Multiple stable states-the coexistence of two or more distinct ecological configurations under identical environmental conditions-have attracted sustained interest in ecology, yet the field still lacks a unified framework connecting ecological mechanisms to dynamical models. Here, we review empirical and theoretical approaches to multiple stable states, synthesizing perspectives on stability, tipping, hysteresis and transient dynamics, and contextualize these within a common mathematical framework. Drawing on examples of well-known ecosystem models, we highlight the central and necessary role

A comprehensive understanding of life history is vital to successful species conservation and management. When different life history stages are accompanied by considerable morphological or cryptic variation, such as the egg and larval phases exhibited by most fishes, genomic tools are essential for identifying species so that early-life ecology questions can be studied. Genotyping-in-thousands by sequencing (GT-seq) has recently emerged as a targeted and efficient approach for species identification. We leveraged existing genomic and transcriptomic data to develop a GT-seq panel capable of di

Heavy metal contamination in crop fields is considered critical to food safety and human health. Therefore, we aimed to generate empirical evidence for the influence of soil and other environmental factors on heavy metal accumulation in crop fields. Estimates of heavy metal contents (iron, chromium, manganese, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, and lead) and calcium and magnesium over certified organic and chemical-fertilised vegetable fields in South India were compared at soil series levels. It revealed specific trends concerning the influence of soil type (soil order and soil series), agricultur

Habitat loss and fragmentation threaten biodiversity by reducing species richness and disrupting ecological interactions. But it is poorly understood how reduced habitat area and increased isolation impact community persistence, as measured by its capacity to maintain multispecies coexistence. We draw on an intensive, multi-year field study of mutualistic interactions in plant-frugivore and plant-pollinator networks across 41 islands in an insular fragmented landscape formed by dam construction in 1959. We show that the loss of island area after inundation is the primary driver that reduces th

PURPOSE: We investigated the effect of screen technology on visual evoked potentials (VEPs) by comparing a standard Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) screen with two Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) Light-Emitting Diode (LED) screens with differing levels of latency and high-frequency backlight flicker.
METHODS: All screens were calibrated to emit the same luminance and color composition. 19 young healthy subjects underwent VEP recording using checkerboard patterns with check widths of 0.26 degrees (º), 0.51º and 1.03º. Pattern Reversal VEPs (prVEPs) were recorded from occipital (O1, Oz, and O2) electrodes

Theileria annulata, an apicomplexan parasite, causes lymphoproliferative disease in cattle and threatens the bovine industry in tropical and subtropical regions. To clarify life-cycle mechanisms and parasite-host interactions, we conducted high-resolution Orbitrap proteomic and phosphoproteomic analyses of the schizont and piroplasm stages. In total, we confidently identified and quantified 2,093 proteins; among these, 459 proteins were observed in a phosphorylated state, comprising 5,069 distinct phosphorylation sites. Functional enrichment analysis of differentially abundant proteins indicat

The extensive use of herbicides in agricultural regions has raised increasing concerns regarding their occurrence, spatiotemporal distribution, and ecological risks in watershed systems. This study investigated the occurrence, spatiotemporal distribution, and aquatic ecological risks of 16 current-use herbicides in a representative subtropical agricultural watershed in South China. Soil, sediment, and surface water samples were collected monthly throughout 2024 in the Nala watershed, Fusui County, Guangxi, China, covering wet, dry, and transitional seasons. Herbicide residues were determined u

BACKGROUND: The well-being, health and nutrition of reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) and the practice of reindeer husbandry in Fennoscandia are strongly affected by climate change and the loss and fragmentation of pastures. Supplementary feeding has become increasingly common to cope with limited pasture availability, especially to avoid starvation during winters with ice-locked pastures and challenging snow conditions. Increased reliance on feeding shifts traditional reindeer husbandry towards a more farm-like system and raises concerns about changes in reindeer foraging behaviour, incre

Diet is an integral component of the welfare of captive animals. Previous studies have shown that diet can influence species growth and behavior. However, whether a variant diet provides enhanced benefits for captive animals, like the Trinidadian guppy, is not known. We fed aquarium juvenile guppies three different diets for 4 weeks and assessed growth rate and changes in boldness behavior between the start and end of the experiment. Diet type did not have an effect on either growth or boldness. We did find that guppies fed a variant diet exhibited more boldness at the end of the experiment co

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to establish and validate a rat model of patellofemoral osteoarthritis (PFOA) induced by patellar instability and to characterize its early degenerative features and compartment specificity.
METHODS: Twenty male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to four groups (n = 5 per group): a control group and PFOA model groups evaluated at 1, 2, and 3 weeks after surgery. PFOA was induced in the left knee by transecting the medial one-third of the patellar ligament and medial patellar retinaculum, after which the patella was gently displaced laterally. With the patella mainta

Mosquito-borne viruses, including dengue, Zika and chikungunya viruses, place a substantial burden on diagnostic services, especially where molecular laboratories are inaccessible or slow to return results. Point-of-care biosensors could reduce turnaround times and bring testing closer to patients in primary care, outbreak response, and field settings. This review critically examines nucleic acid amplification, CRISPR-assisted assays, lateral-flow platforms, microfluidic systems, electrochemical and optical biosensors, paper-based devices, and smartphone-enabled readouts. These technologies ar

BACKGROUND: Traditional diagnostic research increasingly uses digital imaging, physiological signals, omics, and machine learning. Technical performance alone, however, does not establish that a method is independently validated, reproducible, or ready for clinical data integration. This study quantified the translational safeguards reported in published human studies of digitized traditional diagnostic phenotypes and signals.
METHODS: We conducted a secondary cross-sectional content analysis of a predefined literature library assembled through a documented PubMed and Lens/Scopus search and s

Background: Maximal fat oxidation (MFO) is the highest rate of fat oxidation attained during incremental exercise, with cardiorespiratory fitness being its primary correlate. How body composition and regional anthropometry explain MFO variability remains poorly understood. While fat-free mass is a known correlate, regional morphology, such as skinfold-corrected girth, has been proposed to capture local muscle mass contributions. However, MFO is an absolute rate (g·min-1) whereas peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak, typically mL·kg-1·min-1) is conventionally reported relative to body mass. The statisti

Small-ruminant mastitis is a marginalized yet significant challenge with multifaceted impacts on dairy production, animal welfare, economic sustainability, and public health. Reliance on conventional antibiotics to tackle the disease raises concerns about antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and food safety, especially amid the globally rising demand for small-ruminant dairy products. Nevertheless, existing research on nonantibiotic alternatives for mastitis in sheep and goats remains poorly synthesized. To consolidate the emerging alternatives and evidence gaps, this review systematically identifie

OBJECTIVE: Current endovascular treatment of aortoiliac occlusive disease with kissing iliac stents has suboptimal long-term patency and durability secondary to pathologic flow fields. The aortoiliac fenestrated (AIFEN) stent was previously introduced to provide an anatomically preserving endovascular therapy that may improve flow dynamics compared with kissing iliac stents. The aim of this study was to compare flow dynamics between the AIFEN stent and conventional kissing iliac stents in vivo in an adult porcine model.
METHODS: AIFEN stents were manufactured via benchtop modification of stan

Foraging theory predicts that individuals adjust their behavior in response to environmental conditions and prey availability. One solution to finding and capturing unpredictable prey is social foraging, yet it remains unclear whether its benefits arise from behavioral coordination itself or simply from predators co-occurring under favorable environmental conditions. We examine how environmental conditions shape the outcome of social foraging between predators-dolphins and human fishers-that forage together on patchy, ephemeral migratory mullet schools. Using fisher catch as our empirical meas

Background/Objectives: This study presents a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method for the derivatization-free quantification of the three major short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)-acetate, propionate, and butyrate-in gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) fecal samples. SCFAs are key metabolites involved in intestinal physiology and are widely recognized as indicators of gut microbiota activity and host health across animal species. In aquaculture research, SCFA profiling can provide valuable insight into diet-microbiota interactions and gut functional status. Methods: The method was de

BACKGROUND: Intramuscular fat (IMF) is a key determinant of meat sensory quality, but the effects of rumen-protected betaine (RPB) on IMF deposition in Tibetan sheep remain unclear.
METHODS: Sixty male, 3-month-old Tibetan lambs (Initial weight 17.72 ± 1.36 kg) were randomly assigned to a control (basal diet, n = 30) or RPB supplementation (basal diet supplemented with 0.08% RPB, n = 30) for 90 d.
RESULTS: Transcriptomic and lipidomic analyses revealed that RPB modulated glycerophospholipid metabolism-related genes (DGKI and AGPAT1) and altered lipid profiles, including PC (16:0/20:5) and PC

This study evaluated changes in the active and resting behaviors of group-housed, newly weaned pigs challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). At weaning (∼21 days of age), pigs (n = 192; 5.73 ± 1.8 kg) were stratified by sex, litter, and body weight and randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments (16 pigs/pen; 4 pens/treatment): (i) saline-injected control (SAL); (ii) 50%-LPS, pens in which 8 of 16 pigs received LPS and 8 of 16 pigs received saline; or (iii) 100%-LPS, pens in which all pigs received LPS. Following a 9-d acclimation period, assigned injections were administered on study day 10. Pigs

As anthropogenic activities continue to expand globally, large-scale livestock encroachment into wildlife habitats increasingly threatens ecological balance, particularly by altering species interactions. Millions of wild ungulates now share plant resources with domestic grazers, facing dual pressures from interference competition and nutritional stress due to declining forage quality. Although extensive research has documented potential competition between sympatric wild and domestic ungulates, a comprehensive quantitative synthesis of the magnitude and drivers of these interactions remains l
