Development of Soft Palatal Musculature Characterized by the Uvula Muscle of Miniature Pig.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical reconstruction is recommended for cleft palate patients. However, improper muscle reconstruction can cause scarring and velopharyngeal insufficiency. Understanding the developmental patterns of soft palatal musculature is crucial for improving treatments. Although mice are commonly used to investigate soft palate development, the uvula deficiency in mice limits their applicability. This study aimed to compare the developmental characteristics of soft palate muscles in miniature pigs and mice at various stages to better understand the patterns in large mammals. METHODS:

Squamous papilloma of the oral cavity and oropharynx in children.

OBJECTIVE: Squamous papillomas (SP) of the oral cavity and oropharynx are infrequently described yet commonly encountered in pediatric practice. This study characterizes our institutional experience, emphasizing the detection of high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) subtypes and implications for surveillance. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed using electronic health records from January 1, 2004, to January 1, 2024. The search utilized ICD-10 codes D10.1, D10.39, D10.4, and D10.41 for benign neoplasms of the oral cavity and oropharynx. Patients with papillomas of the larynx, t

Variability in Velar Morphology among Patients with Oral Submucous Fibrosis - A Cross-Sectional Survey in Odisha.

INTRODUCTION: Oral Submucous Fibrosis (OSMF) is slowly progressing chronic mucosal disease that can affect any part of the oral mucosa, even the pharynx. The soft palate and uvula also undergo significant fibrosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total number of 200 patients (study and control groups with 100 participants each), were evaluated clinically for OSMF. The velar morphology was studied using digital Lateral Cephalogram. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Data were evaluated in SPSS with Chi square test, the independent t-test and one way ANOVA. RESULTS: In the 100 cases and 100 controls, the age ran

Management of Congenital Palatal Fistula Associated With Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome.

Submucous cleft palate (SMCP) is a rare form of cleft palate involving abnormal muscle development in the soft palate. Diagnosis is often delayed, with many cases identified after age 4. Symptoms like hypernasality and velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) may appear, though some remain asymptomatic. SMCP diagnosis typically relies on Calnan's triad: bifid uvula, hard palate notch, and zona pellucida. Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) is a rare X-linked immune disorder marked by thrombocytopenia, eczema, and infections. Early diagnosis is key to effective treatment. Due to the rarity of both SMCP an

The posterior velar apex defined and its importance in the assessment of velopharyngeal dysfunction. An update of the surface anatomy of the hard and soft palate.

Soft palate (velar) elevation closes the posterior nasopharynx and prevents the escape of nasal passage air in speech or food during swallowing. However, when the velum is not symmetrical, incomplete closure may occur on one side, which is important in the assessment of speech hypernasality, principally after previously repaired cleft palate. This may present as a short anteroposterior length on one side of the uvula that leaves a gap in closure behind the velum. In the absence of an anatomical term, we have defined the posterior velar apex as the most anterior point on the free edge of the po

Soft Palate and Uvula Thermal Burn Injury in an Adolescent Following Recreational Inhalation of Nitrous Oxide.

Thermal injury refers to trauma to tissues as a result of exposure to a source of sufficiently high or low temperature. This mechanism of trauma may arise from direct contact with a heat source, e.g., scalding of skin secondary to immersion in hot water or following exposure to a stimulus below freezing temperature. Gases stored under pressure in a liquid state undergo adiabatic expansion upon decompression, which results in a rapid and significant decrease in temperature. Nitrous oxide is an example of a gas typically stored as a liquid in canisters prior to use. Tissue exposed to decompresse

Ocular Findings as the Most Striking Manifestation of a SMAD3 Variant.

Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS) is a heritable connective tissue disorder with variable expressivity. It is a multisystemic condition mainly characterized by a propensity for arterial aneurysms and dissections, skeletal manifestations, hypertelorism, bifid uvula, craniosynostosis, and cutaneous features. While LDS has significant clinical overlap with other heritable connective tissue disorders such as Marfan syndrome, the ocular manifestations of LDS have not yet been well characterized. We describe an individual with a variant in SMAD3 with a predominantly ocular phenotype and only mild arterial

Respiratory syncytial virus-induced uvulitis.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a respiratory virus that accounts for more than 100,000 ED visits per year. RSV causes the greatest morbidity in infants and children; however, older adults with chronic comorbidities have increased risk of hospitalization due to complications of RSV compared with those who do not have chronic conditions. Typical symptoms of RSV in older adults include cough, rhinorrhea, and sore throat; however, in more serious cases, wheezing, difficulty breathing, or shortness of breath may be present, potentially prompting ED visits. Infections due to other viruses, suc

Pooled prevalence and associated factors of traditional uvulectom among children in Africa: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Traditional childhood uvulectomy (TCU) is an unregulated cultural practice associated with significant health risks, including infections, anemia, aspiration, and oral or pharyngeal injuries. The reuse of unsafe tools such as blades, needles, or thread loops exacerbates the spread of infectious diseases like HIV and hepatitis B. Despite its clinical significance, the pooled prevalence and associated factors of TCU have not been adequately examined through systematic reviews or meta-analyses. OBJECTIVE: This review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence and assoc

Risk factors and treatment strategies for adjacent segment disease following spinal fusion (Review).

Anaphylaxis is a severe multisystem reaction that occurs rapidly after the introduction of an antigen that would otherwise be a harmless substance. It is characterized by airway and respiratory problems, cardiovascular collapse, mucosal inflammation, and other complications, all severe symptoms that can cause death. IgE-dependent anaphylaxis involves mast cells (MCs) which are the main sources of biologically active mediators that contribute to the pathological and lethal phenomena that can occur in anaphylaxis. Antibody-mediated anaphylaxis can follow multiple pathways such as that mediated b

Advancing neurological disease treatment: a computational approach for fibroblast growth factor detection.

CONTEXT: Informal caregiving within rural contexts in Canada is increasing. This is due in part to a number of factors related to the restructuring of the Canadian health care system, the regionalization of services to urban locations, the increased population of people 65 years and older, and the desire of this population to age within their rural homes. Most often, the informal caregiving role is assumed by rural women. Women tend to fall into the role of informal caregiver to elders because of the many societal and gender expectations and values that are present within the rural culture. Th

Reducing delayed detection of isolated cleft palate-related deformity: a call for routine intraoral examination of newborns.

OBJECTIVE: To provide healthcare professional-friendly practical recommendations for early detection of cleft palate-related deformities in newborns and offer an overview of managing these high-prevalent congenital abnormalities. SOURCE OF DATA: PubMed, SciELO, Lilacs, Cochrane, ScienceDirect, and Scopus databases were reviewed for cleft- and diagnosis-related studies. SUMMARY OF THE FINDINGS: Unfortunately, the global prevalence of delayed detection of cleft palate-related deformities remains unacceptably high, with over a quarter of cleft palates missed at birth. This delayed identificatio

Hair Tourniquet Syndrome Involving the Uvula Secondary to an Airway Foreign Body.

Hair tourniquet syndrome is a rare condition that can cause ischemia and necrosis secondary to hair fibers constricting a patient's appendages. Typically, the syndrome affects patients aged two to six months. Hair tourniquet syndrome often involves the toes, fingers, or genitalia, and it has been rarely reported to have oropharyngeal manifestations. Accurate and timely treatment of this syndrome is imperative to save the involved appendage. We discuss a case of a six-month-old female who presented to the emergency room (ER) with increased agitation and was found to have hair tourniquet syndrom

Isolated Laryngeal Angioedema in a Patient with Long-term ACE Inhibitor Use: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor-associated angioedema is the most common cause of angioedema seen in the emergency department (ED) and can be associated with a high morbidity. Most cases occur within months of initiation of an ACE inhibitor and are associated with facial and/or oropharyngeal swelling. We present a case of isolated laryngeal edema requiring intubation following 10 years of ACE inhibitor therapy. CASE REPORT: An 82-year-old female, who was on lisinopril therapy for 10 years, presented to the ED with shortness of breath and a sensation that her throat
