Extranodal MALT Lymphoma in the Oral Cavity: A Series of Three Cases with Review of Literature.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of MALT lymphoma in the oral cavity is challenging. There is a great overlap in the histopathologic, immuno-histochemical and molecular features of MALT lymphoma with reactive lymphoid proliferations. The literature shows a very few case reports of primary MALT lymphoma of oral cavity. METHODS: We discuss the histopathologic, immuno-histochemical, cytogenetic features, treatment and behavior of 3 cases of primary MALT lymphoma oral cavity along with review of literature. RESULTS: The age ranged from 40 to 57 years (male to female ratio = 2:1). The sites involved were ha

Craniofacial microsomia: Reflections on diagnosis and severity assessment based on a series of cases.

This study aims to discuss diagnostic criteria and severity assessment for craniofacial microsomia (CFM). A series of 61 patients with diverse CFM phenotypes had their clinical data collected by experienced dysmorphologists using a single protocol. Genetic abnormalities were searched through karyotype and chromosomal microarray analysis. Sex ratio, prenatal risk factors, and recurrence rate corroborated the literature. Despite the wide variability of clinical findings, ear disruption was universal. Eight patients were assigned as syndromic, four of whom had demonstrable genetic alterations. Th

Imaging of pediatric nasal masses: A review.

Several conditions may present as nasal masses in pediatric age, including congenital and developmental disorders, inflammatory and infectious conditions, neoplastic and neoplastic-like lesions, and other miscellaneous disorders. A confident presurgical diagnosis can be challenging and imaging is often key in the management of these lesions. We provide a pictorial review of pediatric nasal masses and discuss a location-based approach to the diagnosis of these lesions on imaging studies. Acquaintance with the most common pathologies and awareness for its characteristic imaging features can aid

Spindle Cell Lipoma Occurring in the Submandibular Space: Fifth Case Reported along with a Concise Review of the Literature.

Spindle cell lipoma (SCL) is an uncommon histological variant of lipoma that accounts for 1.5% of all adipose tumors. It rarely occurs in the oral cavity. The most common sites of involvement are the buccal mucosa, tongue, lip, alveolar mucosa, gingiva, and palate. Submandibular space is a very rare site of occurrence for SCL. When occurs in this site, SCL mainly involves the 4th-7th decade with a female predominance. Due to wide communications of submandibular space, the actual extent and appearance of the lesions present here gets masked up especially those involving the deeper tissues leadi

Application of supercritical fluid carbon dioxide in improving food shelf-life and safety by inactivating spores: a review.

INTRODUCTION: Sarcomas of the head and neck region account for less than 10% of soft tissue sarcomas, and comprise less than 1% of head and neck malignancies. Approximately 80% of sarcomas arise from soft tissue, with the remaining originating from bone or cartilage. Head and neck sarcomas typically occur more frequently in men. CASE REPORT: Our patient was a 30 year old male who presented with a ulceroproliferative mass over the soft palate increasing in size over past 6 months. Punch biopsy of the lesion was suggestive of carcinosarcoma. MRI PNS was suggestive of 38 × 39 × 33 mm sized lobul

The challenging diagnosis of overlapping oral primary/secondary syphilis with nonreactive serology.

The prevalence of oral syphilis, known as "the great imitator" because of its diagnostic complexity and varied clinical manifestations, is increasing worldwide, particularly in people living with HIV (PLWH), who could present false-negative serological results. Although some studies have described the variable presentation of oral syphilis in the context of HIV infection, the difficulty in distinguishing between the primary and secondary stages, clinically and histopathologically, underscores the need to describe atypical cases. We report the case of a 28-year-old HIV-positive man presenting w

Spectrum of cytomorphological features of extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type.

OBJECTIVE: Extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type (ENKTL) is an aggressive extranodal lymphoma of NK-cell or T-cell lineage. Its clinical features overlap with those of several sinonasal mass lesions. While the histopathological features are well described, diagnosis is often difficult, owing to presence of extensive coagulative necrosis, so that repeated biopsies may sometimes be necessary for correct diagnosis. Literature on cytological findings of ENKTL is limited. METHODS: Cytomorphological features of cases of histologically confirmed ENKTL having corresponding cytology sa

Palisaded Encapsulated (Solitary Circumscribed) Neuroma of the Buccal Mucosa: a Rare Case.

The rarity of oral soft tissue spindle cell tumors combined with overlapping microscopic patterns can make challenges in their diagnosis and treatment. Oral cavity palisaded encapsulated neuroma is an uncommon lesion which occurs often on the hard palate. It is essential for oral pathologists to be familiar with its histopathology of this lesion is essential since many lesions are probably diagnosed microscopically as neurofibroma or schwannoma. Here, we report a case of oral palisaded encapsulated (solitary circumscribed) neuroma in an unusual site.

A t(5;16) translocation is the likely driver of a syndrome with ambiguous genitalia, facial dysmorphism, intellectual disability, and speech delay.

Genetic studies grounded on monogenic paradigms have accelerated both gene discovery and molecular diagnosis. At the same time, complex genomic rearrangements are also appreciated as potent drivers of disease pathology. Here, we report two male siblings with a dysmorphic face, ambiguous genitalia, intellectual disability, and speech delay. Through quad-based whole-exome sequencing and concomitant molecular cytogenetic testing, we identified two copy-number variants (CNVs) in both affected individuals likely arising from a balanced translocation: a 13.5-Mb duplication on Chromosome 16 (16q23.1

Clinical Variability in a Family with an Ectodermal Dysplasia Syndrome and a Nonsense Mutation in the TP63 Gene.

Mutations in the TP63 gene have been associated with a variety of ectodermal dysplasia syndromes, among which the clinically overlapping Ankyloblepharon-Ectodermal defects-Cleft lip/palate (AEC) and the Rapp-Hodgkin syndromes. We report a multiplex nonconsanguineous family of Ashkenazi-Jewish descent, in which the index patient presented with a persistent scalp skin lesion, dystrophic nails and light thin hair. Further evaluation revealed over 10 affected individuals in the kindred, over four generations, exhibiting varying degrees of ectodermal involvement. Analysis of the TP63 gene from four

Myoepithelial carcinoma of palate: case report.

Myoepithelial carcinoma is an uncommon malignant salivary gland neoplasm with a predilection for parotid gland. However, its occurrence in minor salivary glands is considerably less with only 28 cases being reported in the literature. We report a case of myoepithelial carcinoma of palate in a 50-year-old woman. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an extensive lesion in the palate. Microscopically, the tumor exhibited a wide spectrum of cytomorphologic features that overlap with other salivary gland tumors. Immunohistochemistry served as an adjunct in the diagnosis of th

Role of FNAC in the Preoperative Diagnosis of Salivary Gland Lesions.

BACKGROUND: The characteristic cytologic features of the common salivary gland lesions have been well-delineated in literature. However, there also exist cytologic pitfalls and overlapping features that make an accurate diagnosis difficult in few cases. The present study was designed to compare the cytologic findings of salivary gland lesions with the histologic diagnoses, in order to assess the sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic accuracy of FNAC, with an emphasis on discordant cases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with suspected salivary gland enlargements, who were referred for FNAC,

Oral manifestations of lupus erythematosus - report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Lupus erythematosus is a serious autoimmune disease, which can cause oral mucosal lesions, manifesting as white striae and erythematous, atrophic and hyperkeratotic areas, as well as erosions and ulcerations. Sometimes, these signs can be misdiagnosed as other oral diseases such as lichen planus. Also, on histopathological examination with haematoxylin-eosin staining (HE), the features of these diseases can overlap. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors report here two cases of oral lesions of lupus erythematosus, with a discussion of their clinical features and the process of differ

The importance of team work of cytologist and surgeon in preoperative diagnosis of intraoral minor salivary gland tumours.

Tumours arising from oral minor salivary glands may exhibit an overlap of clinical and morphological features that may produce diagnostic and therapeutic dilemmas. The aim of this study is to asses the value of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in differentiation of benign and malignant tumours and to render a specific diagnosis. We evaluated the team work of surgeon and cytologist to improve diagnostic accuracy. Two steps are important for accuracy: sampling aspirate that should be done together by surgeon and cytologist and cytological microscopic analysis of the smears that should be p

Resorption: within or without? The benefit of cone-beam computed tomography when diagnosing a case of an internal/external resorption defect.

Maxillary canines are the second most common teeth to become impacted, following third molars. Variable levels of incidence have been reported but roughly fall between 1-2.5%. The aetiology of impaction is unknown but both environmental and genetic factors have been suggested. The majority of impacted canines are palatally displaced and such ectopic teeth can be associated with various complications. Rarely this may include cystic or tumourous lesions of the dental follicle or, more commonly, resorption of adjacent teeth. This has a reported incidence of between 12% and 68% depending on the mo

Novel karyotypes in giant cell-rich lesions of bone.

Giant cell-rich lesions of bone, including giant cell tumor of bone, giant cell reparative granuloma (GCRG), and aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC), may have overlapping clinical, radiologic, and histopathologic features. In fact, GCRG and solid ABC are currently differentiated solely based on skeletal location. Prior cytogenetic studies have reported that telomeric associations are present in the majority of giant cell tumors of bone, whereas translocations involving 16q22 and/or 17p13 are characteristic of ABCs. There is only one previously published karyotype of a GCRG, which revealed a reciprocal
