We assessed mitochondrial replication, transcription, and function in the upper airways of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients and the effects of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty. BACKGROUND: It is uncertain which factors substantially influence outcomes after uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) in patients with supine predominant obstructive sleep apnea (POSA).
OBJECTIVE: To explore the predictors of UPPP outcomes in POSA patients.
METHODS: A total of 108 patient(52 positional patients (POSA) and 56 nonpositional patients(NPP)), who underwent the revised uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (H-UPPP), were retrospectively studied. Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) comprises cancers of the tonsils, tongue base, soft palate, and uvula. The staging of oropharyngeal cancers varies depending upon the presence or absence of human papillomavirus (HPV)-directed pathogenesis. The incidence of HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancer (HPV + OPSCC) is expected to continue to rise over the coming decades. PET/CT is a useful modality for the diagnosis, staging, and follow up of patients with oropharyngeal cancers undergoing treatment and surveillance.

Oral squamous papillomas (SPs) are benign masses commonly growing in the tongue, gingiva, uvula, lips, and palate. A case of an asymptomatic pedunculated squamous papilloma at the center of the soft palate is presented. Both surgical management and histopathologic analysis were conducted. The aim of this report is to stress the importance of early diagnosis and management of common benign oral lesions to prevent their transformation into malignancy.

BACKGROUND: The authors aimed to report a hitherto undescribed class of patients with the obvious phenotype of a novel soft palate dysplasia (SPD) combining unilateral soft palate hypoplasia with a fully developed uvula. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by repeated episodes of upper airway blockage and collapse during sleep accompanied by awakenings with or without oxygen desaturations. During obstructive sleep apnea events, the oropharynx in the back of the throat compresses, causing arousal, oxygen desaturation, or both, leading to fragmented sleep. The hyperplastic uvula is a common clinical finding in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. The various diagnostic and treatment modalities of obstructive sleep apnea are discussed in this article.

Uvulitis is the inflammation and swelling of the uvula, usually associated with infection of nearby structures. PURPOSE: This study aims to compare the efficacy of Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty + Tongue Base Radiofrequency (TB-RF) and Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty + modified thyrohyoid suspension techniques + TB-RF which aimed to suspend base of tongue muscles anteriorly toward thyroid cartilage.
METHODS: This randomized controlled trial study was conducted on 48 cases of confirmed OSA between Jan, 2019 and Aug, 2022. We divided patients into two groups. One group underwent Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty + modified thyrohyoid suspension + TB-RF technique, and another one underwent Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty + TB-RF.

The Southeast Asian genus Angustopila, currently comprising 13 nominal species, encompasses the world's tiniest land snails. This work shows that there are far more species than previously suspected, and that this genus is in fact, a very speciose group of tiny snails widely distributed in Southeast Asia. Angustopila is revised based on type material of known species as well as 211 samples newly collected in China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.
