[Oral-facial-digital syndrome type I. A case report].

Oral-facial-digital syndrome type I (OFDI) is a congenital X-linked dominant disorder characterized by anomalies of the oral cavity, face and digits sometimes associated to cerebral malformations and polycystic kidney disease. The gene, responsible for this syndrome, is ofd1. Clinically it is seen only in females. Lesions of the mouth include median pseudoclefting of the upper lip, clefts of the palate and tongue, and dental anomalies (missing or supernumerary teeth, enamel hypoplasia, and teeth malpositions). Dysmorphic features affecting the head include hypertelorism, frontal bossing, micro

A patient with extensive blue rubber bleb nevi associated with multiple congenital anomalies: an overlap or a new syndrome?

We report a case of a 13 year old boy with non-familial, multiple blue rubber bleb nevi (BRBN). He also had additional dysmorphic anomalies including a low hairline, low set ears, narrow nares, ptosis, hypotelorism, a high arched palate and downward slanting of the outer canthi. Skeletal deformities included a short, slightly webbed neck, kyphosis, cubitus valgus, non-traumatic luxation of the head of the right radius and a short left little and index fingers. He had no evidence of gastrointestinal lesions or bleeding, congenital heart or renal disease or enchondromata. The boy was mentally sl

[Clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical studies of midline malignant reticulosis in palate].

Fourteen patients (10 males and 4 females) with midline malignant reticulosis (MMR) in palate were studied. The symptoms were most commonly swelling and ulceration. In some cases, the lesion involved nasal, maxillary sinus and facial skin, but no regional lymph nodes were involved. A necrotizing infiltration of atypical lymphoid cells (ALCs) mixed with inflammatory cells was confirmed as the histopathologic feature of MMR. In 2 of 14 cases, ALCs formed a continuous sheet in several high-power fields with a few inflammatory cells. This overlapping feature may be a transitional form between MMR

[Computed tomography in the study of periodontal disease].

Periodontal disease, an affection of bacterial etiology, causes the destruction of the periodontal tissue. From both the diagnostic and the prognostic points of view, it is extremely important to evaluate the changes occurring in the alveolar bone in patients affected with periodontal disease. The information obtained by conventional radiographic techniques is usually poor due to the overlapping of anatomical structures and to the lack of an axial view of the structures. CT, thanks to millimetrical sections of the dental structures along the planes which parallel the hard palate, allows the ev

Vesiculo-bullous mucocutaneous disease: benign mucous membrane and bullous pemphigoid.

Bullous pemphigoid (BP) and benign mucous membrane pemphigoid (BMMP) are autoimmune diseases characterised by subepithelial bulla formation and showing substantial overlap in clinical signs and symptoms. BP principally involves skin and BMMP the oral mucosa and eyes. The gingiva are affected in 90% of cases of BMMP and buccal mucosa and palate in up to 30%. Lesions may heal with scarring. Extension into the pharynx and esophagus causes sore throat and dysphagia. Severe ocular involvement may cause blindness. Bulla formation is attributed to complement activation, following IgG binding to the b
