Patients' perspectives on dental implant and bone graft surgery: questionnaire-based interview survey.

PURPOSE: To assess up-to-date expectations and preferences of patients seeking dental implants. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred and fifty consecutive patients (66 male and 84 female interviewees) were asked to rank their concerns regarding implant therapy and answer a questionnaire on implant and bone graft surgery, cost and time considerations and second-opinion behaviour. RESULTS: Treatment predictability and avoidance of removable dentures were ranked high priority (compared with time and cost efficiency or avoidance of bone grafts). Patients' estimation of the 10-year implant success r

A case report of a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the oral cavity in neurofibromatosis type 1.

Patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 develop both benign and malignant tumors at an increased frequency. Most of the malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are considered as high-grade sarcomas originating from tissues of mesenchymal origin. It is generally accepted that MPNSTs occur in about 2% to 5% of neurofibromatosis patients. In this paper, we present a 16-year-old male patient with neurofibromatosis who developed MPNST of the retromolar area. The mass enlarged rapidly in a period of 6 weeks. The patient was treated surgically, and a tumor mass with a diameter of 7 × 6 × 4 c

Clear cell calcifying epithelial odontogenic (Pindborg) tumor involving the maxillary sinus: A case report and review of literature.

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a rare benign odontogenic neoplasm of the jaws, accounting for less than 3% of all odontogenic tumors. It rarely extends into the maxillary sinus. Till date, six cases involving maxillary sinus have been reported. In this paper, we report the seventh case of a 52-year-old male with CEOT in maxilla extending from distal surface of the right maxillary canine to retromolar area and involving maxillary sinus with no association with impacted teeth. The diagnosis was confirmed by aspiration cytology and histologically, the tumor was composed of shee

Traumatic pseudo-lipoma in 3-year-old child.

The buccal fat pad is relatively large and prominent in neonates, infants and young children. The main function of this fat pad is considered as a cushioning tissue and sucking pad. A minor tear of buccal mucosa and buccinator muscle can result in herniation of large volume of fat into oral cavity that is termed as "pseudolipoma." The young children tend to be very playful while brushing their teeth. Improper brushing technique resulted in severe trauma to the buccal fat, including soft-tissue between buccinator and retromolar area. This article presents a case-report of a female child who dev

Assessment of the functionality of the pectoralis major myocutaneous flap skin paddle.

INTRODUCTION: The pectoralis major myocutaneous flap (PMMF) is commonly used for oral cavity reconstruction, yet its impact on function (intelligible speech, swallowing, mastication, tongue mobility, oral competence, and mouth opening) has rarely been studied or reported in the literature. PURPOSE: This study assessed the long-term functional outcome of oral cavity reconstruction with PMMF, placing particular emphasis in its correlation with size of the skin paddle and volume of the flap. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-five patients who underwent reconstruction of compound defects of the oral

Area extent anaesthesia from buccal nerve block.

This study investigated the extent of complete anaesthesia from buccal nerve block. 40 healthy Thai patients (20 males; 20 females) requiring buccal nerve block for surgery were studied. After the buccal nerve was blocked, the buccal mucosa was explored using a sharp probe to map out the extent of anaesthesia. The operation was carried out after inferior alveolar and lingual nerve block. The extent of the anaesthesia was mainly from the retromolar area to the second molar, followed by the first molar to the second premolar, whilst the first premolar to the central incisor was the area least af

The mandibular retromolar area as a donor site in maxillofacial bone grafting: surgical notes.

Bone harvesting from the mandibular retromolar area represents an attractive approach to obtaining corticocancellous bone blocks for reconstruction of a deficient alveolar ridge. Knowledge of the local anatomy, adherence to proper surgical techniques, and judicious use of appropriate surgical armamentarium are paramount to minimizing operative hazards. The objective of this article is to review pertinent surgical notes related to the safe harvesting of corticocancellous bone blocks from the retromolar area using a trephine bur technique.

Radiographic study of the mandibular retromolar canal: an anatomic structure with clinical importance.

INTRODUCTION: The retromolar canal is an anatomic structure of the mandible with clinical importance. This canal branches off from the mandibular canal behind the third molar and travels to the retromolar foramen in the retromolar fossa. The retromolar canal might conduct accessory innervation to the mandibular molars or contain an aberrant buccal nerve. METHODS: Patients referred for panoramic radiography were consecutively enrolled, provided a limited cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan had also been taken in the area of interest. Radiographs were retrospectively screened for the pres

Oral and neck examination for early detection of oral cancer--a practical guide.

Cancer of the head and neck region presents a challenge since, unlike other areas of the body, the boundaries are not always easy to delineate. The functional morbidity associated with head and neck cancer and its treatment are considerable. Head and neck cancer is described as cancer of the lip, mouth, tongue, tonsil, pharynx (unspecified), salivary gland, hypopharynx, larynx and other. Oral cancer refers to cancers of the lip, tongue, gingivae, floor of the mouth, palate (hard and soft), maxilla, vestibule and retromolar area up to the anterior pillar of the fauces (tonsil). When patients pr
