This case report aims to increase awareness about foreign body (FB) impaction in the pediatric palate. The significance of this clinical entity lies in the fact that it is frequently misdiagnosed as a palatal fistula or mass. Patients are therefore subjected to a variety of unnecessary investigations, for example, computed tomography scans and x-rays. In this case report, a 13-month-old boy was referred for a newly developed oronasal fistula. Clinical evaluation, however, correctly identified a FB impacted in the palatal vault. The FB (button cap) was successfully removed under general anesthe

Spindle cell malignancies of the oral cavity are uncommon and pose considerable diagnostic challenges due to overlapping histomorphology and immunohistochemical features. Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) with heterologous differentiation is particularly rare. Moreover, its coexistence with a synchronous hematological malignancy such as small cell lymphoma (SLL) is exceedingly unusual. A male 62 year, presented with a progressively enlarging, pigmented, ulcero-proliferative painless mass over the right upper alveolus extending to the hard palate. Imaging revealed a heterogeneousl

BACKGROUND: Surgery is the primary therapy for hard palate cancer, but this sometime worsens oral function and unavailable for patients with several comorbidities. Radiotherapy represents an alternative curative treatment option to preserve oral function, however, there are few reports on the use of radiotherapy for squamous cell carcinoma of the hard palate (SCCHP). High-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy has been known as an effective treatment for SCCHP, which seems to be less invasive when mold technique is used. In our hospital, the HDR customized mold brachytherapy (HDR- customized MBT) is av

BACKGROUND: Accurate identification of anatomical landmarks on panoramic radiographs is a foundational yet challenging skill in dentistry. Traditional didactic teaching often requires supplementation to achieve proficiency. This study evaluates and compares the efficacy of three supplementary learning modalities: self-directed learning (SDL), traditional manual tracing (MT), and an AI-driven approach using ChatGPT.
METHODS: In this prospective study, 63 third-year dental students were assigned to one of three groups (n = 21 each): SDL, MT, or ChatGPT-assisted learning. Following a theoretical

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical outcomes and supportive-care needs in photoimmunotherapy (PIT) restricted to oral sites in a multicentre real-world cohort.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 40 consecutive patients with unresectable, locally recurrent head and neck cancer undergoing PIT between 1 January 2021 and 31 August 2024. The oral-site subgroup comprised 12 patients receiving ≥1 illumination to the oral cavity (tongue, gingiva, buccal mucosa, floor of mouth, hard palate, or flap). The primary endpoint was objective response rate (ORR). Secondary endpoints included time-to-treatment f

Reconstruction of extensive midfacial defects poses significant challenges due to the need for simultaneous restoration of function and appearance. In this report, the authors present a case of an extensive midfacial defect following nasal cavity cancer resection, in which favorable functional and aesthetic outcomes were achieved through reconstruction using three free flaps. The first free flap-a thoracodorsal artery perforator flap combined with scapular bone was used for hard palate reconstruction; the second, a forearm flap prefabricated with costal cartilage was used to reconstruct the ex

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of repairing acquired palatal defects using palatal island rotation flaps (PRFs) or anteriorly based dorsal tongue flaps (aTFs).
METHODS: In total, 39 patients (23 males and 16 females) aged 22 to 74 years (median: 48.4 y) were included. According to the grid-based palatal horizontal plane palatal defect classification system, palatal defects were divided into 3 classes (classes I, II, and III); hard palate defects (classes I and II) were further subdivided into 3 subtypes (a, b, and c). Medium and large-sized defects accounted for

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between palate morphology, masticatory muscle thickness, choanae structure, and sphenoidale foramina in individuals with temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD), and to determine how variations in these parameters affect temporomandibular joint (TMJ) function.
METHODS: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 36 individuals with TMD and 36 healthy controls, aged 18 to 69 years, were retrospectively analyzed. The possible relationships between TMD and the morphometry of the hard palate, nasi choanae, and sphenoidale foramina were ev

Infants may place various objects in their mouths during the developmental process, which can sometimes involve life-threatening risks, such as choking. We describe the case of a 1-year 3-month-old female with a foreign body in the oral cavity. She was referred to our hospital with chief complaints of suspected supernumerary teeth and blisters, and the initial examination revealed blister-like swelling and a white swelling on the hard palate. Intraoral photographs were obtained and examined from multiple angles, revealing findings that resembled a character. Careful re-examination showed that

BACKGROUND: Oral cavity cancers are generally considered etiologically similar, with a majority (>75%) attributable to smoking/alcohol. Yet, incidence trends for oral cavity cancers have recently diverged in the United States and several European countries (with declines for most oral cavity cancers but increases for oral tongue cancers), suggesting etiologic differences. This study quantified etiologic heterogeneity across oral cavity cancers using data from the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study.
METHODS: Cox regression models were used to quantify associations (hazard ratios [HRs] and populati

BACKGROUND: The greater palatine groove (GPG), crest, and bridge show different forms; to avoid problems during dental implant and periodontal surgeries, it is important to know how they change their forms. It is the first time to be inspected in the Iraqi population.
METHODS: Two hundred patients (100 males and 100 females), ranging from 18 to 86 years old, had their CBCT scans retrospectively analysed. The first (M6) and second molar (M7) areas were examined for the presence and frequency of GPGs, crests, and bridges. Using Chi-square and t-tests with a significance level of 0.05, the data

Background: This study investigated the association between tongue strength, measured using the Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI), and upper airway collapse patterns observed during drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Methods: Thirty patients who underwent polysomnography, DISE, and tongue pressure measurement were retrospectively analyzed. Upper airway collapse was assessed using the VOTE classification. The tongue strength task performed using the IOPI requires participants to compress an air-filled bulb placed on the hard palat

Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) is a benign bone lesion of unknown etiology that primarily affects the jaws, particularly the mandible. Clinically, CGCG can present in various forms, from small lesions to large, painful lesions. Radiographically, it appears as a radiolucent area; on histopathologic analysis, lesions show multiple giant cells. This case report describes an extensive CGCG in the maxilla of an 11-year-old girl who initially experienced painless swelling on the anterior hard palate. Clinical and radiographic examinations initially raised concerns of a possible malignancy, but

Breastfeeding is universally recognised as the nutritional gold standard for the neonate, with well-established benefits on immunological, metabolic, and relational levels. However, in light of the evidence accumulated over recent years, limiting its value to the nutritional dimension alone is reductive. Breastfeeding also represents a powerful functional modulator of craniofacial growth and, consequently, an early potential determinant of orthodontic health. Suckling at the breast activates a complex neuromuscular pattern involving the tongue, lips, mandible, and perioral musculature in a coo

BACKGROUND: Oral manifestations occur in approximately 25% of patients with lupus erythematosus (LE), but detailed descriptions of site distribution and subtype morphology remain limited.
OBJECTIVES: To characterize the clinical patterns of oral involvement across lupus subtypes and assist clinicians in differentiating these from other oral mucosal conditions.
METHODS: The records of 42 patients with oral LE (OLE) seen by the oral medicine and dermatology services at Guy's Hospital, London, were reviewed. There were 23 patients with discoid LE (DLE), 17 with systemic LE (SLE) and 2 with suba

Oro-nasal fistulas may result from congenital defects, trauma, infections, neoplasms, or chronic cocaine use, affecting speech, swallowing, and quality of life. The tongue flap stands out for its rich vascularization and low donor-site morbidity. A 36-year-old female presented with nasal speech and liquid regurgitation through the nose. She had a history of chronic cocaine use for 7 years, discontinued 2 years prior. Clinical and radiographic examination revealed a 2.0 cm oro-nasal fistula in the hard palate. Reconstruction was performed under general anesthesia using an anteriorly based pedic

Ectopic eruption of a tooth into the nasal cavity is a rare odontogenic anomaly with unclear etiopathogenesis, potentially involving developmental, genetic, or environmental factors. We report the case of a 27-year-old woman presenting with unilateral nasal discomfort and foul-smelling discharge, caused by a supernumerary tooth in the left nasal cavity. Computed tomography confirmed the diagnosis and provided detailed information on tooth orientation, bony anchorage, and relationships with adjacent structures. Surgical extraction was performed via a transoral vestibular approach, chosen due to

Oral cavity cancers are a debilitating form of head and neck cancer with high rates of mortality. Radiotherapy is one of the main forms of treatment but relies on minimizing doses that are delivered to organs at risk and considering any motion in the mouth. One solution is to use a block within the mouth which acts to reduce motion and decreases tissue heterogeneity. In this work, we developed a process for designing a customized tissue-equivalent 3D-printed tongue bite and evaluated its impact on the radiation treatment. Six patients with stage III or IV oral cancer were involved. Computed to

Rodent models have provided a detailed body of knowledge on craniodental development. Yet, it is unknown how well altricial mammals such as mice parallel primate and specifically human craniodental development. To address this, here we document the ontogeny of jaw-related structures in a cross-sectional prenatal sample of mouse lemurs (Microcebus spp.). Mouse lemurs follow the same developmental sequence as humans and mice with respect to the earliest appearance of jaw structures. Meckel's cartilage forms before any membranous bone of the mandibular body; mandibular basal bone begins to ossify

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is a benign salivary gland tumor. It most commonly affects the major salivary glands, especially the parotid gland. PA is more common in women and usually manifests in the fourth and fifth decades of life. Clinically, it manifests as a well-defined, painless swelling with intact mucosa. Here, we report a rare case of pleomorphic adenoma in a 17-year-old Afghan male, located on the hard palate, which was completely enucleated without postoperative complications. At a three-month telephonic follow-up, no recurrence or adverse findings were reported.
