PURPOSE: The retromolar canal (RMC) and foramen (RMF) are anatomic variants in the retromolar area of the mandible. The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between the RMC and RMF and related complications, and to reveal how the RMC could impact the mandibular anatomy using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and panoramic images (PAN).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: CBCT and PAN images of 50 patients were retrospectively analyzed to investigate the morphology of the RMC and RMF, and their impact on impacted third molar surgery and orthognathic surgery.
RESULTS: In PAN images, nei

Cutaneous and intraoral metastasis from any malignancy is not common. Cutaneous spread is usually noted in 5%-10% of high-grade malignancies, as in carcinoma breast, lung, colon, ovary, and malignant melanoma. Only 4.6% cases of cutaneous spread are from renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Intraoral spread from RCC is much rarer with an incidence of approximately 1% of all malignant oral tumors, noted sometimes in tongue, palate, buccal mucosa, gingiva, and lips. RCC is a highly aggressive tumor which requires early diagnosis for increasing the chance of cure. In our case, a 54-year-old male presented

Treatment of horizontally and deeply impacted mandibular molars is challenging for both orthodontists and oral surgeons because of the limited access and anchorage control. We report on two patients who had horizontally and mesially impacted mandibular second molars (MM2s). Both patients were treated by a surgical orthodontic approach, and the crowns of the impacted teeth were brought into the arches by closed forced eruption. Mesially impacted MM2s were uprighted with orthodontic microimplants, inserted in the retromolar area, and then moved into their ideal position. The first patient was in

INTRODUCTION: Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign salivary gland tumor, frequently affecting the major salivary glands but also the palatal or labial minor salivary glands. Pleomorphic adenomas affecting the retromolar trigone have seldom been reported with only few cases described in the literature.
OBSERVATION: We present the case of a young female patient who presented with this rare localization of pleomorphic adenoma and its subsequent management.
DISCUSSION: Pleomorphic adenoma of the retromolar trigone is a rare occurrence. Nevertheless, when faced with a swelling of th

Meningiomas are benign extraaxial tumors of the central nervous system (CNS). Extracranial meningiomas are extremely rare (2%) and can develop as a direct extension from a primary intracranial meningioma or as true primary extracranial meningioma originating from ectopic arachnoid cells. Only eight cases of primary meningioma in the jaw have been reported to date. Extracranial meningiomas are frequently misdiagnosed, resulting in inappropriate clinical management. The aim of this article was to describe the case of a man with an asymptomatic swelling in the right retromolar area over a period

BACKGROUND: Mandibular neurovascular canal contents may be vulnerable to damage during mandibular surgical procedures. Greater knowledge of the location and configuration of the mandibular canal can help in the safe performance of these procedures in the dental clinic. Cross-sectional CBCT imaging is a good modality for studying the course, location, configuration and accessory branches of the mandibular canal. The aim of this study was to observe the branching of the mandibular canal at different segments of the mandible and mandibular tooth groups.
METHODS: CBCT images of 116 mandibular hal

Cleft palate only (CPO) is one of the most common congenital malformations worldwide. The etiopathogenesis of CPO is not completely understood. Environmental factors, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, intake of drugs during pregnancy, advanced paternal age, have been demonstrated to be a risk of CPO, but conflicting results have also been published. Insufficient intake of folic acid during the pregnancy has been suggested to increase the risk for CPO. The demonstrated risk for siblings and the higher risk for monozygotic twins suggest a genetic etiopathogenesis for CPO. In some cases of CP

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common malignant tumour of the major and minor salivary glands. Minor salivary glands are scattered in different areas of the oral cavity such as palate, retromolar area, floor of the mouth, buccal mucosa, lips and tongue, but so far, only a few lingual MEC cases have been documented in the literature and most of the studies have shown a predilection for base and dorsum of the tongue. We report a rare case of MEC involving the posterior-lateral border of the tongue.

Among all neoplasms affecting head and neck region, salivary gland neoplasms are rare. Pleomorphic adenomas are the most common benign salivary gland tumours making up to 50% of major and minor salivary gland tumours. Intraorally pleomorphic adenoma is mostly found on palate and lips and very rarely in retromolar area. Here we are reporting a rare case of pleomorphic adenoma in right lower retromolar area in a 31-year-old female, the lesion was excised in toto with safety margins under local anaesthesia and postoperative follow up after six months didn't showed any recurrence.

The retromolar canal and foramen, an anatomical variation in the mandibular retromolar area, houses and transmits neurovascular elements that may innervate the mandibular third molar and associated tissues. These structures have been implicated in local anaesthetic failure, loss of sensation in the normal distribution of the buccal nerve, and local haemorrhage during surgery. Examination of 885 dry mandibles showed that 70 had a retromolar foramen (8%). There were no significant differences between groups according to age, sex, or ancestry. The mean (SD) distance from molar to retromolar foram

INTRODUCTION: This case report illustrates the use of a connective tissue (CT) graft harvested from a distal wedge procedure for root coverage. The retromolar area could be an alternative donor site, especially when a distal wedge procedure is planned. This approach offers an alternative CT donor site for the treatment of a localized gingival recession (GR).
CASE PRESENTATION: A healthy 22-year-old female patient presented with a localized Miller Class II GR defect on a mandibular incisor (tooth #25) caused by trauma from a lip piercing. Probing depths of 6 mm were also noted bilaterally over
