The clinical and histological characteristics of 19 lipomas and fibrolipomas of the oral cavity are presented. Data on age, sex, location, clinical appearance, duration, recurrence and histological diagnosis are reviewed. The data gave a slightly higher incidence of oral lipomas in comparison with lipomas of the whole body (2.2%), and with benign tumours of the oral cavity (2.4%) than reported in the literature. Individual premolar teeth of 22 normal volunteers were stimulated via intradentinal electrodes using brief electrical pulses. Questionnaires were used to determine the qualities of sensations produced by this stimulation. Treatment of a severe tethering of the mandible by surgery and subsequent exercise of the jaw with a newly devised mouth gag, consisting of two blocks of acrylic resin with a screw expander between them, is described. The mandible was gradually forced to open and was retained in the opened position by rotating the screw against the resistance of scar contraction without much pain. Possible development of trismus after excision of a tumor in the lower retromolar area because of surgical injury to the medial pterygoid muscle and postoperative scarring was avoided by means of the appliance.

A 16 year experience with 121 patients treated for squamous cell carcinoma arising in the cheek mucosa is described. Treatment was almost exclusively surgical, and 5 year determinate cure rates ranged from 77 and 65 percent in stage I and II lesions to 27 and 18 percent in those with stage III and IV lesions, respectively. Twenty-four percent of previously treated patients remained alive and well at 5 years. The presence of sebaceous glands within the oral mucosa is not uncommon. Such Fordyce granules are frequently seen on the buccal mucosa and lips, as well as in the retromolar area, gingiva, and palate. Whereas sebaceous elements are rarely encountered on the tongue, three cases of ectopic sebaceous glands have been reported in association with apparently patent thyroglossal ducts. An interesting case of a previously unreported sebaceous choristoma of the thyroglossal duct is described.

In an attempt to predict which cases of oral and oropharyngeal squamous carcinoma are likely to metastasize to regional lymph nodes a series of 898 cases was grouped according to site, size, grade of histological differentiation, and presence or absence of histologically confirmed regional lymph node metastases. Erythroplakia of the oral cavity is a specific disease entity which must be differentiated from other specific or nonspecific inflammatory oral lesions, although this can only be done in most cases by biopsy. During a 13-year period, 3256 specimens clinically diagnosed as leukoplakia (('keratosis," "white patch") were submitted to the oral pathology laboratories of Indiana University School of Dentistry and Emory University School of Dentistry.
