Natural distribution of oral Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans in young men with minimal periodontal disease.

A total of 1005 subgingival and extracrevicular samples from 201 male recruits, 18-25 yr old, were selectively cultivated for Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans. The organism was isolated in 55 subjects (27%); 9.5% of pooled subgingival plaque samples from first molars, 14% cheek mucosa, 20% dorsum of tongue and 20% saliva samples were culture-positive. In order to divide the study population into distinct clinical categories, cluster analysis was performed, based on previous caries experience, probing pocket depth categories, bleeding scores, visible plaque and calculus. Two clusters (n = 8

[The use of tongue flaps for oral tissue repair].

Pedicled tongue flaps have proven to be an effective method of repairing defects due to tissue loss in the oral cavity. Their rich vascular supply, mobility and close proximity to the lesion (lips, palate, floor of the mouth, cheek mucosa, oro- and hypopharynx) make the use of these flaps feasible in a variety of sites. After a review of the vascularity of the tongue, the possibilities of reconstruction will be discussed. The surgical procedure will be briefly documented with some clinical cases.

[Oral cavity changes in alcoholic patients].

The aim of this study was to look for pathological changes in the oral cavity in a group of 40 non cirrhotic male alcoholics, ranging in age from 30 to 40 years old. These subjects were compared with a group of 40 non alcoholic male subjects of similar age. The presence of lip, dental, periodontal, salivary gland and oral mucosa lesions was recorded. In alcoholics, pigmented lesions were observed in the lips in all the subjects (compared to 36% of controls), in the cheek mucosa in 65% and in the palate mucosa in 35.5%. Sixty five percent of alcoholics were partially edentate (compared to 32.5%

[Neurilemmoma (schwannoma) of the oral cavity. A report of 2 clinical cases].

Neurilemmoma (schwannoma) is a benign, encapsulated perineural tumor of neuroectodermal derivation that originates from the Schwann cells of the neural sheath of motor and sensitive peripheral nerves; the etiology is still unknown. The tumor is normally solitary, smooth-surfaced, slow growing and generally asymptomatic. It may develop at any age and there is no gender predilection. Head and neck are one of the most frequent localizations, but intraoral development is quite uncommon. In this area the mobile portion of the tongue, and in a decreasing order, the palate, the cheek mucosa, the lip

A histological morphometric study of nuclear size in benign and malignant neoplasms of the human cheek.

This report describes the application of simple morphometric methods to generate quantitative data on nuclear size from tissue sections of normal, benign and malignant oral epithelium of the cheek. Measurements of nuclear areas of basal and spinous cells from cheek mucosa were made on haematoxylin and eosin-stained sections using a Zeiss VIDAS image analyser. The lesions examined comprised benign squamous cell papillomas and islands of cells from invasive squamous cell carcinomas. Normal control epithelium was obtained from the biopsy margins of non-neoplastic lesions. The nuclear areas (AN) w

Tobacco and alcohol related to the anatomical site of oral squamous cell carcinoma.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the possible relationship between tobacco smoking and alcohol drinking and the anatomical sites of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the lip and oral cavity. For this purpose, a case-case study has been performed in 690 patients. The study was focused on the relative risk (RR) or developing SCC at various (sub)sites, for smokers and drinkers of alcohol (divided into moderate and heavy users) relative to non-smokers and non-drinkers. Estimates of ratios of these relative risks were obtained. The relative risk associated with tobacco smoking, adjusted

Postoperative bleeding tendency as a risk factor in Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans-associated periodontitis.

Frequent bleeding on probing (BOP) has been considered a risk factor for recurrence of periodontitis. In the present study, 29 patients with Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans-associated periodontitis were enrolled in a carefully performed recall system. At 6 sites per tooth, periodontal probing depth (PPD), gingival index (GI), plaque index (PlI) and BOP was assessed 6 weeks, 6 months, 1 and 2 years after comprehensive therapy. Professional toothcleaning and subgingival scaling at sites with PPD > or = 5 mm and BOP was carried out every 2nd or 3rd month. Subgingival samples from 2 sites, a

A light, transmission and scanning electron microscope study of snuff-treated hamster cheek pouch epithelium.

The effects of smokeless tobacco (snuff) on hamster cheek mucosa were studied by light microscopy, transmission (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Two grams of commercially available smokeless tobacco were placed into the blind end of the right cheek pouch of each experimental animal, once a day and five days a week for 24 months. The control animals did not receive smokeless tobacco. After 24 months treatment with smokeless tobacco, hamster cheek mucosal epithelium lost its translucency and had become whitish in color. By light microscopy hyperorthokeratosis, prominent granular cel

Multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome--type 2b. Case report and review.

The multiple endocrine neoplasia syndromes are an association of tumours of 2 or more endocrine glands. Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2b (MEN 2b) patients develop medullary thyroid carcinoma and pheochromocytomas as well as unique physical characteristics. Most commonly, MEN2b is inherited with an autosomal dominant pattern although sporadic cases are not uncommon. If untreated the disease may be lethal. The facial, oral and ocular characteristics are reliable markers of the disease. These patients give a history most commonly of slipped capital femoral epiphysis, hypertension and life-lon

Immunohistochemical localization of ethanol-inducible P450IIE1 in the rat alimentary tract.

To determine whether P450IIE1, a microsomal P450 enzyme inducible by ethanol in the liver, is also present and inducible in the alimentary tract, corresponding frozen tissue sections were prepared from rats pair-fed liquid diets containing 36% of total calories as either ethanol or carbohydrate (control) for 3 weeks. Immunohistochemical staining was performed using the peroxidase-antiperoxidase method after tissue sections were reacted with antibody against human P450IIE1. In control animals, immunoreactive P450IIE1 was detected only in duodenal and jejunal villous cells. After ethanol treatme

Morphometric analysis of suprabasal cells in oral white lesions.

Surgical specimens from the cheek mucosa of 73 patients with white lesions were studied to determine various morphometric parameters that would help differentiate between the various types of oral mucosal white lesions that carry a risk of malignant change. Four cell types were represented: traumatic keratosis, leucoplakia, candidal leucoplakia and lichen planus, in addition to a control group of normal mucosa. The shape and size of the epithelial cells in two cell compartments, parabasal and spinous, were investigated by an interactive image analysis system (IBAS-1). The results showed an inc

[The role of radiation therapy in treatment with preservation of shape and function in intraoral cancer].

The goal in treating intraoral cancer is to obtain tumor control with preservation of shape and function of oral cavity. For T1, T2 lesions of the tongue, the floor of the mouth and the cheek mucosa, interstitial radiation therapy provides a control rate of 80-90% with excellent preservation of function. With surgical salvage for persistent or recurrent tumor, the ultimate control rate is 90-95%. Unfortunately, for more advanced lesions surgery is frequently required to obtain local control. The use of bleomycin or peplomycin in simultaneous combination with external radiation therapy provides
