Cystadenoma is a rare benign salivary gland epithelial tumor that is characterized by intraluminal papillary projection. Majority of the tumors are located in minor salivary glands and usually occur in palatal and buccal mucosa, but rarely found in retromolar area. Clinically it is difficult to differentiate it from other minor salivary gland tumors, and diagnosis is chiefly based on characteristic clinical features and immunohistochemistry. We present a case of Cystadenoma arising from the minor salivary gland in retromolar area of a 44 year old female patient with a special emphasis on the i

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: As the demand for surgical procedure in the retromolar area of the mandible has been increasing, the identification of the retromolar foramen (RMF) and canal involving the retromolar triangle (RMT) has become an issue of clinical concern. We examined the shape of the RMT, incidence of the RMF, and intraosseous trajectory of the retromolar canal (RMC).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 118 sides of dry mandibles, 22 sides of mandibles of 13 cadavers, and cone-beam computed tomography (CT) images of 100 patients were examined. Micro-CT data of 13 cadavers were reconstructed

Solitary pigmented melanocytic intraoral lesions of the oral cavity are rare. Oral nevus is a congenital or acquired benign neoplasm. Oral compound nevus constitutes 5.9%-16.5% of all oral melanocytic nevi. The oral compound nevus is commonly seen on hard palate and buccal mucosa and rarely on other intraoral sites. The objective of this article is to present a rare case report of oral compound nevus in the retromolar pad region along with a review of literature. A 22 year old female reported with a solitary black pigmented papule at retromolar pad region which was surgically removed and micro

The aim of this study was to determine the pattern of bone remodeling after maxillary sinus lifting in humans by means of fractal dimension (FD) and histomorphometric analysis. Therefore, the correlation between FD and the histomorphometric findings was evaluated. Sixteen patients with posterior edentulous maxilla were enrolled in this study. Maxillary sinus lifting was performed using autogenous bone grafted from the mandibular retromolar area. Three direct digital panoramic radiographs were obtained: before surgery (Group 1), immediately postoperatively (Group 2) and after 6 months of healin

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common malignant, locally-invasive tumour of the salivary glands, and accounts for approximately 35% of all malignancies of the major and minor salivary gland. Minor salivary glands are scattered in different areas of the oral cavity such as palate, retromolar area, floor of the mouth, buccal mucosa, lips and tongue. MECs of tongue base are not common. We present a rare case of MEC localised at the tongue base in a 42-year-old Caucasian woman and discuss the histopathological types, management and review the literature. Adequate intra-oral excision wa

The objective of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of mandibular vertical defect reconstruction with autologous bone and the use of a sub-periosteal tunnel approach in preparation for dental implant insertion. Forty-three consecutive patients with an atrophic posterior mandible were reconstructed using this method. Two thin laminae of cortical bone, obtained by splitting blocks harvested from the retromolar area, were fixed in a box-like framework containing cancellous and particulate bone. The goal was to achieve an alveolar ridge width of ≥5.5mm and an effective bone height (EBH) of ≥1

The retromolar canal (RMC) is an anatomical variant of the mandibular canal. Apart from blood vessels it also contains accessory nerve fibers and is clinically important, because its presence can account for failures of mandibular block anesthesias and in rare cases, injuries of its neurovascular bundle can lead to complications such as hemorrhages and dysesthesias. The aim of this retrospective case study was to analyze the frequency and anatomy of the RMC using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in order to draw conclusions for the dental practice. A total of 680 CBCT scans comprising 1,34

Polymorphous low grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA) is a rare, low-grade malignancy of minor salivary glands accounting for 2% of salivary gland tumours. The most common sites are palate (60%), lip, buccal mucosa, alveolar ridge and base of the tongue with retromolar region being very rare (0.5%). It is considered to be a low grade malignancy with indolent nature. Very few cases with metastatic spread to lymph nodes and lung have been reported in literature. This report of PLGA is a rare case presenting in an uncommon location (retromolar area) with suspected lymph node and lung metastases.

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common tumor of the salivary glands. About 90% of these tumors occur in the parotid gland and 10% in the minor salivary glands. The most common sites of PA of the minor salivary glands are the palate, followed by lips and cheeks. Throat, floor of the mouth, tongue, tonsil, pharynx, retromolar area and nasal cavity are rarely involved. Here, we report a case of PA of the cheek in a 42-year-old female. The mass was excised and the patient was followed for 3 years post operatively with no recurrence.

Synovial sarcoma is a mesenchymal spindle cell tumor with variable epithelial differentiation. It is unrelated to the synovium as the name might suggest but arises in the soft tissues of the extremities around the knee joints and tendon sheaths. The tumor cells are thought to resemble normal synovial tissue histopathologically, hence named "synovial sarcoma" (SS). Head and neck lesions are less common and oral cavity involvement is extremely rare. Few cases in tongue, soft palate, mandible, buccal mucosa and floor of mouth have been described in the literature. Here, we probably report the fir

Oncocytic neoplasms comprise a group of rare tumors of salivary glands. Histologically, World Health Organization (WHO) (1991) classified them into three distinct types: Oncocytosis, oncocytoma and oncocytic carcinoma. Oncocytoma is also known by the more descriptive and less confusing terms of oxyphilic adenoma and oxyphilic granular cell adenoma. Oncocytoma is a rare benign salivary gland neoplasm composed of large epithelial cells with characteristic bright eosinophilic granular cytoplasm (oncocytic cells). It accounts for approximately 0.4-1% of all salivary gland neoplasms, occurring prim

Angiofibromas are rare, benign, locally invasive vascular tumors, which represent 0.05-0.5% of all head and neck tumors. Most frequent site of occurrence is the posterior nasopharynx, called as nasopharyngeal angiofibromas (NA), when these arise outside the nasopharyngeal region they are termed as extranasopharyngeal angiofibromas (ENA). Only 65 cases of ENA have been reported, and the most common site has been reported to be maxilla followed by ethmoids. Other unusual sites of occurrence reported so far in literature are nasal cavity, nasal septum, larynx, sphenoid sinus, pterygomaxillary fis

This study proposed to evaluate the mandibular biomechanics in the posterior dentition based on experimental and computational analyses. The analyses were performed on a model of human mandible, which was modeled by epoxy resin for photoelastic analysis and by computer-aided design for finite element analysis. To standardize the evaluation, specific areas were determined at the lateral surface of mandibular body. The photoelastic analysis was configured through a vertical load on the first upper molar and fixed support at the ramus of mandible. The same configuration was used in the computer s

The retromolar foramen (RMF) is a rare anatomical structure situated in the retromolar fossa behind the third molar tooth. When it is present, the foramen is connected with the mandibular canal and is believed to transmit neurovascular structures that provide accessory source to the mandibular molars and the buccal area. Reports from the literature show that the presence of RMF could pose a challenge in complete blockage of the inferior alveolar nerve during mandibular surgeries. We report the incidence of retromolar foramen from ninety-four dry mandibles of south-eastern part of Karnataka Sta

BACKGROUND: The global incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasing. Given the many complications associated with T2DM, effective management of the disease is crucial. Physical activity is considered to be a key component of T2DM management. However, people with T2DM are generally less physically active than individuals without T2DM and adherence to physical activity is often poor following completion of lifestyle interventions. As such, developing interventions that foster sustainable physical activity is of high priority. Electrically assisted bicycles (e-bikes) have been highl

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are defined as exposure to traumatic conditions from birth until age 18 years. Exposure to ACEs is associated with poor health outcomes and increased risks of chronic conditions such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and cancer. Pregnant women who have experienced ACEs have increased rates of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress symptoms, substance abuse and suicidality. The high prevalence of ACEs justifies screening, early support and interventions. This Quality Improvement Project was an evaluation of an existing ACEs screening program i
