Impact of Extent of Coronary Artery Disease in Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: A PRO-TAVI Substudy.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery disease is present in one-half of patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). The recent randomized controlled PRO-TAVI (Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Before Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) trial indicated that deferral of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is safe in patients with concomitant coronary artery disease at 1-year follow-up. The SYNTAX (Synergy between Percutaneous Coronary Intervention with TAXUS and Cardiac Surgery) score quantifies the extent of coronary artery disease, which may guide individualized revascu

Measurement properties of pulmonary function measurement and patient-reported outcome measures in patients with multiple rib fracture without flail segment; validation study alongside the multicenter FixCon trial.

BACKGROUND: The reliability and validity of pulmonary function, pain and health related quality of life (HR-QoL) as outcome measures for patients with rib fractures, remain uncertain. Our objective was to evaluate measurement properties in patients with multiple rib fractures by comparing them with generic HR-QoL instruments (EuroQoL-5D-5L [EQ-5D-5L], Short Form-12 [SF-12]). METHODS: A multicenter RCT in adults (n = 180) was performed. Spirometry was performed at 30 days, 3, 6, and 12 months after trauma. Patients completed five questions on pain, EQ-5D-5L, SF-12, and two anchor questions on

PET/CT in benign bone disorders: An update.

Benign bone disorders encompass a diverse spectrum of nonmalignant conditions, with a varying pathophysiology and diagnostic workup. In recent years, PET/CT imaging has secured a prominent place in the analysis of benign bone disorders, functioning as a diagnostic discriminator and cross-disciplinary tool, rather than as a first-line test. In these patients, substitution of bone scintigraphy by [18F]NaF-PET/CT is steadily growing, reflecting renewed scientific interest in this tool. Other relevant radiopharmaceuticals comprise [18F]FDG and, to a lesser extent, [18F]choline. This review provide

A Library of Versatile Lignocellulose-Derived Monomers From 5-(Chloromethyl)furfural.

The valorization of biomass-derived platform chemicals into functional monomers is a promising strategy for developing more sustainable polymeric materials. Herein, we report a versatile synthetic approach for the preparation of a library of lignocellulosic (LC) monomers by coupling 5-(chloromethyl)furfural (CMF), once considered a waste product of furan production, with selected lignin-derived monomers. The reaction was optimized using vanillin, affording a bis aldehyde monomer (Fur-Van) in 93% yield after only 2 h under mild conditions using K2CO3 as the base. The methodology was successfull

Living the Masterclass: Multiple Sclerosis Patient Journeys and the Reality of Participatory Medicine.

This reflective article, written collaboratively by 4 people living with multiple sclerosis (MS)-Johanna Hising DiFabio, Meredith O'Brien, Jennifer Southard, and Danny van Leeuwen-with Mary Hennings of the Society for Participatory Medicine, distills insights shared at a March 2025 event cohosted with Northeastern University's Bouvé College of Health Sciences. The panelists speak as experts on their own lived experience, tracing the arc from diagnosis to what they call "optimal living" with a complex, unpredictable disease. The piece begins with the diagnostic journey itself, describing a "dou

A feasibility trial of a psychological intervention for addressing alcohol problems during pregnancy: a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: South Africa has the highest global prevalence of foetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Despite guidelines for FASD prevention, there are no community-based psychological interventions to reduce alcohol use during pregnancy. Through formative research, a culturally adapted intervention, the Mommy and Baby Wellness Programme, was developed to address the needs of pregnant women in the setting. The aim of the feasibility trial is to refine the trial methods before conducting a full-scale trial, and explore the feasibility of programme delivery, the acceptability of session conten

Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy for primary palmar hyperhidrosis: ten-year clinical outcomes and a phenomenology-informed interpretation of body experience.

Primary focal hyperhidrosis (PFH) is a chronic condition of excessive sweating disproportionate to thermoregulatory need, with substantial social and occupational burden. We evaluated outcomes of endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS)-symptom severity, quality of life, satisfaction, compensatory hyperhidrosis (CH), and recurrence-and interpreted dissatisfaction among patients who developed CH through a phenomenological lens. This retrospective single-centre cohort study included 72 patients who underwent ETS for PFH between January 2013 and December 2021, assessed preoperatively and at years

Caring for Preterm Infants on Home Oxygen: A Descriptive Qualitative Study of Caregivers' Experiences in Belgium.

BACKGROUND: In the Flemish part of Belgium, preterm births and NICU admissions for acute lung diseases have increased. Nearly half of extremely preterm infants develop bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), requiring prolonged oxygen therapy. Oxygen dependency often delays hospital discharge, leading to more infants going home with oxygen. Caregivers, especially mothers, face significant stress and emotional challenges during this transition, worsened by social isolation due to infection fears. PURPOSE: To gain a clearer understanding of caregivers' experiences caring for oxygen-dependent infants

Record Index-Bandgap Trade-Off: CdPS3 as a High-Index van der Waals Platform for Ultraviolet-Visible Nanophotonics.

The development of nanophotonics is hindered by a fundamental trade-off between a material's refractive index (n) and its electronic bandgap (E g ), which severely restricts the choice of materials for short-wavelength applications. This challenge is particularly acute in the visible and ultraviolet (UV) spectra, where high-performance devices require materials that are simultaneously highly refractive and transparent. Here, we report on the van der Waals (vdW) crystal cadmium phosphorus trisulfide (CdPS3) as a solution to this long-standing problem. Through comprehensive optical and structura

Exploration of tumor genomics associated with prolonged benefit from or resistance to talazoparib monotherapy in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibition is synthetically lethal in cells with deleterious alterations in DNA damage response genes involved in homologous recombination repair (HRR). Alterations in HRR genes, including BRCA1/2, have been identified in ~25% of prostate cancer samples and linked with worse clinical outcomes. We explored relationships between tumor genetics and prolonged benefit with talazoparib in TALAPRO-1. METHODS: The phase II TALAPRO-1 trial evaluated talazoparib monotherapy in pretreated patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer with HR

Examining the association between autistic traits and psychopathology in the general population: are there sex differences?

INTRODUCTION: Autistic traits (ATs) are linked to increased vulnerability to psychopathology. While sex differences are studied in clinical autism, little is known about these associations in the general population. This study examines sex-specific associations between ATs and psychopathology in a community sample of adolescents and young adults. METHODS: Data from 788 participants (475 females), aged 15-35 years (mean = 17.48 ± 3.60) in the TwinssCan cohort were used. ATs were assessed using Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ), while psychopathology and psychosis expression were measured with the

ADHD symptoms and learning difficulties: co-occurrence and directionality from Grades 1 to 9.

BACKGROUND: Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at increased risk of learning difficulties. This association may reflect shared risk factors, ADHD symptoms hindering learning, or learning difficulties increasing ADHD symptoms. We aimed to map rates of co-occurrence among ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and reading comprehension difficulties and to investigate directional influences between ADHD symptoms and reading fluency, arithmetic, and reading comprehension. METHODS: Reading fluency, arithmetic, and reading comprehension were assessed longitudinally in approxima

Comparison of HACOR score and ROX index for predicting noninvasive ventilation failure in acute hypoxemic respiratory failure: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Acute hypoxemic respiratory failure (AHRF) is commonly managed with noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in the emergency department (ED), but delayed identification of NIV failure worsens outcomes. We compared the HACOR (Heart rate, Acidosis, Consciousness, Oxygenation, and Respiratory rate) score and the ROX (Respiratory rate-OXygenation) index for predicting NIV failure in ED patients with AHRF. METHODS: This prospective observational study enrolled adult patients with AHRF receiving NIV in the ED between December 2024 and December 2025. HACOR and ROX were calculated at baseline and 1

Long-Range Polariton Canalization in a Graphene-Nanoribbon-Covered MgTeMoO6 Metasurface.

van der Waals (vdW) quaternary oxide structures, such as MgTeMoO6 slabs and nanoribbons, have recently emerged as promising platforms for demonstrating polariton propagation with hyperbolic dispersion and canalization. This expands the catalog of exceptional optical and electronic vdW materials. By leveraging topological transitions, various vdW heterostructures can induce extraordinary in-plane canalized polaritons. Yet, achieving long-range canalized polariton propagation has remained a significant challenge. In this study, we introduce a novel approach by covering the ridge tops of an MgTeM

Beyond stacking: Recognition, egress, and dynamical relay of phen-DC3 at a quadruplex-duplex junction.

G-quadruplex-duplex (Q-D) junctions are structurally complex nucleic-acid architectures with emerging relevance as selective ligand-binding targets, yet the dynamic basis of ligand recognition and dissociation at these hybrid interfaces remains insufficiently characterized. Here we have conducted microsecond level equilibrium molecular dynamics replicas per state, together with multiple well-tempered metadynamics simulations, to characterize the structural and energetic features of Phen-DC3 recognition at a Q-D junction. Ligand binding was observed to be associated with a reorganized bound-sta
