alternated between polish

The "great imitator": IgG4-related disease of the oral cavity. Two case reports and scoping review.

This study aimed to review the lesser-known intraoral manifestations of immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD). In this paper we report an unprecedented case of oral IgG4-RD mimicking angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (ALHE), and another case presenting as plasma cell gingivitis. We then performed a scoping review of published cases of IgG4-RD involving the oral cavity. The following data were collected for each case: age, sex, intraoral site(s) involved, clinical appearance, imaging features, serum IgG4 values, histopathology, treatment, and follow-up duration. Fifty-one cases

Off-Label Use of an External Hand Fixator for Craniomaxillofacial Fractures-An Anatomical Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: The lack of resources limits the treatment of craniomaxillofacial fractures (CMF) in low-income countries (LIC). Therefore, Barton bandages and/or interdental wiring are considered in these regions. Fracture reduction is maintained by permanent occlusion for 6 weeks, which often leads to limited compliance and dissatisfying results. The aim of this cadaver-based study is to evaluate the feasibility of the use of an external face fixator (EFF) for the treatment of CMF, its biomechanical values and to define the optimal pin insertion points and angles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An AO h

Chemoradiation to the submental muscles alters hyoid movement during swallowing in a rat model.

Hyolaryngeal dysfunction is a commonly reported swallowing problem after chemoradiation treatment for head and neck cancer. The displacement of the hyolaryngeal complex during swallowing protects the airway and assists in opening the upper esophageal sphincter. Activation of the submental muscles, specifically the mylohyoid and geniohyoid muscles, is thought to facilitate movement of the hyoid. The purpose of this study was to determine if targeted radiation to the submental muscles given concurrently with chemotherapy alters hyolaryngeal displacement 1 mo after treatment. We hypothesized that

Characterization of risks and pathogenesis of respiratory diseases caused by rural atmospheric PM2.5.

Forty-six percent of the world's population resides in rural areas, the majority of whom belong to vulnerable groups. They mainly use cheap solid fuels for cooking and heating, which release a large amount of PM2.5 and cause adverse effects to human health. PM2.5 exhibits urban-rural differences in its health risk to the respiratory system. However, the majority of research on this issue has focused on respiratory diseases induced by atmospheric PM2.5 in urban areas, while rural areas have been ignored for a long time, especially the pathogenesis of respiratory diseases. This is not helpful fo

Early Results on the Efficacy of Demineralized Bone Matrix, Bone Morphogenic Protein, and Freeze-dried Bone Chips in Alveolar Cleft Repair.

BACKGROUND: Conventional treatment for alveolar cleft repair is done using autologous iliac crest alveolar bone graft (ABG). However, this method may not be ideal in all patients. Analysis of the efficacy of a mixture of demineralized bone matrix (DBX), bone morphogenic protein (rhBMP-2), and freeze-dried bone chips (FDBC) as an alternative for alveolar cleft repair was performed. METHODS: Consecutive patients from August 2019 to June 2022 undergoing early alveolar cleft repair, concomitant hard palate and alveolar cleft repair, secondary alveolar cleft repair, and regrafting from a previousl
