We describe a 5.3-year-old girl with autism, mental retardation, hypotonia, marked speech delay, and mild dysmorphic features with a 22q11.2 duplication. Her mother carries the same duplication and presents cleft palate, and normal intelligence. We assessed oral cancer mortality data in São Paulo to study trends of the disease and its distribution by areas of the city. We standardized death rates by gender and age group, and also supplied complementary information regarding oral cancer incidence. We studied major malformations in 5,581 infants with Down syndrome (DS) from three registers of congenital malformations. THe prevalence at birth of 23 different malformations was compared with the program-specific rates for each malformation in non-DS infants. This study of patients with functional psychoses set out to examine associations between minor physical anomalies (MPAs) and demographic, clinical, CT scan measures, and putative aetiological variables. 157 psychotic patients had minor physical anomalies assessed using a modified Waldrop scale. This report describes an exploratory population-based study of maternal and perinatal risk factors for childhood leukemia in Sweden. The Swedish National Cancer Registry ascertained 411 cases in successive birth cohorts from 1973 through 1984 recorded in the Swedish Medical Birth Registry. This study assessed potential teratogenic properties of benzodiazepine (BZD) intake during early pregnancy. Four neonatal diagnoses of congenital malformations (embryopathy and fetopathy, unspecified; unspecified congenital malformations of the nervous system; cleft palate and cleft lip; congenital malformations of the urinary tract) were selected. The authors' previous clinical experience had shown these diagnoses to be characteristic of infants born to mothers with excessive intake of BZD in early pregnancy. A review of case history records showed that 80 postoperative cleft palate cases with velopharyngeal incompetence and hypernasal voice quality had received speech therapy once or twice a week for unspecified periods of time but were unable to produce normal nasal resonance prior to the fitting of a nasopharyngeal prosthesis.
