The unrecognized burden of patient-level social determinants of health on health outcomes following traumatic injury.

INTRODUCTION: Social determinants of health (SDOH) and their relationship to patient outcomes have become center-points in efforts to improve healthcare. Most studies rely on aggregated datasets and proxy measures, often using geographic location to assess SDOH, but this approach is prone to ecological fallacy. Using patient-level data, this study sought to analyze the correlation between SDOH and specific outcomes in trauma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patient demographics, social work interview data and trauma admission data were combined for the years 2019-2020 at a large urban academic level 1

The Effect of a Simple and Reproducible Marking Technique on Enhancing Radiation Safety in Surgical Fixation of Proximal Femur Fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Proximal femur fractures are among the most common orthopaedic injuries in the UK. Intraoperative fluoroscopy is essential for precise fracture fixation but exposes both patients and surgical teams to ionising radiation, increasing the risk of complications such as cataracts and certain cancers. While various guidelines aim to mitigate these risks, consistent implementation remains a challenge, and there is limited literature describing surgeon-led techniques to directly reduce intraoperative exposure. METHODS: A case-control study was carried out at a single district general ho

Constructing a predictive model for acute mastitis in lactating women based on machine learning.

Acute lactational mastitis is a frequently occurring complication for lactating women, exerting a certain degree of influence on their physical condition, breastfeeding, mental health, and daily life. The etiology of this disease is complex, and the early symptoms lack typicality. Delayed diagnosis often occurs, which further progresses to abscess or more severe infections, adversely affecting the therapeutic effect and eventually leading to a prolonged recovery process and triggering other complications. Nevertheless, currently, the research regarding the risk factors of acute mastitis that o

Evaluating the Role of Ultrasonographic Measurements in Assessing Macrosomia Among the Fetuses of High-Risk Antenatal Women in a Tertiary Care Hospital.

Background and objective Fetal macrosomia, defined as a birth weight >4.0 kg, is associated with serious maternal and neonatal complications such as prolonged labor, cesarean delivery, postpartum hemorrhage, birth trauma, and long-term metabolic risks. Maternal factors, particularly gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), excessive weight gain, and certain comorbidities, increase the risk of macrosomia. Early detection in high-risk pregnancies is crucial to guide clinical management and improve outcomes. Conventional sonographic estimated fetal weight (EFW) provides important information but may

Management Strategies of Fingertip Injuries: A Case Series.

Fingertip injuries are among the most frequently encountered hand traumas in clinical settings and often result from occupational, recreational, or domestic incidents. These injuries range from simple lacerations and avulsions to more complex presentations involving severe tissue loss, exposed bone, fractures, and nail bed disruptions. Given the intricate anatomy of the fingertip, comprising soft tissue, bone, nerves, and the nail unit, these injuries can significantly compromise hand function, sensation, dexterity, and aesthetic appearance. Prompt and appropriate management is crucial to mini

Tranq burn: Exploring the etiology of xylazine-related soft tissue injuries.

INTRODUCTION: 'Tranq dope' is a combination of xylazine and fentanyl that is increasingly common in the US. Frequently injected, its use appears related to severe skin and soft tissue wounds (SSTW) through an unknown mechanism. Previous research suggests that the high acidity of certain heroin source-forms contributes to vein damage and SSTW, however, the possibility of a role between the acidity of tranq dope and SSTW is understudied. METHODS: A convenience sample of persons who use drugs participated in semi-structured interviews (Philadelphia, Oct. 2023, n = 30). Observations of wounds/inj

Articular and extra-articular scapula fracture.

Scapular fracture is varied but rare, and studies have only low levels of evidence. Surgical indications are increasingly numerous, but non-operative treatment with early rehabilitation is the gold-standard in the majority of cases, showing good results. Surgery is indicated according to the patient's functional demand, on certain anatomic criteria evaluated on CT: glenopolar angle <20 °, >10 mm frontal displacement (medialization) and sagittal angulation >40 ° for fractures of the scapular neck and body, and >4 mm joint displacement, involvement of more than 30% of the joint surface and persi

Neurotoxic effects of scorpion envenomation, a video of nystagmus, dysmetria, and tongue fasciculations: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Scorpion stings are common in rural areas worldwide, with most cases being benign. However, certain species, such as Centruroides in Southwestern USA, can cause severe neurotoxic envenomations. Neurotoxic symptoms, including nystagmus and ataxia, are well documented in pediatric cases but remain rare in adults. We present a rare case of neurotoxic scorpion envenomation in an adult. CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old Hispanic female with a history of anaphylaxis to bee venom presented to the emergency department (ED) following a scorpion sting. Endocrine dysfunction post-traumatic brain injury: challenges and therapeutic approaches.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a widespread, serious public health concern with substantial lasting effects, such as impacting the endocrine system. Here, we review the complications and consequences of TBI on the hypothalamic-pituitary axis (HPA) and connected endocrine glands, which are essential for maintaining body balance. Endocrine dysfunctions caused by TBI, especially hypopituitarism, can result in hormonal imbalances that impact various physiological systems, such as growth, metabolism, reproduction, and stress responses. These dysfunctions can cause issues like adrenal insufficiency

Imaging Manifestations of Alcohol Use-associated Disorders and Diseases.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a serious condition linked to multiple health issues such as nervous system damage, heart disease, alcoholic liver disease, development of cancers, fetal alcohol syndrome, mental health disorders, and injuries to self and others. AUD presents a growing problem worldwide with significant economic and health care costs. Despite its growing prevalence, AUD remains underdiagnosed, partly due to the underreporting of alcohol intake and the stigma associated with the diagnosis. While traditionally diagnosed through clinical evaluation and patient history, diagnosis of A

Causal Relationship Between Hypertension And Vertigo: A Mendelian Randomization Study.

INTRODUCTION: Current genetic research on the relationship between hypertension and vertigo is limited, and traditional observational studies cannot establish a causal relationship due to design limitations, particularly regarding whether hypertension acts as a causal risk factor for specific vertigo subtypes, such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). METHODS: This study employed a two-sample MR approach to infer causal relationships via genome- wide association study (GWAS) data, thereby addressing the limitations of traditional observational studies. In addition to analyzing the

Genotypic variations and clinical implications of JEV-associated peripheral nerve injury: a commentary on multicenter findings from high-endemic regions.

We read with great interest the recent article by Wang et al. on peripheral nerve injury (PNI) associated with Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) infection in high-endemic regions of China. The study provides important insights into the significant relationship between JEV infection and PNI, particularly highlighting clinical manifestations such as acute flaccid paralysis and respiratory muscle paralysis. While we commend the authors' work, we suggest caution in interpreting the findings due to several limitations. First, genotype-specific differences, notably between GIb and GIII strains, may

In vitro characterization of potential botanicals to reduce infection and improve the rate of wound healing in humans and canines.

Wounds in both humans and canines are injuries that result in damage to the body's tissues. Wounds can range from minor superficial scratches to severe and deep injuries. Complications of wounds, both in humans and canines, can range from mild to severe. Proper wound care and timely treatment are essential to prevent complications and promote healing. One of the most common and concerning complications of wounds is infection. When the skin is broken, bacteria and other pathogens can enter the wound leading to an infection. In severe cases, infections can spread, causing systemic issues and eve

Organic electrolyte gated field effect transistor for detecting alpha synuclein longitudinally in Parkinsonism mouse model.

BACKGROUND: Enthesopathy is an evolving area for applied clinical research. MRI is the gold standard in the diagnosis of elbow joint pathology, but recent reports indicate that ultrasound imaging is more sensitive and accurate than MRI in detecting enthesopathy of the heels and knees. Too many patients are under-diagnosed and/or misdiagnosed because the early pathological changes of enthesitis in the different types of seronegative arthropathies are not detected. OBJECTIVES: This study was undertaken to describe the ultrasound features of elbow enthesitis in patients with seronegative arthrop

More Than a Bruise: Two Cases of Morel-Lavallée Lesions in Active Duty Soldiers.

Soft tissue injuries are common in the military, generally producing simple hematomas without the need for intensive evaluation and management. In certain situations, a shearing effect between fascial planes whereby a disruption of the vasculature and lymphatic systems creates a "closed degloving injury" is more generally referred to as a Morel-Lavallée Lesion (MLL). With a consistent pool of blood, lymph, and pieces of soft tissue, an M7LL can cause significant poor cosmesis, chronic pain, and risk secondary infection if left undetected and untreated. Proper diagnosis can be made through the
