Not your father's homodonty-stress, tooth shape, and the functional homodont.

Teeth tell the tale of interactions between predator and prey. If a dental battery is made up of teeth that look similar, they are morphologically homodont, but if there is an unspecified amount of regional specialization in size or shape, they are morphologically heterodont. These are vague terms with no useful functional implication because morphological homodonty does not necessarily equal functional homodonty. Teeth that look the same may not function the same. Conical teeth are prevalent in fishes, superficially tasked with the simple job of puncture. There is a great deal of variation in

Adenoid cystic carcinoma cytology: Salivary gland and nonsalivary gland.

OBJECTIVES: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACCA) is an uncommon primary malignancy of salivary glands and rarely nonsalivary tissue. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of ACCA on fine needle aspiration (FNA) material and the associated challenges. METHODS: A search on electronic pathology database from 2006 to 2016 at The Johns Hopkins Hospital found 83 cytology specimens diagnosed as ACCA, 49 with histology follow-up. RESULTS: Fifty-two females and 31 males were found ranging from 37 to 95 years old (mean 62.5). The tumor size was 1 to 11.5 cm (mean 3.4). FNAs were performed on

Pleomorphic adenoma of buccal mucosa: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland neoplasms are rare, accounting for 3% to 5% of all head and neck tumors, and involvement of the minor salivary glands is uncommon. Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign neoplasm, which mainly affects the parotid gland. However, involvement of the cheek mucosa is very rare. OBJECTIVE: This study reports a case of PA in the cheek mucosa. In addition, the etiopathogenesis, clinical and morphological features and differential diagnoses of PA are discussed, emphasizing the importance of knowledge about the characteristics of this tumor for a correct diagnosi

Cephalic Tetanus: A Rare Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Tetanus is a preventable infectious disease with vaccination. Cephalic tetanus is the rarest form in which local tetanus can involve the cranial nerves. CASE: Herein, we report a case of cephalic tetanus in a 16-month-old girl who had never been vaccinated. The patient, who had a complaint of a wound on the cheek mucosa for 2 weeks, was seen playing with the soil in the garden 1 week ago and was found to have abundant soil removed by her mother. The patient was diagnosed as cephalic tetanus according to her complaints and clinical findings. DISCUSSION: We believe that, this is

Full-thickness total upper eyelid reconstruction with a lid switch flap and a reverse superficial temporal artery flap.

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of the upper eyelid with the same eyelid tissue is desirable because of the ability to achieve eye opening/closing and corneal protection, and a lid switch flap is a useful method. For total defects, almost all of the tissues of the lower eyelid should be used; however, the reconstruction of the lower eyelid donor site has often been undervalued. Reconstruction with an insufficient amount of soft tissue often results in complications such as lagophthalmos and ectropion. Here, we report our method of management of total upper eyelid defects and secondary reconstructio

The effect of indocyanine green-mediated photodynamic therapy in healing of experimentally induced oral mucosal traumatic ulcer in rat.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising approach for the healing of ulcerative lesions. This study aimed to investigate the effect of PDT using indocyanine green (ICG) in the healing of the experimentally induced oral mucosal traumatic ulcer in rat. Sixty adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were recruited in this experimental study. The ulceration was surgically made in the left cheek mucosa, and the rats were randomly assigned into four equal groups (n = 15). Oral ulcers in groups 1 and 2 were treated with the sterile saline solution (0.9%) and ICG (1 mg/ml). In group 3, laser irradiation was ap

Oral non-specific lesions in patient with Crohn's disease - a case report.

UNLABELLED: Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic and granulomatous inflammatory disease of the entire gastrointestinal tract. The etiopathogenesis is not fully elucidated. The most common symptoms in the active phase of the disease include abdominal pain, prolonged diarrhea, fever, fatigue, malaise and weight loss. Oral manifestations of CD are classified into specific for CD with granulomatous changes and non-specific ones. This rare extraintestinal manifestation of CD in adults may precede gastrointestinal tract involvement, occur together or appear after years of its duration. Oral lesions can

Failure rates of mini-implants inserted in the retromolar area.

OBJECTIVE: Anchorage reinforcement is an important issue in orthodontic treatment. There is a lack of evidence regarding the failure rate of mini-implants inserted in the retromolar (RM) area, therefore the purpose of this present study was to evaluate the failure rates of mini-implants inserted in the RM area and to evaluate the factors affecting their stability. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study of 102 patients (52 female, 55 male; mean age: 18.6years; SD: 5.2years) that had received 110 RM mini-implants for orthodontic treatment from 1.2.2012 to 1.6.2017 was conducted a

Buccal Nerve Dissection Via an Intraoral Approach: Correcting an Error Regarding Buccal Nerve Blockade.

PURPOSE: The buccal nerve (BN) supplies sensation to the skin over the anterior part of the buccinator, buccal mucosa, and buccal gingivae corresponding to the second and third molar teeth. Some dental anatomy books depict the main trunk of the BN coursing over the buccal shelf of the mandible, which leads to a serious misunderstanding of this anatomy. Therefore, this study aimed to show the course of the BN on the retromolar area and establish new evidence-based anatomy for appropriate BN blockade. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty sides from 10 fresh-frozen Caucasian cadaveric heads were used i

Solitary plasmacytoma of mandible: A rare entity.

Plasmacytoma is a discrete, unifocal, monoclonal neoplastic proliferation of the plasma cells. It may present as one of the three distinct clinical entities: multiple myeloma (MM), solitary plasmacytoma of bone and extramedullary plasmacytoma. Solitary bone plasmacytoma accounts for 3% of all plasma cell neoplasms with approximately 50% of the cases transforming into MM. It is frequently seen in vertebrae and secondarily in long bones. Its presence in jaws is extremely rare and when it is seen, retromolar area, angle and ramus of the mandible are most common sites of occurrence. A comprehensiv

A new treatment for lingual nerve injury: an anatomical feasibility study for using a buccal nerve pedicle graft.

PURPOSE: Lingual nerve (LN) palsy is a serious complication in dentistry and repaired by direct suture or a free graft technique. To our knowledge, there has been no study using a (long) buccal nerve (BN) graft as a donor for LN repair. Therefore, we aimed to clarify the location of the BN and investigate if it is feasible to reroute the BN to the LN. METHODS: Twenty-four sides from 12 fresh-frozen Caucasian cadaveric heads were used in this study. The mean age at death was 73.9 ± 13.4 years. The LN was dissected on the floor of the oral cavity medial to the third molar tooth. Next, the mucos
