Nonsurgical treatment of an adult with skeletal Class III malocclusion, anterior crossbite, and an impacted canine.

Class III malocclusion presents some complexity in terms of diagnosis and treatment and affects not only the jaws but the whole craniofacial complex. Besides, functional forward displacement of the mandible may be diagnosed in a patient presenting Class III malocclusion, as the 2 entities are not incompatible or mutually exclusive. This case report describes the multidisciplinary, nonsurgical, orthodontic treatment of an adult patient with a skeletal Class III malocclusion, anterior crossbite, and a palatally impacted canine, treated with fixed appliances and skeletal anchorage. To upright the

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of retromolar area: an incidental finding.

Salivary gland tumours can arise in any location in the oral cavity but are rather rare in the retromolar region. The majority of the salivary neoplasms arising here are malignant in nature. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is more commonly seen in the palate. Tumours arising in the retromolar region tend to show symptoms late in onset and may be greater in extent than evident clinically. Imaging studies will help in understanding the full extent of these lesions. We report a case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising in a young female patient who reported for orthodontic correction. In the course of ex

Does the Retromolar Area Provide Adequate Space for an Oral Endotracheal Tube Without Interfering With Intermaxillary Fixation?

PURPOSE: Traumatic maxillofacial injuries requiring intermaxillary fixation (IMF) traditionally necessitate airway management via tracheostomy or submental intubation. The aim of this study is to understand whether the retromolar space can accommodate passage of a reinforced endotracheal tube (ETT) without interfering with establishing IMF, a technique previously described as retromolar intubation. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was created including previously treated facial trauma patients by our department as the study sample. From this group, 3D reconstructed scans were cr

[The extrosseous/peripheral ameloblastoma in the aesthetic area of the maxilla: a presentation of a possible approach aiming an aesthetic satisfying rehabilitation. a case report].

Extraosseous/peripheral Ameloblastoma (EPA) is a rare, benign odontogenic soft tissue tumour with the same histological characteristics as the more common intraosseous subtypes. The EPA appears in the soft tissue of the gingiva and the mucosa of the alveolar process often as unspecified painless swelling. The present case report describes an EPA in the aesthetic area of the left anterior maxilla. Based on the clinical finding the suspected diagnosis of a gingival cyst was made. Firstly, this case should highlight the importance of a proper histopathologic evaluation whenever a biopsy is perfor

COVID-19 - Infection prevention in prisons and jails in Poland.

BACKGROUND: Acetaminophen and 5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 (5-HT3) receptor antagonists are administered as standard prophylaxes for postoperative pain, nausea, and vomiting. Preclinical studies, however, suggest that 5-HT3 antagonists may compromise acetaminophen's analgesic effect. This hospital registry study investigates whether 5-HT3 antagonists mitigate the analgesic effect of prophylactic acetaminophen in a perioperative setting. METHODS: This study included 55,016 adult patients undergoing general anesthesia for ambulatory procedures at a tertiary healthcare center in Massachusetts from

Identification of elastofibroma and elastofibroma-like lesions in cases diagnosed as oral fibromas.

We investigated elastofibromas (EF) and elastofibroma-like structures (EFL) in 95 cases that had been diagnosed as oral fibromas (OF). Histological sections were stained with Verhoeff-Van Gieson, Congo red and hematoxylin and eosin to enable possible reclassification to EF or EFL, or to retain the diagnosis of OF. To do this, we identified amyloid and used histopathological descriptions and epidemiological clinical profiles. We found 56 EF and 21 EFL cases, while 18 diagnoses of OF were retained. We observed a predilection for EF in females. Also, the most common site for OF was the cheek muco
