Associations between recovery of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans from samples of subgingival plaque, and samples of buccal mucosa, tongue and unstimulated saliva were studied in 107 subjects. Ten subjects had gingivitis, 18 localized juvenile periodontitis, 45 rapidly progressive periodontitis and 32 adult periodontitis. Two children suffered from prepubertal periodontitis. To achieve the visualization of regional lymph nodes by lymphoscintigraphy, 21 patients with head-and-neck cancer were studied with the aid of 99mTc-labeled rhenium sulfur colloid (99mTc Re). The effects of smokeless tobacco (snuff) on hamster cheek mucosa were studied by light microscopy, transmission (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A two-stage endosseous implant, placed in the retromolar area of the mandible was utilized as rigid anchorage to translate two molars 10-12 millimeters mesially into an atrophic endentulous ridge. Superficial mucoceles are innocuous, small, clear vesicles that have a predilection for the soft palate, posterior buccal mucosa, and retromolar area. Microscopically, they are subepithelial extravasations of sialomucin that occur at the epithelial connective tissue interface. The clinical features are usually so characteristic that the diagnosis does not require biopsy confirmation. No treatment is required.

This report comprises a retrospective review of the clinical data on 157 patients seen in the Auckland area having a diagnosis of cancer of the tongue, floor of the mouth, inferior alveolus, or buccal mucosa (retromolar area, vestibule of the mouth, and cheek mucosa) during 1970-86. One hundred patients were male, 95% were European, 85% were cigarette smokers, and 58% had a history of high alcohol intake. Fine-needle aspirates from 12 cases of malignant non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the oral cavity were cytologically classified according to the Kiel classification. A primary hepatocellular carcinoma associated with underlying hemochromatosis appeared as a metastatic mandibular lesion. A swelling of the retromolar area and mandibular paresthesia were the presenting complaints. Hepatocellular carcinoma rarely metastasizes to the orofacial area. To our knowledge, only 18 cases have been reported. The clinical, radiographic, and histologic features of an additional case of hepatocellular carcinoma metastatic to the left posterior alveolar ridge is reported, and the literature is reviewed.
