Temporal and weather-specific analysis of injury severity in three-wheeled rickshaw crashes: a heterogeneity-aware modeling approach.

Three-wheeled motorized rickshaws (3-WMRs) present serious safety risks in developing countries, yet the joint effects of weather and temporal changes on crash severity remain underexplored. Using six years of police-reported 3-WMR crash data from Rawalpindi, Pakistan (2017-2022), we estimate a partially constrained temporal random-parameters logit model with heterogeneity in means to capture unobserved factors and time-varying effects across weather types and biennial periods. Severe or fatal injuries are more likely in crashes involving motorcycles, pedestrians, or trucks; single-vehicle eve

A multicenter analysis of a two-tier triage system for serious injuries, morbidity, and mortality in pediatric patients following blunt trauma.

BACKGROUND: Trauma center activation criteria aim to triage patients and ensure appropriate activation level and allocation of resources. We hypothesized that a triage system based on prehospital physiologic variables could predict children at risk for injuries requiring acute interventions and a mechanistic rule would capture any remaining injured patients and those requiring prolonged intensive care unit (ICU) admission or need for urgent surgery. METHODS: Data sets from two multicenter prospective studies of pediatric blunt trauma were analyzed. A physiologic rule was developed using preho

Analysis of injury severity in low-speed electric vehicle crashes: Insights from partially temporally constrained modeling and out-of-sample prediction.

OBJECTIVE: Low-speed electric vehicles (LSEVs), as an important component of global micromobility systems, are increasingly prevalent in mixed traffic environments in developing countries. However, existing studies have paid limited attention to crash causation heterogeneity and temporal instability under open-road conditions. This study aims to investigate the temporal instability and unobserved heterogeneity of crashes involving three-wheeled and four-wheeled low-speed electric vehicles in China. METHODS: Crash data from Shandong Province, China, covering the period from 2021 to 2023, were

Intersection safety opportunities for the United States from international applications: A scoping review and practitioner roadmap.

INTRODUCTION: Intersections account for approximately one-quarter of U.S. traffic fatalities and one-half of all traffic injuries annually, with pedestrians bearing a disproportionate burden. In 2023, 7,314 pedestrians were killed and an estimated 68,244 were injured in U.S. traffic crashes. Despite a modest year-over-year decline in preliminary 2024 data (projected 7,148 pedestrian deaths; 39,345 total fatalities), the U.S. injury burden remains substantially elevated relative to peer nations. Concurrently, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) adopted the 11th Edition of the Manual on Un

Assessing heterogeneity in factors influencing three-wheeled motorized rickshaws crash outcomes between weekdays and weekends.

Traffic crashes involving three-wheeled motorized rickshaws (3-WMRs) pose considerable public health risk in developing countries. Although prior research has thoroughly investigated the effects of risk factors such as weather, road conditions, and driver characteristics on 3-WMR collisions, the effect of the day of the week (weekday versus weekend) has been relatively underexplored. The study uniquely identifies the temporal heterogeneity in 3-WMR injury severity risk factors between weekday and weekend crashes. By integrating psychological and sociological theories, it also aims to understan

Factors influencing injury severity in three-wheeled motorized rickshaw and motorcycle collisions.

Crashes involving three-wheeler motorized rickshaws (3-WMR) and motorcycles are becoming a rising public health and socioeconomic problem in developing countries. While earlier studies have investigated safety-related issues for two, and four-wheelers, there exists a notable research gap to understanding the factors that contribute to the severity of injuries in involving 3-WMR collisions with motorcyclists. The current study aims to fill this gap by investigating the risk factors contributing to injury severity in such crashes, employing a random parameters multinomial logit model with hetero

Occupational hazard to on-road air pollution within passenger transport micro-environments: evidence from traffic congested areas in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Traffic-related on-road air pollution is a major contributor to outdoor air pollution globally, particularly in developing countries most often due to outdated vehicle technology, and weaker emission control regulations. Drivers providing passenger transport services are constantly at higher risk. This study investigated the exposure to air pollutants of transport microenvironments (TME) of such vehicles most popular in heavy-traffic congested areas in the district of Colombo, Sri Lanka. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the TME of three vehicular types: three-whee

Motorized Two-Wheeled Vehicles Contribute Disproportionately to the Increase in Pandemic-Period Road Traffic Fatalities in New York State.

Background: New York State, like many other states, experienced a significant increase in road traffic deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic that is not fully understood. Our earlier work using the Safe System framework suggests a shift in the distribution of vehicle types that may have contributed to this phenomenon. Methods: To further investigate this, variables from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) were mapped onto the Safe System framework and used to examine factors associated with motorized two- and three-wheeled vehicle deaths. Two time periods were examined: pre-pandemic (1

The Alarming Surge of Driving Under the Influence-Related Motor Vehicle Crashes.

INTRODUCTION: The use of alcohol and illicit substances is increasing in the United States. However, it is not clear what proportion of motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) are related to driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or drugs. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and trends of positive drug and alcohol tests among drivers of MVCs admitted to trauma centers across the United States over the years. METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of the American College of Surgeons-Trauma Quality Improvement Program database over 4 years (2017-2020). Using International Classific

Reversing accidents involving pedestrians: an epidemiological investigation and cluster analysis using a novel database derived from Swedish National Register data.

OBJECTIVES: In contemporary urban environments, the intersection between Vulnerable Road Users, specifically unprotected pedestrians, and motor vehicles poses a persistent challenge to road safety. Reversing accidents, characterized by vehicles moving backward, often result in severe consequences for pedestrians due to limited visibility and inherent blind spots for the driver. This paper aims to provide a thorough examination of reversing accidents involving pedestrians in Sweden between 2000-2021; shedding light on the magnitude of the problem, contributing factors, consequences, and potenti

Naturalistic driving study on the impact of an aftermarket blind spot monitoring system on the driver's behaviour of heavy goods vehicles and buses on reducing conflicts with pedestrians and cyclists.

The risk being severely or fatally injured in crashes with heavy goods vehicle and buses is much higher compared to other vehicles. Especially vulnerable road users such as pedestrian and cyclists are at high risk. In the European Union 4600 pedestrian and more than 2000 cyclists were killed in 2019. 18% of the fatalities were counted in crashes with heavy goods vehicles or buses. Blind spot situations and driver inattention or distraction are causing and contributing crash factors. Driver assistance systems are intended to support drivers and might have a positive effect on the crash avoidanc

Real-world tailpipe emissions from autorickshaws (3-wheelers) under heterogeneous traffic conditions.

The current study aimed to measure real-world emissions of three-wheeled autorickshaws powered by CNG and parameters (such as speed, acceleration, air-fuel (A/F) ratio, and rpm) influencing 3-wheeler emission rates. Test vehicles manufactured under Bharat Standards BS-III and BS-IV were monitored for exhaust emissions in Delhi city using a portable exhaust emission measurement system (AVL Ditest Gas 1000). The average emission rates of CO, HC, and NO gases for on-road autorickshaws were found to be 0.015 ± 0.017, 0.003 ± 0.0017, and 0.007 ± 0.005 g/s, respectively. Further, the highest emissio

A comparative study of machine learning classifiers for injury severity prediction of crashes involving three-wheeled motorized rickshaw.

Motorcycles and motorcyclists have a variety of attributes that have been found to be a potential contributor to the high liability of vulnerable road users (VRUs). Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) that include pedestrians, bicyclists, cycle-rickshaw occupants, and motorcyclists constitute by far the highest share of road traffic accidents in developing countries. Motorized three-wheeled Rickshaws (3W-MR) is a popular public transport mode in almost all Pakistani cities and is used primarily for short trips to carry passengers and small-scale goods movement. Despite being an important mode of publ
