Climatic stratifications, in particular differences in temperature, occur along altitudinal clines. Understanding divergence across these regions can give insight into speciation and diversification, as well as how species may respond to climate change scenarios. Most past research has focused on temperate regions, yet year-round stable temperatures in the tropics make altitudinal temperature variation more pronounced and increase the likelihood of local adaptation across relatively narrow gradients. Here we investigate how genetics and the environment influence a wide range of traits in two w

Cellular plasticity is a central feature of malignant progression, allowing tumour cells to change identity during tumour evolution, therapeutic adaptation, and metastatic dissemination. This issue is especially acute in lung cancer, where the respiratory epithelium is intrinsically permissive to cell-state change. Genetic lesions, chromatin regulation, and metabolic adaptation are often framed as parallel determinants of lineage plasticity. Emerging evidence instead points to functional coupling across these layers. Oncogenic alterations can weaken lineage fidelity and open alternative trajec

Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) technology has rapidly advanced in recent years, driving significant breakthroughs in developmental biology, cancer research, immunology, and other related fields. However, existing clustering methods still face performance bottlenecks when handling large-scale scRNA-seq data. To address this challenge, we propose a self-training clustering method for large-scale single-cell RNA-seq data, termed scLTF (Single-cell Louvain-Transformer Framework for Large-scale Clustering). This method first generates preliminary clusters using a fast Louvain algorithm and

Small diameter unmyelinated (group IV) and myelinated (group III) muscle afferents transmit action potentials to signal muscle pain and the exercise pressor reflex (EPR). The EPR helps to drive the cardiovascular response to exercise. µ- (µOR), δ- (δOR), and κ- (κOR) opioid receptors (OR) have been shown to be expressed by dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons, but only peripheral µOR activation has been shown to inhibit the EPR mediated by group IV afferents. To determine if this results from differential OR expression, we identified group IV neurons in DRG and axons in gastrocnemius muscles from

The increasing demand for protein sources in pet nutrition has driven growing interest in microbial proteins (MP) as viable alternatives to traditional animal proteins. However, their successful incorporation into pet food formulations depends not only on nutritional adequacy but also on short-term food preference. This study evaluated the palatability of dry extruded diets containing 10% microbial protein in dogs and cats using an in-home two-bowl preference test and complemented these findings with independent laboratory characterization to support interpretation of the observed preferences.

Transposable elements (TEs) are key contributors to genome evolution, yet their macroevolutionary roles in adaptive radiations remain poorly understood, as high-quality genomic resources at sufficient phylogenetic breadth and appropriate comparative methods have been lacking. Here, we analyze 163 genomes spanning 12 of 16 extant ant subfamilies to characterize TE impacts over the past 100 million years. We identify convergent TE acquisition bursts in ancestors of the most speciose ant clades, preceding rapid diversification following the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event approximately 66 m

A quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR)-based method was established and validated for the detection of residual host DNA in recombinant human C1 esterase inhibitor (rhC1INH), a biopharmaceutical produced in the mammary glands of transgenic rabbits. DNA was extracted from rhC1INH samples using a sodium iodide-based extraction kit, and a TaqMan qPCR assay targeting the rabbit-specific L1Oc gene was optimized to evaluate its specificity, linearity, limit of quantification (LOQ), accuracy, precision, and robustness. The method exhibited high species specificity, with no cross-re

Heat stress (HS) is a growing challenge in poultry farming, driven by rising temperatures, which alters the gut and its microbiota. It is also assumed that body weight might be strongly correlated with a bird's ability to tolerate HS. However, there is no clear evidence of the potential interaction between HS exposure, body weight, and their effects on the host's microbiota in the short term. Hence, this study evaluated the effects of acute HS on the cecal bacterial community in chickens, relative to host body weight, and explored potential links between the microbiota and HS resistance. While live poultry transport remains a major sector of animal transportation within the European Union, transport-related welfare in geese has received comparatively little scientific attention. Germany was the third largest goose producer in the EU, but the continuing decline in poultry slaughterhouse numbers increases transport distances. The aim of this study was to investigate the relevance of transport distance and thermal conditions on Dead-on-Arrival rates (DOA) in slaughter geese from organic and conventional production systems transported in Germany. Data from 2009 to 2025 including 1

Chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA), an endogenous agonist of the farnesoid X receptor, is involved in lipid homeostasis and intestinal barrier regulation. This study examined how dietary CDCA alleviates high-energy diet (HED)-induced metabolic disorders in Wenchang chickens and determined the optimal supplemental dose. A total of 525 Wenchang hens were randomly assigned to five groups: Con (basal diet), HED, and HED supplemented with 50, 100, or 200 mg/kg CDCA (≥ 98% purity). The experiment spanned 42 days. Compared with the control group, HED significantly increased abdominal fat percentage, serum

BACKGROUND: Menopause, modeled by ovariectomy (OVX) in rodents, causes cognitive decline and emotional disturbances due to estrogen withdrawal. While probiotics and aerobic exercise independently show beneficial effects, their combined contribution remains poorly characterized. This study investigated whether concurrent administration of Lactobacillus plantarum and aerobic exercise alleviates cognitive and behavioral deficits in OVX rats.
METHODS: Fifty female Wistar rats (9-12 weeks old) were randomly allocated into five groups (n=10/group): Sham, OVX+PBS, OVX+Exercise (Exe), OVX+L. plantaru

The BCR®sequential extraction process (SEP) is widely applied to assess the heavy metals (HMs) fractions, i.e. F1 (exchangeable/acid‑soluble), F2 (reducible), F3 (oxidizable) and F4 (residual), in diverse biomass and their biochars. However, no study has systematically investigated how readsorption and redistribution during BCR®SEP affect the interpretation of HMs speciation evolution from biomass to biochar. In this study, the standard addition method, which was performed by spiking samples with no greater than 100% of the natural HMs content in each step of BCR®SEP, was applied to quantify r

Animals with a slender body such as eels progress by propagating body waves; this swimming mode is called anguilliform. Though anguilliform swimming has been studied extensively, its optimality and gait selection principles remain unknown. Here, through model-based optimal gait analysis, we propose that three dimensionless characteristic parameters -- the stride length, muscle mechanical efficiency and environmental force anisotropy -- shape the gait, and they respectively determine a whole or a fraction of body undulation, a more C-shaped or S-shaped body wave, and the overall body undulation

Marine protected areas (MPAs) conserve marine biodiversity, but their effectiveness depends on implementation. This study assessed the Racha Islands MPA, established in 2023 in a tourism-dependent coral-reef setting in Phuket, Thailand. Using the International Union for Conservation of Nature-World Commission on Protected Areas (IUCN-WCPA) management effectiveness framework, the study compiled evidence from May through October 2025, drawing on document analysis, available ecological monitoring information, stakeholder surveys and interviews and field observations and site verification. Mycoviruses are widespread in fungi, their diversity across different taxonomic ranks remains insufficiently documented. In this study, a novel mycovirus from the strain 8-Q-36 of binucleate Rhizoctonia AG-Bb, were identified using High- throughput sequencing technology and it was tentatively named as Orthocurvulavirus rhizoctonia 1. The viral genome consists of two dsRNA components, 2252 and 1720 nt in length. DsRNA1 contains a open reading frame (ORF) encoding a 80.3-kDa RdRp and dsRNA2 contains a ORF encoding a 54.3-kDa hypothetical protein. The encoded RdRp exhibited the highest sequence s

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), despite its much low PM2.5 levels, has limited access to clean household energies. However, residential emission contributions to ambient PM2.5 are insufficiently quantified owing to scarce regionally representative household energy data and complex influences of local emissions and regional transport. In this study, we updated the residential emission inventory from 1960 to 2019 for the QTP based on survey-based household energy consumption data, and adopted normalized marginal method to evaluate ambient PM2.5 source contributions with GEOS-Chem simulations. Livestock farming has become increasingly digitalised in large parts of the world. Sensor technologies can be used to mitigate emissions from farming in several ways, including improved efficiency of operations. The data that farmers collect to monitor and optimise their production offer a possibility to increase the accuracy of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission estimation if utilised fully. However, technologies developed for farm management may not meet requirements for monitoring of GHG emissions where high accuracy is required. The cost-benefit and reliability of farm-level data collection nee

With specialized piercing and sucking mouthparts, hard ticks (Ixodidae) are able to penetrate, anchor and suck blood from their vertebrate hosts. In the process, some species vector diseases that threaten human health and livestock. Historically, much work has been done to characterize their mouthpart anatomy primarily through dissections and histology. Advances in imaging techniques have led to more recent work exploring stages of the tick feeding process including salivation, suction, as well as penetration. However, a comprehensive overview of the internal and external anatomy of the mouthp
