In-depth analysis of pedestrian crashes in Riyadh.

OBJECTIVE: Problems facing authorities and researchers of road traffic accidents in most developing countries include lack of data and clarity and accessibility problems with existing data. This resulted in a severe scarcity in information on pedestrian crashes, which, in turn, served as an obstacle facing all efforts to reduce these crashes. This study aims at studying pedestrian crashes with regard to their causes and characteristics in Riyadh, analyzing the bodily distribution of injuries in victims and determining the characteristics of pedestrians and drivers involved in these collisions.

Blunt cardiac trauma: lessons learned from the medical examiner.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to analyze autopsy findings after blunt traumatic deaths to identify the incidence of cardiac injuries and describe the patterns of associated injuries. METHODS: All autopsies performed by the Los Angeles County Forensic Medicine Division for blunt traumatic deaths in 2005 were retrospectively reviewed. Only cases that underwent a full autopsy including internal examination were included in the analysis. The study population was divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of a cardiac injury and compared for differences in baseline c

Lethal pedestrian--passenger car collisions in Berlin. Changed injury patterns in two different time intervals.

To expand the passive safety of automobiles protecting traffic participants technological innovations were done in the last decades. Objective of our retrospective analysis was to examine if these technical modifications led to a clearly changed pattern of injuries of pedestrians whose death was caused by the accidents. Another reduction concerns the exclusion of injured car passengers--only pedestrians walking or standing at the moment of collision were included. We selected time intervals 1975-1985 and 1991-2004 (=years of construction of the involved passenger cars). The cars were classifie

All-terrain vehicle fatalities--West Virginia, 1999-2006.

An all-terrain vehicle (ATV) is a motorized vehicle designed for off-road use with low-pressure tires, a seat that is straddled by the operator, and handlebars for steering. Currently, only four-wheeled models are produced in the United States; production of three-wheeled ATVs ended in 1987 because of safety concerns. During the 1990s, West Virginia led the United States in per capita deaths from ATV crashes, with rates approximately eight times higher than the national average. In an attempt to curtail this trend, West Virginia enacted legislation in 2004 to regulate ATV use. This law prohibi

Comparison of Poisson and Bernoulli spatial cluster analyses of pediatric injuries in a fire district.

BACKGROUND: With limited resources available, injury prevention efforts need to be targeted both geographically and to specific populations. As part of a pediatric injury prevention project, data was obtained on all pediatric medical and injury incidents in a fire district to evaluate geographical clustering of pediatric injuries. This will be the first step in attempting to prevent these injuries with specific interventions depending on locations and mechanisms. RESULTS: There were a total of 4803 incidents involving patients less than 15 years of age that the fire district responded to duri

Chyloperitoneum after blunt abdominal injury.

The objective of this study was to evaluate incidence of chylous injury in blunt trauma using a retrospective chart review. We present two patients who sustained chyle duct injury after blunt trauma. The first patient is a pedestrian struck by car. Abdominal CT scan revealed duodenal thickening and a moderate amount of paraduodenal fluid, which prompted surgical exploration. At laparotomy, the patient was found to have a disruption of his lymphatics at the level of the inferior vena cava (IVC) without duodenal injury treated with hemoclips, fibrin sealant and elemental gastrojejunal feeds. Patterns of road traffic injuries in a vulnerable population in Hyderabad, India.

OBJECTIVE: To describe patterns of road traffic injuries (RTI) in a vulnerable population-pedestrians and users of motorized two-wheeled vehicles (MTVs)-in Hyderabad, India. METHODS: 4019 pedestrians and 4183 MTV drivers provided information on the most recent road traffic crash (RTC) irrespective of the level of injury in the last one year for 17 454 and 17 242 household members, respectively. Crashes in which any household member was involved as a pedestrian or MTV user were analysed. RESULTS: Involvement in an RTC as a pedestrian or MTV user was reported for 1513 (4.4%, 95% CI 4.2 to 4.6%

Interventions for increasing pedestrian and cyclist visibility for the prevention of death and injuries.

BACKGROUND: Pedestrians and cyclists account for nearly one in three of all road users killed and seriously injured in road traffic crashes. Late detection of other road users is one of the basic driver failures responsible for collisions. Aids to improve pedestrians and cyclist visibility have been used to avert potential collisions. However, the impact of these strategies on drivers' responses, and on pedestrian and cyclist safety is not known. OBJECTIVES: 1. To quantify the effect of visibility aids versus no visibility aids, and of different visibility aids on the occurrence of pedestrian

Safety education of pedestrians for injury prevention.

BACKGROUND: Each year about one million people die and about 10 million are seriously injured on the world's roads. Educational measures to teach pedestrians how to cope with the traffic environment are considered to be an essential component of any prevention strategy, and pedestrian education has been recommended in many countries. However, as resources available for road safety are limited, a key question concerns the relative effectiveness of different prevention strategies. OBJECTIVES: To quantify the effectiveness of pedestrian safety education programmes in preventing pedestrian-motor

[Reconstrudive significance of stretch mark tears of the skin].

Stretchmark-like tears of the inguinal region are commonly referred to as typical lesions in pedestrian accidents when the victim is run over by a motorcar. These lesions can also be observed when a pedestrian is hit by a vehicle while being in an upright position. Stretchmark-like tears are due to hyperextension or excessive abduction of the hip joint. Characteristic morphological features are variable numbers of equally superficial and parallel tears of the skin following the skin's cleavage lines. Drivers of two-wheeled vehicles may exhibit inguinal stretchmark-like tears when they hit an o

The epidemiology of thoracic aortic injuries in pedestrians.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic rupture of the thoracic aorta is recognized as a common cause of occupant death after rapid deceleration in motor vehicle collisions. The incidence of thoracic aorta rupture in pedestrian victims of vehicular collisions, however, is unknown. This study focuses on the epidemiology of injury to the thoracic aorta in pedestrian vehicular collisions. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of all pedestrian fatalities and survivors of rupture of the thoracic aorta during a 6-year period at a regional Level I trauma center and medical examiner's office. RESULTS: There

Impact modelling studies for a three-wheeled scooter taxi.

Three-wheeled scooter taxis (TSTs) are being used in many Asian countries and along with buses are the main mode of public transport for the urban middle class population. The TST chassis is made by the manufacturer and the body is fabricated by local body-makers. The vehicle is not subject to any crash safety specifications. This work is the first attempt to study the crash characteristics of TSTs using a crash simulation computer software (MADYMO) with the objective of developing practical guidelines to make the vehicle safer in collisions with other motorized road users and pedestrians. Gender patterns in minor head and neck injuries: an analysis of casualty register data.

This study was designed to determine the age- and gender-specific incidences of moderate and minor head and neck injuries from emergency room casualty registers in two cities in northern Sweden. By contrast with findings in most studies on injuries, the incidence of minor and moderate head and neck injuries was higher among women than men in the 15-17- and the 39-53-year-old age group, and the incidence of neck injuries as high among women as among men in the 15-65-year-old age group. As compared to men, women more often sustained their head and neck injuries as pedestrians and as car passenge

Head injuries and bicycle helmet laws.

The first year of the mandatory bicycle helmet laws in Australia saw increased helmet wearing from 31% to 75% of cyclists in Victoria and from 31% of children and 26% of adults in New South Wales (NSW) to 76% and 85%. However, the two major surveys using matched before and after samples in Melbourne (Finch et al. 1993; Report No. 45, Monash Univ. Accident Research Centre) and throughout NSW (Smith and Milthorpe 1993; Roads and Traffic Authority) observed reductions in numbers of child cyclists 15 and 2.2 times greater than the increase in numbers of children wearing helmets. This suggests the

Elderly in the traffic environment: analysis of fatal crashes in northern Sweden.

Fatal crashes of the elderly (> or = 60 years; N = 379) in northern Sweden in the traffic environment, between 1977 and 1986, were investigated using autopsy and police reports. Males had double the death rate of females. The car occupants made up the largest category (43%) followed by pedestrians, pedalcyclists, and two-wheel-motorvehicle (TWMV) riders, but the risk of fatal injury per unit distance travelled was highest for pedestrians and pedalcyclists. Most car occupants were killed in vehicle-vehicle crashes, mostly in the daylight and at intersections or straight roads. Ice and/or snow (
