Photoperiod driven modulation of behavior, gut microbiota, and brain transcriptomics in zebrafish.

Circadian rhythms regulate physiological and behavioural processes, with the light-dark cycle acting as the principal environmental cue synchronising the biological clock; disruption of this cue can affect brain function and behaviour. Using zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a translational model, we examined how chronic photoperiod alteration, applied from the larval stage to adulthood, affects exploratory activity, anxiety-like behaviour, aggression, and social preference, and whether these changes are paralleled by shifts in gut microbiota composition and brain transcriptomic profile. Zebrafish we

Akkermansia muciniphila WW001 protects against DSS-induced colitis by restoring intestinal barrier integrity and modulating inflammatory responses.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic, relapsing disorder intimately linked to impaired intestinal barrier function. Akkermansia muciniphila, a beneficial gut bacterium, has been shown to enhance intestinal barrier function. This study aimed to characterize a newly identified strain, A. muciniphila WW001, and evaluate its protective effects on intestinal barrier integrity in IBD models. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced Caco-2/HT29-MTX cell model and dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced mouse model were employed to assess its protective effects on intestinal barrier function. Whole-geno

Functional similarity shapes global patterns of fish naturalization and invasion richness.

Freshwater ecosystems are among the most threatened by biological invasions, but it remains unclear why some exotics are more likely to be successful (known as naturalization success) and why some communities tend to harbor more exotics than others (measured as invasion richness). Here, using trait-based analysis, we addressed the knowledge gaps based on data from 1,691 fish communities worldwide. We found a latitudinal pattern of naturalization success, showing that successful exotic species were functionally more similar to native species at high latitudes than at low latitudes. Furthermore,

Biophysically inspired mean-field model of neuronal populations driven by ion-exchange mechanisms.

Whole-brain simulations are a valuable tool for gaining insight into the multiscale processes that regulate brain activity. Due to the complexity of the brain, it is impractical to include all microscopic details in a simulation. Hence, researchers often simulate the brain as a network of coupled neural masses, each described by a mean-field model. These models capture the essential features of neuronal populations while approximating most biophysical details. However, it may be important to include certain parameters that significantly impact brain function. The concentration of ions in the e

Reassessment of the Early Cretaceous North American "troodontid" Geminiraptor suarezarum as a therizinosaurian and mosaic evolution of coelurosaurian maxillae.

The only recorded member of the bird-like Troodontidae from Early Cretaceous North America is Geminiraptor suarezarum, known from an isolated maxilla recovered from the Suarez Site bonebed of the basal Cedar Mountain Formation (Utah, USA). Geminiraptor would be one of the geologically oldest and largest-bodied troodontids on the continent and a key taxon for understanding evolutionary, ecological, and biogeographic patterns in this clade. However, the association of the holotype specimen with a monodominant therizinosaurian bonebed, a poor understanding of early therizinosaurian crania, and a

Systematic identification of p11 as a signaling modulator across the GPCRome.

The microprotein p11 (S100A10) is a ubiquitously expressed molecular scaffold that is known to be required for behavioral responses to certain antidepressants, presumably through its effect on G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR)-mediated signaling. Here, we demonstrate that p11 recruitment to GPCRs is promoted by an active receptor conformation. Furthermore, by mapping the GPCR-p11 interactome using a multiplexed suspension bead array (SBA) of 211 receptors, we identified more than two dozen high-confidence physical interactors across diverse GPCR signaling families. We define the functional sig

The seminal microbiome/microbiota and implications for antibiotics in semen extenders.

The seminal microbiota is an integral component of fertility, both through its role in maintaining the health of the male reproductive tract and its contribution to the microbiota of the female reproductive tract. Many factors affect the dynamics of the seminal microbiota, such as the age and breed of the animal, and the husbandry conditions under which it is kept. Animal breeders introduce semen storage, representing an additional potential source of contamination. It is during this storage that the seminal microbiota can have an additional influence on sperm quality, permitting some bacteria

Evaluation of combined dietary strategies and management of photoperiod as means to mitigate breast muscle myopathies in broiler chickens.

Breast muscle myopathies (BMMs), including white striping (WS), wooden breast (WB), and spaghetti meat (SM), represent a major challenge in broiler production. Using a 2 × 2 factorial design, this study evaluated the main effects of dietary treatment and photoperiod modification, as well as their interaction, on BMM occurrence, productive performance, and meat quality. A total of 1 908 one-day-old male chicks were randomly assigned to four experimental groups. Birds were subjected to either a standard photoperiod (STP) or a short photoperiod (SHP), which included two additional hours of darkne

Characterization of the phage lysin LYS176 targeting Staphylococcus aureus and its antibacterial activity in food.

Lysin LYS176, derived from Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteriophage, exerts its bactericidal effect by hydrolyzing peptidoglycan within the bacterial cell wall, leading to rapid cell lysis. Lysin LYS176 exhibited antibacterial activity against 62 strains of S. aureus and maintained strong lytic activity within the temperature range of 10-35 °C and the pH range of 4.0-11.0. However, its lytic activity decreased with increasing NaCl concentration. Additionally, LYS176 effectively degrades biofilms, inhibits and kills S. aureus, without exhibiting any cytotoxic effects on red blood cells o

Beyond single-cell sensory representations in cortex.

How is information encoded in the cerebral cortex, and how is it used? We review coding in sensory cortex, primarily in barrel cortex. Traditional single-cell analyses of barrel cortex have revealed features like somatotopy, tuning to angle of whisker deflection, and sensitivity to deflection velocity. A growing number of studies have, however, demonstrated mixed selectivity of individual neurons for sensory, movement, and task-related variables, re-emphasizing the need to consider population activity while investigating neural computation. Population representations may underpin an animal's a

1,2-DCE exposure induces autophagosome accumulation and neuronal death via the ROS-JNK/c-Fos/c-Jun/FoxO1/FoxO3a axis.

As a ubiquitous organic pollutant in industrial settings, 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCE) has been documented to induce cognitive impairment; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. In our animal experiments, mice were exposed to 0, 0.225, 0.45, and 0.9 g/m3 of 1,2-DCE via static whole-body inhalation for 3.5 h daily over 56 days. Our results demonstrate that 56-day repeated 1,2-DCE exposure induces oxidative damage, activates autophagy, and promotes apoptosis in mouse hippocampal neural cells. We also observed impaired lysosomal function following 1,2-DCE treatment

Comparative proteomics and metabolomics of milk digesta during simulated infant gastrointestinal digestion: Novel insights into quantitative differences among bovine, sheep, and goat milks.

This study compared the digestion behavior, protein composition, and metabolite profiles of bovine (B), sheep (S), and goat (G) milk digesta following simulated in vitro infant gastrointestinal digestion. Microstructural analysis indicated that goat milk underwent slower digestive progression during the gastric phase relative to bovine milk. Data-independent acquisition (DIA) proteomics and untargeted metabolomics were applied to characterize differentially abundant proteins (DAPs) and metabolites (DAMs). A total of 107 DAPs were identified across all samples, including CSN1S1, CNDP2, GP2, FLO

Moderately elevated salinity rapidly promotes oyster meat yield by rewiring ammonia transport and metabolic networks.

Oysters are rich in high-quality proteins, and their aquaculture is experiencing rapid expansion driven by the increasing demand for premium aquatic products. Yet, the continuous expansion of aquaculture has resulted in a rapid decline in oyster fattening, posing a serious threat to global food security. Here, we demonstrated that moderately high salinity boosted oyster fattening by stimulating ammonia transport processes that drove oyster metabolic acceleration. Non-destructive micro-test technology revealed that different salinity conditions significantly altered the fluxes rates of NH4+ and

Optimizing omega-3 supplementation in chronically ill dogs: The impact of body weight and dietary inclusion rates.

Nutritional supplement dosages for dogs are often expressed relative to overall body weight (BW). However, daily food intake scales with metabolic weight (BW0.75). This discrepancy implies that the ingested dose of supplements included in diets does not increase linearly with BW. This study evaluated the impact of this phenomenon on omega-3 supplementation, comparing the theoretical efficacy of extruded therapeutic diets using cardiac (dosage expressed by BW) and chronic kidney disease (dosage expressed by BW0.75) dosage models. The theoretical dietary intake of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and

First serological evidence of Coxiella burnetii exposure in domestic ruminants in Somalia: Implications for one health surveillance.

The recent serological detection of Coxiella burnetii exposure in Somali livestock (12.6% seroprevalence among 372 ruminants) is an important addition to the limited epidemiological evidence on zoonotic disease ecology in the Horn of Africa. This finding, combined with prior molecular evidence of a novel C. burnetii genotype (D21) in ticks infesting Somali camels and high seroprevalence (21.4%) in febrile patients in neighboring Ethiopia, provides a rationale for investigating Q fever as a potentially under-recognized zoonosis in the region. However, critical knowledge gaps persist, including

Molecular detection and phylogenetic characterization of Megalocytivirus pagrus 1 (ISKNV) in ornamental fish imported to the Republic of Korea.

A total of 294 pooled samples from ten species were tested for the presence of Megalocytivirus pagrus 1 in a two-year survey. Among them, Megalocytivirus pagrus 1 was detected from 36 samples (pool prevalence of 12.24%) by PCR assay targeting the major capsid protein (MCP) gene. The MCP gene from five representative positives was sequenced. Pairwise identity and maximum-likelihood phylogenetic analyses based on MCP nucleotide sequences indicated close genetic relatedness between the five sequences obtained in this study and ISKNV Clade 1 reference sequences; four sequences exhibited ≥99.68% nu

Bacterial Cytochrome C Orchestrates Larval Metamorphosis Through Bioelectrical Control of Extracellular Vesicles Biogenesis.

Beyond the well-established roles in biomedical processes, extracellular vesicles (EVs) from Gram-negative bacteria are now identified as potent inducers of larval metamorphosis in marine invertebrates, a critical process for sustaining the health and function of global marine ecosystems. However, the specific inductive molecules within EVs remain largely unknown. Our findings reveal that cytochrome c (CytC), a previously unrecognized chemical signal packaged within EVs, induces larval metamorphosis. CytC maturation is essential for this process, as it enhances the efficiency of electron trans
