Assessment of Palatal Masticatory Mucosa Thickness in the Saudi Population of a Teaching Hospital in the Eastern Province: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional CBCT Study.

Background/Objectives: Periodontal and implant therapies frequently require soft tissue augmentation for optimal outcomes. As the hard palate serves as the primary donor site, this study evaluated palatal masticatory mucosa thickness variations in a Saudi population of the Eastern Province using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) at a teaching dental hospital, providing site-specific data for clinical applications. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional analysis of 215 CBCT scans from systemically healthy, non-smoking adults (>18 years) was conducted at the University Dental Hospital. Meas

Evaluation of a rare known anatomic formation: Parinaud's canal.

Parinaud's canal (PC) is a structure located on the processus frontalis ossis maxilla. During the growth period, the shape of the nasal septum and the presence of nasal septal deviation (NSD) may affect facial morphological parameters. The aim of this study is to investigate the presence of PC and the effect of the NSD on facial morphological parameters. Radiographic images of 200 patients were retrospectively reviewed. On the CBCT images PC, NSD and Palate-Orbita angle were evaluated. The significance level was set at p = 0.05. PC was found to be present at a high rate in the general populati

Identification of novel genetic, neurobiological and radio-anatomical biomarkers for risk stratification of sudden unexpected death in infancy and early childhood: the BIOMINRISK study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The BIOMINRISK project is a national French study aimed at identifying novel biomarkers associated with sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI) through a multidisciplinary approach encompassing three key components of intrinsic vulnerability to SUDI: genetic, neurobiological and radio-anatomical. A better understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying SUDI may enhance the personalisation of prevention strategies and contribute to reducing its incidence. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will analyse data from 250 children under the age of 2 included in the national SUDI

Surgical application of a customised temporary palate guard to treat bleeding palatine ulcers in three cats.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: Three adult cats were successfully treated for severe anaemia caused by a bleeding hard palate ulcer with a temporary palatal guard. Each cat required a blood transfusion and underwent surgical implantation of a customised temporary guard to protect the hard palate mucosa from ongoing irritation. The palatal guards were made from radiographic film in two cases and an acetate sheet in the third. Cats received varied concurrent treatments in conjunction with surgery, including amoxicillin/clavulanate or doxycycline, cyclosporine and prednisolone. Complete resolution of the h

Case report of long-term disease control of recurrent intraoral basal cell carcinoma with vismodegib at two-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Intraoral basal cell carcinoma (IOBCC) is an extremely rare cancer and is usually treated with surgical excision. However, the management of recurrent IOBCC not amenable to resection is unknown. We report a case of effective treatment of recurrent IOBCC with vismodegib with rapid and durable response following only 6 months of treatment. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 60-year-old female with IOBCC was first diagnosed in August 2016 involving right buccal mucosa and right anterior hard palate. She subsequently underwent wide local excision with involved margins. Her first local recurrence occ

Wnt5a gain- and loss-of-function present distinctly in craniofacial bone.

INTRODUCTION: Robinow syndrome has characteristic craniofacial and dental features and can be caused by gain- or loss-of-function variants in Wnt family member 5A (WNT5A) non-canonical signaling. The craniofacial and dental manifestation of Robinow syndrome is heterogenous, as is the effect of altered Wnt5a in animal models. The relationship between Wnt5a and craniofacial and dental phenotypes is not fully understood. METHODS: To investigate the role of Wnt5a in craniofacial and dental development, we utilized a Wnt5a conditional loss-of-function (LOF: Wnt5a fl/fl ;Ctsk cre ) and a Wnt5a cond

Proposal of Hard Palate-C2-Hyoid Bone Angle as a New Parameter Possibly Related to Dysphagia as a Postoperative Complication of Upper Cervical Fixation: A Case Series and Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Occipitocervical fusion (OCF) and upper cervical posterior fixation can be performed to resolve occipitocervical or upper cervical instability. The cervical vertebral realignment following these procedures can result in dysphagia, which can decline patients' postoperative status. Several radiological parameters on cervical lateral X-ray images were proposed to predict and avoid this postoperative dysphagia. However, previous parameters principally focus on cervical alignment and do not include the hyoid bone, which is an essential anatomical structure related to the swallowing me

Dentigerous Cyst Associated With Impacted Inverted Mesiodens: A Report of Three Cases and a Brief Literature Review.

Introduction: Dentigerous cysts are the second most prevalent type of odontogenic cyst, following radicular cysts, and are primarily associated with impacted teeth. These cysts are most commonly associated with impacted third molars and canines. Notably, approximately 5% of dentigerous cysts are found in conjunction with supernumerary teeth, predominantly mesiodens. Between 1964 and April 2025, only about 51 cases of dentigerous cysts related to impacted mesiodens have been reported in the literature. This article presents three additional cases, accompanied by a concise literature review. Cas

Caffeic acid phenethyl ester promotes palatal wound healing and enhances wound-associated macrophage CD68 expression.

OBJECTIVES: Palatal wounds may result in open lesions, which can lead to extended inflammation, discomfort, wound contraction, scar tissue development, interference with phonation or mastication, and disruption of maxillofacial growth. Flavonoids are known to possess the ability to diminish macrophage pro-inflammatory activity and to facilitate macrophage-mediated resolution of inflammation, thereby accelerating the healing process. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), the principal bioactive constituent of propolis, belongs to this family, and is known to diminish inflammatory cell count, acc

Evaluation of a caudal midline glossectomy on tongue volume and upper airway cross-sectional areas in brachycephalic dogs: a cadaveric study.

INTRODUCTION: Relative macroglossia may contribute to brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, the pathologic disorder associated with respiratory dysfunction commonly seen in brachycephalic dogs. Recent studies on brachycephalic dogs have demonstrated a relative macroglossia along with reduced air volume in the upper airway compared to non-brachycephalic dogs. Tongue reduction glossectomy may be a surgical option to address upper airway obstruction secondary to macroglossia. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of a caudal midline glossectomy (CMG) on tongue volume and u

A Rare Blue in the Pink: Benign Blue Nevus on the Gingiva in an Eight-Year-Old Child.

Oral melanocytic nevi are rare, benign tumors of unknown etiology that develop from melanocytes. The hard palate is where oral nevi most frequently occur, followed by the gingiva and buccal mucosa. Although asymptomatic, their clinical characteristics frequently necessitate a careful diagnosis of other pigmented diseases, including malignant melanoma. This report describes a rare instance of blue nevus in an eight-year-old female patient on the attached gingiva of the lower lip front region of the jaw. This case emphasizes how crucial it is to differentiate blue nevi from other melanocytic les

Assessment and Projections of the Burden of Lip and Oral Cancer among Indian Men.

INTRODUCTION: The oral cavity includes the lips, buccal mucosa, teeth, gingiva, anterior two third of the tongue, the floor of the mouth, and hard palate. Comprehensive data on the burden of oral cancer are lacking at the national and state levels. Therefore, analysing the changing trend in oral cancer in India over the last three decades fills a significant gap. METHODS: In this study, the number of new cancer cases, the population at risk, and the crude incidence rate were extracted from the GBD 2019 data. We used the Joinpoint regression to assess the trends in age-adjusted incidence rates

Adenomatoid hyperplasia of minor salivary glands: report of three cases with immunohistochemical findings and literature review.

Adenomatoid hyperplasia (AH) is an infrequent intraoral lesion, composed of lobular aggregates of hyperplastic normal-appearing salivary glands (SG). Three cases of adenomatoid hyperplasia of minor salivary glands (AHMSG) are reported: two were located on the hard palate, in a female patient aged 41 and in a male aged 85 years, and one in the lower lip, in a male patient aged 37. Histopathologically, lesions showed enlarged lobules of mucous or mixed acini with dilated salivary ducts and fibrous stroma. Immunohistochemically, acinar cells were positive for CAM 5.2 and cytokeratin 7 (CK7) and n

Impact of Palatoplasty on Middle-Ear Effusion in Children with Cleft Lip and Palate.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have primarily evaluated postoperative middle-ear outcomes following palatoplasty and ventilation tube insertion (VTI), with a focus on patient age and cleft severity. However, few have investigated the influence of cleft sidedness and variations in Furlow-based palatoplasty techniques. This study aimed to assess the presence of otitis media with effusion (OME) before and after palatoplasty, with or without VTI, and to identify factors associated with OME, including baseline patient characteristics, cleft sidedness, and surgical approach. METHODS: The authors retr

Preemptive, Self-Applied Photobiomodulation in the Treatment of Oral Mucositis: A High-Risk Case Study.

INTRODUCTION: Oral mucositis (OM) is a prevalent and debilitating complication of antineoplastic therapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Effective OM treatment has important economic, quality of life (QoL), and healthcare implications. Photobiomodulation (PBM) emerges as an innovative addition to the treatment paradigm, using red and near-infrared light to relieve pain and stimulate tissue repair without significant toxicity. Although the role of PBM is well established in international guidelines, optimal timing and delivery of therapy remain unclear. Several studies have reporte
