BACKGROUND: Congenital craniofacial conditions are a diverse group of rare and complex disorders, leading to significant functional and psychosocial challenges. Their rarity and variability hinder research and clinical standardisation, resulting in substantial practice variation across centres. International collaboration and high-quality evidence are therefore essential to improve and converge care for affected individuals. This article presents the discussion section of a doctoral thesis that addressed these challenges through multiple methodological approaches, the majority of which were co

OBJECTIVE: Maintaining the occipito-axial (O-C2) angle following occipitocervical fusion is crucial to prevent postoperative complications. Although automated O-C2 measurement has been reported, practical methods that provide rapid results for routine practice remain limited. This study aimed to develop a deep learning model using the YOLO (You Only Look Once) object detection algorithm to automatically identify anatomical landmarks and rapidly calculate the O-C2 angle.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted using cervical spine radiographs from 2 independent facilities. The internal

OBJECTIVES: To develop a reliable measurement method, establish reference ranges for maxillary and mandibular widths, and evaluate their correlations with upper airway dimensions in Chinese adults with normal occlusion.
STUDY DESIGN: CBCT data from 164 nonsmoking Chinese adults (BMI 18.5-23.9) with normal occlusion (defined by skeletal and dental Class I relationships) were analyzed. Maxillomandibular widths were measured using the Hard Palate Plane (HPP) Analysis, modified-Penn (m-Penn), and Yonsei CBCT methods. Measurement reliability and associations with upper airway dimensions were evalu

Robinow syndrome has characteristic craniofacial and dental features and can be caused by gain- or loss-of-function variants in Wnt family member 5A (WNT5A) non-canonical signaling. The craniofacial and dental manifestation of Robinow syndrome is heterogenous, as is the effect of altered Wnt5a in animal models. The relationship between Wnt5a and craniofacial and dental phenotypes is not fully understood. To investigate the role of Wnt5a in bone during craniofacial and dental development, we utilized a Wnt5a conditional loss-of-function (LOF: Wnt5afl/fl;Ctskcre ) and a Wnt5a conditional gain-of

Patients with orofacial clefts (OFCs) present with a complex bony and dental anatomy that often necessitates the use of cross-sectional imaging for orthodontic treatment and subsequent surgical cleft repair. Cinematic rendering (CR) is a recently developed photorealistic display technique that employs physically-based photorealistic volume rendering to create 3D images from DICOM data. The objective of this technical report was to develop and optimize previously established CR settings for midface and dental anatomy to align with the specific requirements of 3D visualization in OFCs. CR was ap

Small-to-moderate oral and oropharyngeal defects can be repaired using various techniques, including primary closure, skin grafts, intraoral flaps, and extraoral flaps. Intraoral options include the buccal fat pad, palatal flap, tongue flap, and buccinator myomucosal flap (BMMF). Each flap has advantages and limitations in its applicability, due to anatomical and functional factors. This retrospective study evaluated 121 patients who underwent oral and oropharyngeal reconstruction using the BMMF; 102 had malignant tumours, two had benign tumours, 14 had cleft lip and palate, and three had oron

INTRODUCTION: Compound nevi are less common. Compound nevi account for approximately 5.9%-16.5% of all reported oral melanocytic nevi. Current evidence suggests no clear association with patient age or sex. The oral compound nevus is most typically found on the hard palate and buccal mucosa, with fewer cases occurring elsewhere in the mouth. This case report aims to highlight the rare case of a compound nevus in the gingiva of the maxillary anterior region of a patient who presented for cosmetic enhancement.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old healthy female patient reported with a chief complai

Background/Objectives: Accurate quantification of alveolar cleft defects for bone grafting remains difficult due to inconsistent anatomical boundaries. This study established an expert consensus on boundary landmarks for alveolar bone graft (ABG) planning and validated the accuracy and reliability of digital volumetric measurement methods. Methods: Three cleft specialists performed repeated simulated graft procedures in seven patient-specific 3D-printed models, first according to the operator's clinical judgment, and subsequently according to panel-derived consensus boundaries. Two radiologist

Background/Objectives: This study evaluated 3D palatal shape variation to distinguish population affinities, aiming to enhance forensic and anthropological assessments of unknown human remains. Methods: Maxillary dental casts (n = 100 per group) from four population groups, Australian Europeans, Malaysian Malays, Malaysian Chinese and Malaysian Indians, were digitised using a 3D scanner. Fourteen gingival and two mid-palatal landmarks and 99 surface points (semi-landmarks) were placed to capture the overall palatal shape. Shape data were aligned using Generalised Procrustes Analysis (GPA) foll

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Over the past decade, the popularity of smokeless tobacco products, particularly heated tobacco products (HTPs), has increased among adolescents and young adults. This study aimed to determine the effects of HTPs and conventional cigarettes on oral health and quality of life (QoL).
METHODS: This stratified cross-sectional study included 90 participants divided into three groups: conventional cigarette smokers (N = 30), HTP users (N = 30), and non-smokers (N = 30). Sociodemographic data and oral-medical status [salivary pH, halitosis, sialometric measurements, Decayed, M

Tuberculous (TB) arthritis accounts for approximately 1-3% of TB cases and typically involves large joints, whereas oral TB is extremely rare. The coexistence of an oral ulcerated mass and monoarticular erosive arthritis is unusual and may mimic malignancy, often leading to delayed diagnosis. We report a 50-year-old previously healthy Chinese male patient, who presented with a six-month history of right wrist pain, palatal pain, intermittent fever, anorexia, and significant weight loss, followed by difficulty in chewing and swallowing. Examination revealed cachexia, an ulcerated mass on the ha

BACKGROUND: Facial tumor resections often require invasive surgical approaches such as the Weber-Fergusson incision, which, despite oncological effectiveness, is associated with significant aesthetic and functional drawbacks. Based on our observational experience in 2 cases, we introduce the "tau" incision as a potential modification designed to optimize exposure while reducing aesthetic compromise. These impressions remain preliminary and require further validation.
METHODS: This study introduces the tau incision, a modified approach designed to optimize exposure while minimizing aesthetic c

CASE SUMMARY: An 11-year-old domestic shorthair cat presented for evaluation of severe oral haemorrhage. The patient had documented flea infestation and a history of marked pruritus preceding the onset of bleeding. Clinical examination identified a solitary lesion on the rostral hard palate as the only apparent source of haemorrhage. Histopathological analysis of the lesion revealed features consistent with trauma-induced ulceration, including fibrino-suppurative inflammation and granulation tissue proliferation. Based on the lesion's location, clinical history and histopathological findings,

PURPOSE: Surface mould brachytherapy (SMB) in edentulous hard palate cancer patients remains a technical challenge due to issues in prosthetic retention and reproducibility. We present a novel technique for SMB in a completely edentulous patient with a second primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the hard palate, previously treated with external beam radiotherapy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 73-year-old edentulous male presented with a 1 cm × 1 cm superficial lesion in the hard palate on the right side, staged as cT1N0M0. Given his prior irradiation and surgical ineligibility, high-dose-rate (

Reconstruction of medium-sized palatal defects following maxillectomy represents a major challenge in maxillofacial surgery. The facial artery musculomucosal (FAMM) flap has become a reliable reconstructive option due to its valid vascular supply and mucosal similarity. Numerous technical variants, have expanded its clinical applicability. However, limitations related to flap rotation through dentition or prosthetic structures may compromise outcomes. This note describes a novel surgical technique employing a superiorly based, reverse-flow FAMM flap transposed through a lateral maxillary sinus

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a very rare malignant neoplasm of the salivary glands. It mainly affects the major salivary glands. Little is known about the specificity of EMC in minor salivary glands (MSGs), which represents a diagnostic challenge.
METHODS: A systematic review was performed to identify clinical cases and case series of EMC in MSGs. The search was restricted to EMC of the palate to better characterize the diagnosis and management of this entity.
RESULTS: Of 509 initially identified articles, only 21 were included, involving 25 patients. The

BACKGROUND: The greater palatine foramen (GPF) transmits the greater palatine vessels and nerve. Knowledge of its anatomical position is vital for maxillary anaesthesia in orofacial surgery, as well as for controlling bleeding during endoscopic sinus surgery, septorhinoplasty, posterior epistaxis, and palatal surgery.
AIM: This study was conducted to analyse the location of the GPF relative to various anatomical landmarks of the bony hard palate among adult dry skulls from West Bengal.
METHODOLOGY: A total of 104 dry skulls were examined. The vertical distance from the centre of the GPF to t

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is an uncommon mesenchymal neoplasm of intermediate biological potential with rare occurrence in the oral cavity. Its broad histopathologic spectrum, coupled with variable immunohistochemical expression, renders it a significant diagnostic challenge, particularly in elderly patients with oral risk habits where malignancy is the primary clinical concern. We report a case of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-negative IMT of the myxoid pattern arising simultaneously in the right hard palate and gingivobuccal sulcus in a 75-year-old female with a long-standi
