Prolonged larval development in anurans: Assessing the independence of somatic growth and gonadal differentiation in Odontophrynus cordobae (Odontophrynidae).

Prolonged larval development in anurans provides an opportunity to examine how different developmental systems are temporally coordinated during ontogeny. In this study, we investigated larval development, somatic growth, and gonadal differentiation in the frog Odontophrynus cordobae under natural conditions. Field sampling throughout the annual reproductive period revealed the coexistence of two larval cohorts spanning a broad range of Gosner stages, indicating extended larval persistence and overwintering. Developmental sequences suggest that larval development may last between seven and nin

Locomotor kinematics and head stabilization in rolling snakes.

Morphology constrains the strategies available to organisms and their functional capacities. A striking example is the absence of wheels and the rarity of rolling locomotion across the animal kingdom1,2. Although rolling can confer high speed, it poses a fundamental mechanical challenge, as body rotation destabilizes the head and disrupts sensory-guided adjustment, particularly at high speeds. Here we report a behavioral solution to this problem: our video analyses show that dwarf reed snakes (Pseudorabdion) stabilize their head during dynamic rotational motion of the posterior body by using p

Navigation map has to be learned by migration-naïve Eurasian reed warblers.

It used to be thought that young migrating birds perform their first migration using an innate 'clock-and-compass' programme that specifies the timing of onset of movement and its direction and duration, but did not require information about the bird's current position1. In classic displacement experiments, young birds continued to fly in their normal migratory direction, whereas adults were able to adjust their course after displacement2. More recent evidence, however, suggests that young birds may estimate their position and adjust their behaviour when delayed or displaced, even during their

Depression: Ketamine quiets an unruly habenula.

Ketamine's robust antidepressant effects often appear twenty-four hours after a single dose. A new study now provides evidence suggesting that this timepoint coincides with a quieting of habenula activation and reductions in aversive learning in healthy subjects.

Neuroimmune signaling: Dopamine release from fat tissue mediates pathogen avoidance.

Animals must quickly learn to avoid food that makes them sick. A recent study in Drosophila melanogaster shows that ingesting pathogenic bacteria triggers dopamine release from fat cells that alters odor responses in the fly brain and switches feeding preference toward non-pathogenic food.

Chunking: What working memory gains and loses.

Chunking compresses information into fewer meaningful units, reducing working memory demands. During chunking, neural representations in the prefrontal cortex exhibit reduced dimensionality and are biased toward chunk centers, suggesting lossy compression that improves overall retention while reducing precision within chunks.

Bioturbation.

Bioturbation is an umbrella term for the biological reworking of soils and sediments by all kinds of organisms. It includes not only the impact of animals, but also that of rooting plants and trees. Although Charles Darwin's last scientific book On the Formation of Vegetable Mounds through the Action of Worms with Observations on their Habits (1881) already reported pioneering observations on the role of earthworms in particle displacement, soil formation and erosion-sedimentation processes, the term bioturbation was only introduced 70 years later to describe fossil biogenic structures in sedi

Trace fossils.

Ichnology (from the ancient Greek ichnos, a footprint or track) is the study of ichnofossils, or trace fossils. These are all the fossils that cannot be called 'body fossils' (skeletons, shells, preserved bodies and body parts). Trace fossils are typically tracks, trails or burrows, and they provide information on ancient environments and ancient behaviour. Ichnologists and palaeobiologists can identify whether a suite of trace fossils was produced in an ancient desert or on the deep abyssal ocean floor. Even more startling is that a trackway of dinosaur footprints can reveal the animal's spee

The evolution of oxygen, temperature, and marine aerobic habitat for animals over the last billion years of Earth history.

Atmospheric and ocean oxygen levels and temperature have changed considerably over Earth history, and many of these changes coincided with similarly dramatic changes in marine life. The synergistic interaction between oxygen availability and temperature sets aerobic capacities for marine animals, determining whether a given environment is habitable. Here, we explore the relationship between oxygen, temperature and aerobic habitability across the last billion years of Earth history using a metric known as the 'metabolic index' (Φ). Idealized scenarios for oxygen-temperature trajectories indicat

Birds shape biogeochemistry and ecosystem function globally.

Birds inhabit nearly every environment on Earth, shaping ecosystems through diverse functions that include contributions to biogeochemical cycles. By transporting and recycling nutrients, birds influence the availability and distribution of chemical elements that regulate key ecological processes. Yet, as bird populations decline, their biogeochemical roles remain poorly synthesized, limiting our understanding of the broader consequences of biodiversity loss. Here, we systematically review the role of birds in biogeochemistry, with consequences for ecosystem function, structure, and connectivi

Large animal restoration and carbon storage across climate-relevant timescales.

By virtue of their size and mobility, large animals can play important roles in Earth's carbon cycle. This has led to suggestions that restoring their populations can contribute to mitigating the climate crisis through removal and storage of atmospheric carbon. However, as animals can affect both release and sequestration of carbon, understanding when, where and how much they impact climate-relevant carbon is critical for evaluating their potential to become a trustworthy climate nature-based solution. Here, we review scientific evidence for the carbon impacts of elephants and great whales - t

Infectious African Swine Fever Virus in Spray-Dried Porcine Plasma Used as Feed Ingredient, South Korea, 2026.

We detected African swine fever virus DNA in feed and spray-dried porcine plasma (SDPP) used as a feed ingredient in South Korea. Pigs inoculated with SDPP developed fatal infection. An isolate phylogenetically clustered with South Korea strains. Our findings highlight the need for strengthened risk management of animal-derived feed ingredients like SDPP.

Corrigendum: Scaffold-free bioprinted osteogenic and chondrogenic systems to model osteochondral physiology (2019 Biomed. Mater. 14 065010.

Three-dimensional bioprinted culture platforms mimic the native microenvironment of tissues more accurately than two-dimensional cell cultures or animal models. Scaffold-free bioprinting eliminates many complications associated with traditional scaffold-dependent printing as well as provides better cell-to-cell interactions and long-term functionality. In this study, constructs were produced from bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) using a scaffold-free bioprinter. These constructs were cultured in either osteogenic, chondrogenic, a 50:50 mixture of osteogenic and chondrogenic

Toxicological Assessment of Phthalate Plasticizers in Hydra vulgaris: Acute Toxicity, Genotoxicity, Developmental and Behavioural Effects.

Phthalates pose significant risks to aquatic ecosystems, though their effects on nontarget organisms have been reported, with little information on Hydra. This study evaluated the developmental, cytotoxic and behavioural toxicity of four phthalates, dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) at concentrations ranging between 1 and 100 mg/L in Hydra vulgaris over 96 h. DBP induced acute toxicity and lethality with a 48 h LC50 of 5.3 mg/L. No mortality was observed for DEP, DMP and DEHP at this range of concentrations; however

A case of feline sparganosis caused by Spirometra asiana (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) discovered during left forelimb amputation.

A large plerocercoid was incidentally found and removed during left forelimb amputation performed to treat a refractory wound in a cat rescued in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan. Molecular analysis of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene identified the recovered worm as Spirometra asiana. This represents the first reported case of feline sparganosis caused by this species. Although the association between plerocercoid infection and the clinical signs remains unclear, outdoor cats may potentially harbor plerocercoids.

Systematic Review of Devices, Designs, and Trials for the Treatment of Deep Venous Reflux.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is driven primarily by venous reflux and affects nearly one-third of adults. While superficial reflux is effectively treated with ablation, therapeutic options for deep venous reflux (DVR) remain limited. Despite decades of innovation, no prosthetic or bioprosthetic venous valve has achieved U.S. regulatory approval. We systematically reviewed device strategies, clinical and hemodynamic outcomes, complications, and barriers to translation for devices designed to treat DVR. METHODS: We conducted a PROSPERO-registered systematic review (CRD420251101

LSD1 exerts crucial functions to drive the progression of meiotic prophase I during spermatogenesis.

Epigenetic modifications are critical determinants governing the proper initiation and progression of gametogenesis. Accumulating evidence has indicated that epigenetic dysregulation underlies the pathogenesis of infertility. However, detailed information on the individual powerful roles of these epigenetic enzymes in facilitating programmed meiosis remains elusive. This study indicates that lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1) plays critical roles during meiotic prophase I in mouse spermatogenesis. Germ cell-specific deletion of the Lsd1 gene in male mice caused meiotic arrest at the pachyten

From data to wisdom: A new era of scientific inquiry.

Rapid advances in high-throughput technologies and computational tools have ushered in a transformative era for scientific discovery. However, the acceleration of data generation has outpaced our conceptual frameworks for interpreting it. By examining current challenges in drug discovery, phenotypic screening, and model transferability, I argue that the future of scientific integrity depends on our ability to balance technical proficiency with the classical principles of hypothesis negation. Because the scientists who interpret data are themselves prone to bias and error, these safeguards must

Insulin regulates activity-dependent mitochondrial depolarization and calcium dynamics in dentate granule cells.

Systemic insulin resistance is associated with reduced hippocampal energy metabolism and cognitive impairment both in humans and animal models. However, whether insulin rapidly regulates neuronal metabolic stability during activity remains unclear. Here, we examined insulin signaling and queried the corresponding mitochondrial responses in dentate granule cells (DGCs) of adult female mice. This layer of excitatory neurons within the hippocampus plays an essential role in learning and memory. Insulin robustly increased Akt phosphorylation in dentate gyrus tissue when insulin degradation was inh

Identification of individual animals from position, orientation, and movement sequences in the Morris water task with machine learning: implications for spatial learning.

The Morris water task (MWT) has been the gold standard assessment of place learning and memory for over four decades, yet the processes that contribute to successful navigation are not completely understood. It is generally posited that rats learn to navigate directly to a place; however, navigation is not perfectly direct but contains variation in swim speed and trajectory, resulting in efficient, yet suboptimal paths. Recently, our lab demonstrated that path topography is quantitatively similar across trials within individual rats for a given start location, and dissimilar between rats and d
