Leakage-aware pre-event machine learning evaluation for horse-race prediction under temporal validation.

Horse-racing prediction was used as a case study to develop and evaluate a leakage-aware machine-learning framework based on information available after race-entry finalization and before outcomes were known. Japanese Racing Association flat-race data obtained through JRA-VAN Data Lab. and exported using TARGET frontier JV were split temporally: 2015-2022 for training, 2023-2024 for validation, and January 5, 2025 to May 10, 2026 for independent testing. The test set contained 63,910 horse-level observations from 4,556 races. Confidence intervals were estimated using 10,000 race-level bootstra

Activation Chemistry-Driven Enhancement of Calotropis procera-Derived Fe3O4/Activated Carbon Nanocomposites for Efficient Treatment of Paint Industry Wastewater.

The wastewater generated from the paint industry consists of very complicated organic contaminants that result in higher biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). In order to solve such wastewater problems, there is a need to develop efficient techniques. This paper focuses on the preparation of Fe3O4/activated carbon (AC) nanocomposites via activation by H3PO4 and KOH and comparative analysis of efficiency in treating paint industry wastewater. For characterization purposes, the obtained nanocomposites were analyzed using UV-vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering,

Synergistic Electrostatic and Mechanical Anchoring at Cathode-Current Collector Junctions for Durable Sodium-Ion Batteries.

Maintaining reliable physical and electrical contact at the cathode-current collector junction remains a critical yet underexplored challenge in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). In particular, Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) cathodes undergo ∼8% volumetric fluctuations during biphasic (de)sodiation, progressively deteriorating the weak van der Waals-governed interface between the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binder and the aluminum substrate, causing electrical isolation and capacity loss. Despite the widespread industrial use of carbon-primed current collectors, a systematic understanding of their reinforcem

Multiscale insights into screw dislocation-driven growth mechanisms.

Spiral growth in two-dimensional (2D) materials has conventionally been explained by single screw dislocation mechanisms, yet a complete multiscale understanding remains elusive due to the intricate nature of screw dislocation structures. Here, we present a stabilization approach through metallic transition metal dichalcogenides (m-TMDs) overlayers on spiral semiconducting TMDs (s-TMDs), which enables unprecedentedly robust atomic-resolution imaging of screw dislocations in cross-sectional van der Waals heterostructures. Our multiscale investigations identify nanoscale substrate undulations as

Evidence for Magnon-Assisted Exciton Radiation in a Layered Antiferromagnetic Semiconductor.

Layered van der Waals (vdW) magnetic semiconductors open a new avenue for exploring intertwined excitonic and magnetic phenomena. Here, we investigate this interplay in the vdW antiferromagnet MnPS_{3}, uncovering an exceptionally long exciton lifetime (∼100  μs) below the Néel temperature (T_{N}). We demonstrate that the exciton lifetime is primarily governed by phonon-assisted nonradiative recombination and thus exhibits a strong temperature dependence. In contrast, the exciton radiative recombination shows a distinct temperature dependence that is sensitive to magnetic order. Below T_{N}, t

Dosimetry validation via EGS5 Monte Carlo simulation, microbial inactivation kinetics, and quality preservation of frozen sliced squid (Loligo spp.) under 10 MeV electron beam irradiation.

High-energy (10 MeV) electron beam (e-beam) irradiation was investigated as a non-thermal intervention for vacuum-packaged frozen sliced squid (Loligo spp.). Absorbed doses ranged from 1 to 5 kGy, with storage at -18 °C for eight weeks. A core challenge was dosimetry mapping within deep-frozen bulk geometries, since standard B3 thin-film dosimeters lose chemical validity below their glass transition temperature. This was addressed using the Electron Gamma Shower version 5 (EGS5) Monte Carlo code. A dual-beam configuration achieved a Dose Uniformity Ratio (DUR) of 1.18, confirmed via B3 dosimet

Unveiling the adsorption mechanism of diphenyl (2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl) phosphine oxide (TPO) on pristine graphene via density functional theory.

In this study, we investigated the adsorption mechanism of diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl) phosphine oxide (TPO) on pristine graphene using density functional theory (DFT). Four adsorption orientations were considered to identify the most stable configuration among those investigated. The results suggest that the interaction is governed by physisorption through a combination of π-π stacking, CH···π interactions, P=O···π contacts, and van der Waals forces. Charge density difference (CDD) and independent Gradient Model based on Hirshfeld partition (IGMH) analyses further confirm these noncovale

Interfacial capture of microplastics by a superhydrophobic COF-zeolite medium: Performance and multiscale mechanisms.

Urban stormwater runoff is an important pathway for microplastics entering aquatic environments, while conventional bioretention media have limited interfacial capture capacity for hydrophobic microplastics (MPs). To construct a medium with a superhydrophobic surface and enhanced MP capture ability, this study fabricated a superhydrophobic medium, HDA@COF-LZU1@PDA@Zeolite, through polydopamine anchoring, in situ growth of COF-LZU1, and hexadecylamine hydrophobic modification. Its structural composition, wetting stability, MP removal performance, and interfacial interaction mechanism were syste

Clinical equipoise as inclusion criterion to control for confounding in observational studies.

PURPOSE: This study investigates whether higher levels of expert disagreement, as a proxy for clinical equipoise, are associated with improved baseline comparability between treatment groups in patients with proximal humerus fractures. Additionally, it aimed to assess how progressively stricter inclusion criteria-based on this disagreement-affect the distribution of baseline characteristics between the treatment groups. METHODS: We used data from the LADON Humerus study, a multicentre, prospective cohort including patients treated operatively or non-operatively in five hospitals in the Nether

Generalizable principles for tailoring deep eutectic solvents in alkaloid extraction: Insights from multi scale computational profiling of Piper nigrum and Zanthoxylum bungeanum.

Conventional extraction of bioactive alkaloids relies on volatile organic solvents. This study evaluated 21 deep eutectic solvents (DESs) through experimental screening and multi scale computational profiling to extract piperine (PIP) from Piper nigrum and hydroxy sanshools (HAS and HBS) from Zanthoxylum bungeanum. For rigid PIP, a choline chloride/1,2-butanediol (1:4, 20% water) DES achieved 60.11 mg/g (a 1.53-fold increase over methanol). For flexible sanshools, a urea/acetic acid (1:2, 30% water) DES yielded 59.36 mg/g (HAS) and 14.61 mg/g (HBS). Molecular dynamics revealed that extraction

Pomological and Biochemical Properties of Rosehip (Rosa canina L.) Genotypes.

Rosehip (Rosa canina L.) is an important wild fruit species valued for its high nutritional and functional properties, particularly its richness in vitamin C, phenolic compounds, and antioxidant activity. Despite the widespread natural distribution of rosehip in Türkiye, many local genetic resources remain insufficiently characterized, limiting their effective utilization in breeding, conservation, and cultivation programs. The present study was conducted to evaluate the morphological, pomological, and biochemical characteristics of naturally growing rosehip genotypes in the Central District o

Underpinning hierarchical anisotropic structure formation in soy protein high-moisture extrudates by Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Plant-based meat alternatives are fibrous anisotropic food protein products that mimic the texture and palatability of animal-based foods. The main industrially scalable production technique for manufacturing such structured protein materials is high-moisture extrusion, which involves the thermo-mechanical processing, and subsequent cooling, of a hot protein melt in the presence of shear and temperature gradients. Yet, the complex mechanisms governing fibrous structure formation in plant-protein extrudates are poorly characterised, in turn limiting the rational design and optimisation of the e

A Rapid and Uniform Magnetization Method for Fe3O4 Nanoparticles Assisted by Rotating Magnetic Fields for Microrobots.

Micro/nanorobots have garnered significant attention due to their potential applications in biomedical fields such as minimally invasive surgery, targeted drug delivery, and cell manipulation. Magnetic field actuation, as a non-invasive and highly biocompatible driving method, has become a research hotspot. However, traditional magnetic functionalization methods like magnetron sputtering suffer from complex processes, high costs, and poor biocompatibility. Meanwhile, the mixture method combining magnetic particles with photoresist is constrained by particle dispersion and molding quality. To a

Room-Temperature Synthesis of Magnesium Incorporated Into OMS-2 Enables Highly Selective Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-Diformylfuran.

Selective oxidation of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) remains a challenge. Herein, we prepared magnesium intercalated into cryptomelane-type OMS-2 to achieve ultrafine Mg-OMS-2 nanorods via room-temperature coprecipitation. The results confirm that Mg2+ cations are incorporated into the MnO6 octahedral lattice of OMS-2. The Mg9%-OMS-2 with 9 wt% Mg exhibits high catalytic activity for aerobic oxidation of HMF with 91% conversion and 99.9% DFF selectivity at 120 °C within 1 h. Experimental results and characterization demonstrate that the reaction follo

Design, synthesis and preclinical evaluation of small-molecule FAP-targeted photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy.

Fibroblast activation protein (FAP)-expressing cancer-associated fibroblasts are an attractive target for spatially controlled photodynamic therapy (PDT) of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Here, we report the design, synthesis and preclinical evaluation of two FAP-targeted small molecules for application in PDT. Both compounds combine a FAP-binding motif based on FAPI-04, a DOTA chelator for indium-111 radiolabeling, and IRDye700DX as photosensitizer, but differ in the linker used for photosensitizer attachment. PhoFAP-01 was prepared via a DBCO-based SPAAC strategy, whereas PhoFAP-02

Response to the commentary on "trace cisplatin adsorption by thiol-functionalized sponge (TFS) and Sn/SnO₂-coated TFS: Adsorption study and mechanism investigation".

This response addresses the Commentary by Lima et al. on our study "Trace cisplatin adsorption by thiol-functionalized sponge (TFS) and Sn/SnO₂-coated TFS: Adsorption study and mechanism investigation". The discussion focuses on three main issues: the interpretation of the Dubinin-Radushkevich mean adsorption energy, the treatment of equilibrium constants in adsorption thermodynamics, and the use of three temperature points in the van't Hoff analysis. We clarify that the D-R parameter E was not used as a standalone proof of chemisorption, but as supporting evidence interpreted together with ad

Belgian validation of the INFLUENCE 3.0 model predicting 5-year locoregional and contralateral breast cancer recurrence.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) surveillance primarily aims to detect locoregional recurrence (LRR) and contralateral breast cancer (CBC), but current strategies are largely one-size-fits-all and not tailored to individual risks. The Dutch INFLUENCE 3.0 prediction model provides personalised 5-year LRR and CBC risks to support shared decision-making on surveillance. In this study, INFLUENCE 3.0 is externally validated in a Belgian population. METHODS: All female BC patients curatively treated between 2000 and 2018 at the University Hospitals of Leuven were included. Calibration was assessed us
