Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) are essential for vision perception. In glaucoma and other optic neuropathies, RGCs and their optic axons undergo degenerative change and cell death; this can result in irreversible vision loss. Here we developed a rapid protocol for directly inducing RGC differentiation from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) by the overexpression of ATOH7, BRN3B, and SOX4. The hiPSC-derived RGC-like cells (iRGCs) show robust expression of various RGC-specific markers by whole transcriptome profiling. A functional assessment was also carried out and this demonstrated t

Intracranial tuberculosis (TB) is the most serious form of systemic TB and constitutes an important cause of morbidity and mortality in underdeveloped countries. Central nervous system TB is a difficult diagnosis to make, and treat, especially in the developing nations. Intracranial hemorrhage is one of the rare complications of intracranial TB. We are reporting a case of a 70-year-old male patient who presented to the neurology ward with complaints of persistent high-grade fever associated with significant weight loss, night sweats, and hemolysis for two months. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis w

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system tuberculosis (CNS TB) is a severe Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection. It is unclear whether a patient's immune status alters the clinical manifestations and treatment outcomes of CNS TB.
METHODS: Between January 2007-December 2018, chart reviews of CNS TB, including tuberculous meningitis (TBM), tuberculoma/abscess, and TB myelitis, were made. Subjects were categorized as immunodeficient (ID) and non-immunodeficient (NID).
RESULTS: Of 310 subjects, 160 (51.6%) were in the ID group-132 (42.6%) had HIV and 28 (9.0%) had another ID, and 150 (48.4%) wer

Sarcoidosis is a systemic, granulomatous disease of unknown etiology, most often manifested by mediastinal and hilar lymph node enlargement and parenchymal nodules in the lungs. However, it may involve any other organ. Neuro-sarcoidosis, a condition that affects up to 20% of sarcoidosis patients, can be found in any part of the central or peripheral nervous system and has important ophthalmic and neuro-ophthalmic manifestations. We present two patients with sudden vision loss due to neurosarcoidosis. In both cases, biopsy of the mediastinal lymph node showed non-caseating granulomas consistent

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this article, we reviewed 67 reported cases of linezolid optic neuropathy and describe the common characteristics and expectations for recovery with an emphasis on recent findings in the literature.
RECENT FINDINGS: Linezolid classically causes a reversible, duration-dependent optic neuropathy. However, in our review, we found only 66.7% of patients recovered complete visual function. Vision loss most commonly affected visual acuity followed by visual field and color vision. We also found patients taking higher doses of linezolid experienced full recovery less often, sug

Growth hormone is among the most common hormones to be deficient in pituitary insult. It can occur either in isolation or combined with other hormone deficiencies. Growth hormone deficiency in adults (AGHD) can be due to causes acquired in adulthood or have a childhood-onset etiology, but the former is about three times more common. Usual causes of AGHD include mass effects due to a pituitary tumour, and/or its treatment (surgery, medical therapy, or radiotherapy), or radiotherapy to the head and neck region for non-pituitary lesions. The unusual or lesser-known causes of AGHD, are usually due

Behçet's disease is a systemic vasculitis frequently associated with intraocular inflammation. Recent findings identified independent clinical clusters in Behçet's disease, each involving distinct combinations of affected organs. Ocular Behçet's disease, mainly manifested as uveitis, is characterized as an independent cluster with a low likelihood of association with other system involvements, such as intestinal, cardiovascular, or central nervous system. A prevailing theory suggests that the pathogenesis of the disease is multifactorial, where a variety of genetic and infectious agents may in

Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is a challenging disease to treat, as Mycobacterium tuberculosis infects the meninges, which are the outer membranes of the brain and the spinal cord. The majority of patients diagnosed with TBM acquire various other central nervous system complications, and as a result, treating the disease becomes a challenging task. A paradoxical reaction to the treatment may occur in the course of managing TBM. This case study describes a 20-year-old Southeast Asian female who was diagnosed and treated for TBM and subsequently developed a resurgence of the disease due to a para

Recent advances in Nanotechnology have revolutionized the production of materials for biomedical applications. Nowadays, there is a plethora of nanomaterials with potential for use towards improvement of human health. On the other hand, very little is known about how these materials interact with biological systems, especially at the nanoscale level, mainly because of the lack of specific methods to probe these interactions. In this review, we will analytically describe the journey of nanoparticles (NPs) through the brain, starting from the very first moment upon injection. We will preliminari

INTRODUCTION: Central nervous system tuberculosis (CNSTB) is a severe condition, sometimes associated with a poor prognosis. Early diagnosis of CNSTB remains challenging, considering that conventional methods lack sensitivity or might lead to certain side effects. Herein, we presented a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the diagnostic efficacy of MRI for CNSTB.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: SinoMed, Wanfang database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Embase, the Cochrane Library and PubMed will be searched to identify studies reporting on the use of MRI in the diagno

INTRODUCTION: Acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) or acute febrile encephalopathy is a clinical condition characterized by altered mental status occurring after or along with a short febrile illness. In developing countries, infections are the predominant cause of AES. Prominent infections known to cause AES include viruses (such as herpes simplex virus [HSV], Japanese Encephalitis [JE] virus, dengue, enteroviruses [EVs]), bacteria, fungus, and parasites. In the present study, we aim to analyze the etiology, clinical features, and predictors of mortality in patients presenting with acute febrile

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system (CNS) tuberculomas are rare and account for approximately 1% of all tuberculosis (TB) cases. These intracranial lesions are more commonly observed in immunocompromised individuals, often as part of disseminated miliary TB or after latent infection reactivation. This case report presents the occurrence of a thalamic tuberculoma in an immunocompetent girl.
CASE DESCRIPTION: An 11-year-old girl presented with a 3-month history of progressive right-sided ataxic hemiparesis, hand dystonia/thalamic hand, and headache. There was only a mildly elevated erythrocyte s

Tuberculosis of the cervical spine is a rare but deadly form of tuberculosis (TB), where the infection affects the cervical vertebrae or bones of the neck. It is also known as Pott's disease. The causative organism is Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It usually occurs when TB bacteria spread from other body parts, such as the lungs, to the cervical vertebrae through the bloodstream or lymphatic system. It also shows extrapulmonary involvement, including the central nervous, genitourinary, and lymphatic systems, bones, and joints. Tuberculosis of the spine is often seen. Cervical spine tuberculosis

The significance of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) detection in the cerebrospinal spinal fluid (CSF) in people living with HIV (PLWH) is not entirely understood. The detection of EBV DNA may represent active central nervous system (CNS) infection, reactivation in the setting of another CNS pathogen or due to impaired immunity, or detection of quiescent virus. We screened 470 adult PLWH in Zambia with neurological symptoms for the presence of EBV DNA in the CSF. We performed quantitative EBV PCR on the CSF and blood. We then performed quantitative EBV DNA PCR on the blood of controls with documented

Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is a rare disease in low-incidence countries like Japan, where general physicians have fewer experience with TBM. Despite its proper treatment and early improvement of the condition, TBM often causes paradoxical reactions (PRs), which can lead to severe complications such as stroke. As PRs in the brain are difficult to detect without regular neuroimaging surveillance and have a later onset than in other organs, delayed treatment can be fatal. We report a case of a 54-year-old, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-negative man who presented with TBM and miliary tuberc

Neurotuberculosis is defined as a tuberculous infection of the meninges, brain parenchyma, vessels, cranial and spinal nerves, spinal cord, skull, and spine that can occur either in a localized or in a diffuse form. It is a heterogeneous disease characterized by many imaging appearances and it has been defined as "the great mimicker" due to similarities with many other conditions. The diagnosis of central nervous system (CNS) tuberculosis (TB) is based on clinical presentation, neuroimaging findings, laboratory and microbiological findings, and comprehensive evaluation of the response to anti-
