Submucous cleft palate (SMCP) is a rare form of cleft palate involving abnormal muscle development in the soft palate. Diagnosis is often delayed, with many cases identified after age 4. Symptoms like hypernasality and velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) may appear, though some remain asymptomatic. SMCP diagnosis typically relies on Calnan's triad: bifid uvula, hard palate notch, and zona pellucida. Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) is a rare X-linked immune disorder marked by thrombocytopenia, eczema, and infections. Early diagnosis is key to effective treatment. Due to the rarity of both SMCP an

A 12-year-old castrated male golden retriever was referred for evaluation of a palatal mass. Computed tomography identified a 2.7 × 2.0 × 1.5 cm soft tissue mass extending from the caudal aspect of the hard palate to the rostral soft palate. Bilateral caudal maxillectomy was declined by owners; thus, a marginal resection was performed. The resultant palatal defect was closed using porcine small intestinal submucosa. Histopathology was consistent with a poorly pigmented malignant melanoma. The dog recovered well with no incisional complications or difficulty eating. The dog was euthanased 22 mo

PURPOSE: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common malignancy of the oral cavity. Despite cN0 staging, elective neck dissection (END) is often performed to detect occult cervical lymph node metastases (cLNM). Maxillary SCC (MSCC) generally exhibits similar metastases rates to intraoral SCC in other locations. However, due to the rarity of T1 MSCC, the current guidelines of the German Society for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery do not provide a clear recommendation for neck dissection (ND) in these cases, as existing data are limited.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on al

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the palate is a rare malignant tumor arising from minor salivary glands, characterized by slow but infiltrative growth, frequent perineural invasion, and a high risk of late recurrence and metastasis. We report the case of a 42-year-old male who presented with a progressively enlarging hard-soft palate mass over 5 years, associated with dyspnea, dysphagia, and mild hemipalatal paresthesia. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large, well-circumscribed, heterogeneously enhancing mass with extension toward the oropharyngeal lumen and suspected perineural spread

BACKGROUND: Congenital vascular malformations in the oral and maxillofacial region present significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, particularly in pediatric patients. These lesions-most commonly low-flow venous malformations-can compromise oral function, aesthetics, and routine dental care due to their vascular nature and bleeding risk.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 3.5-year-old girl with a congenital vascular malformation involving the left cheek, upper lip, vestibule, hard palate, soft palate, and anterior maxilla. The lesion was present at birth and gradually enlarg

Myoepitheliomas are exceedingly rare neoplasms of the salivary glands. Minor salivary gland neoplasms most frequently occur in the palate (hard palate), followed by the lips, oral mucosa, and tongue/floor of the mouth. Additionally, less prevalent locations encompass the retromolar area, pharynx, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and larynx. The lack of distinctive cytologic features and bland morphology in both benign and malignant myoepitheliomas necessitates the use of histopathology and immunohistochemistry for accurate diagnosis. Hence, here, we report a series of three cases, including tw

A 54-year-old female patient was referred to the oral surgery department of a public university with a complaint of a dark spot on the palate that had been present for eight months. Clinical examination revealed a well-circumscribed, darkly pigmented macule measuring approximately 1.5 cm × 1 cm located in the posterior hard palate. The lesion's location and size raised suspicion of malignancy. An incisional biopsy was performed, and histopathological analysis showed the presence of spindle cells containing light brown pigmented granules compatible with melanin. The final diagnosis was of blue

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare neutrophilic dermatosis in infancy, often misdiagnosed due to overlap with infectious and inflammatory conditions. We review existing literature on neonatal and infantile PG and present a case of a previously healthy 6-month-old male with rapidly progressive ulcerative lesions involving the face, scalp, extremities, and hard palate. Histopathology revealed a dense dermal neutrophilic infiltrate, and an extensive workup was unremarkable. The patient responded rapidly and completely to systemic corticosteroid monotherapy. Published cases similarly highlight id

Myiasis is a human parasitic disease caused by fly larvae that is rarely found in the oral cavity. Poor oral hygiene among older males can lead to intraoral myiasis. This report describes a rare case of severe, atypical pain caused by maxillary periodontal myiasis in an elderly disabled patient. Maggots infested the hard palate near the anterior maxillary teeth. Despite a radiological examination showing no significant hard tissue alterations, numerous maggots were manually extracted from a hole in the anterior hard palate. Surgical tooth extraction and maggot removal were both performed under

Herpes zoster, caused by the reactivation of varicella-zoster virus, typically presents with a unilateral, dermatomal rash. This case report describes a presentation of oral herpes zoster in a 64-year-old female patient. The patient presented with painful mouth ulcers confined to the right half of the posterior two-thirds of the hard palate, not crossing the midline. The diagnosis was based on clinical presentation, and treatment included systemic oral acyclovir and pain management with paracetamol. The patient showed substantial improvement with complete healing of the ulcers. This case highl
