Molar uprighting with mini screws: comparison among different systems and relative biomechanical analysis.

Starting from a segmented approach, the Authors propose 3 different methods of using mini screws during the process of molar uprighting. The first UPG is performed by placing a mini screw in the retromolar area and by applying an elastic chain loaded between the screw and the molar. The second UPG is made by placing a screw in the retro molar area and by using a small cantilever which is active during intrusion and uprighting. The third UPG is made by using a miniscrew placed a few millimeters mesial to the molar to control the vertical force produced by the uprighting with a long cantilever to

[Comparison of postoperative complications following bone harvesting from two different donor sites for autologous bone replacement (hip bone and proximal epiphysis of the tibia)].

Whereas autologous bone replacement was earlier applied in maxillofacial surgery virtually only for the restoration of mandibular defects and for the osteoplasty of patients with cleft alveolar process, the free transplantation of autologous bone (spongiosa or cortical bone or both) is nowadays primarily used for implantation purposes. Autologous bone is still the gold standard for bone replacement. This is the case even though a wide selection of bone substitutes is currently available, with which new bone equivalent to autologous bone can be produced in certain cases. Autologous bone is ofte

Myoepithelial carcinoma of the retromolar area in a young female. A rare case report.

We present a case of a 34-year-old woman with myoepithelial carcinoma of the retromolar area. Myoepithilial carcinoma is a rare tumor of small salivary glands most usually located in the parotid gland. The major differential diagnosis of myoepithelioma is from pleomorphic adenoma. Little is known about the clinical and biological behavior and the prognosis of myoepithelial carcinoma and there is no consensus for its treatment. It is considered a low-grade malignancy; it sometimes shows aggressive behavior and may locally recur. Our patient was treated successfully with wide-local resection and

Juvenile pleomorphic adenoma of the cheek: a case report and review of literature.

Pleomorphic adenoma, also called benign mixed tumor, is the most common tumor of the salivary glands. About 90% of these tumors occur in the parotid gland and 10% in the minor salivary glands. The most common sites of pleomorphic adenoma of the minor salivary glands are the palates followed by lips and cheeks. Other rare sites include the throat, floor of the mouth, tongue, tonsil, pharynx, retromolar area and nasal cavity. In children, intraoral pleomorphic adenomas of the cheek are extremely rare with only three cases reported to date. Here we report a case of pleomorphic adenoma of minor sa

Benign alveolar ridge keratosis (oral lichen simplex chronicus): A distinct clinicopathologic entity.

Benign alveolar ridge keratosis is a common benign white papule or plaque that occurs on the keratinized gingiva of the maxillary or mandibular alveolar ridge that is probably traumatic/frictional in origin, with characteristic histologic features, similar to those of lichen simplex chronicus of the skin. This is a retrospective study of 108 consecutive specimens displaying characteristic histopathologic features of benign alveolar ridge keratosis accessioned during a 36-month period. There was a male:female ratio of 3.7:1. It occurred on the attached gingiva, with the retromolar area and the

Density of the alveolar and basal bones of the maxilla and the mandible.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this investigation was to quantitatively evaluate density of the alveolar and basal bones of the maxilla and the mandible. METHODS: Sixty-three sets of computed tomographic (CT) images were selected, and bone density was measured with V-Works imaging software (Cybermed, Seoul, Korea). The sample consisted of 23 men (ages, 29 +/- 10.9 years) and 40 women (ages, 25.6 +/- 7.6 years). Cortical and cancellous bone densities at the alveolar and basal bones at the incisor, canine, premolar, molar, and maxillary tuberosity/retromolar areas were measured. RESULTS: The cor

Adult patient with mandibular protrusion and unstable occlusion treated with titanium screw anchorage.

Orthodontic treatment for adults can be difficult because they often have several problems, including some associated with aging. This article reports the successful use of miniscrews to treat a 51-year-old woman with Class III malocclusion, unstable occlusion, periodontal disease, and temporomandibular disorder. The patient had a skeletal Class III jaw-base relationship, anterior and unilateral posterior crossbites, and a deviated midline. It was therefore necessary to confirm her mandibular position with a stabilization splint. Miniscrews were implanted in the retromolar area and used to mov

Epidemiology of oral Kaposi's sarcoma in Zimbabwe 1988-1997: a population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest number of HIV/AIDS cases globally which contrasts with the lack of population-based studies of oral Kaposi's sarcoma (OKS); one of the clinical cardinal signs of HIV/AIDS. To date, no study has investigated the incidence of OKS in African populations affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. It is, therefore, the purpose of this study to assess the burden of OKS in the Zimbabwean population over a 10 year period. DESIGN: A descriptive epidemiological study was undertaken to assess the burden of OKS by determining the frequencies, incidence and cumulative

Unusual extraction treatment of Class I bialveolar protrusion using microimplant anchorage.

This case report describes the treatment of a 16-year-old girl who had severe bialveolar protrusion. Patients with bialveolar protrusion are commonly treated with four first premolar extractions and retraction of the anterior teeth. Unfortunately in this patient, the mandibular left second molar had to be extracted because of extensive caries. To create sufficient space for retraction of the anterior teeth, the mandibular left posterior teeth were retracted with the mandibular posterior microimplant (1.2 mm in diameter, 6 mm long) placed into the retromolar area followed by en masse retraction

Retromolar ridge in edentulous patients: clinical considerations.

PURPOSE: A removable denture base should cover the mandibular retromolar regions to provide proper basal seal and denture function in edentulous patients. The bony residual ridge form, attached muscles, and covering mucosa provide support, stability, and retention of the planned prosthesis. There is insufficient information regarding bone anatomy, mucosal tissues, and muscles in the retromolar region after tooth loss. The purpose of this study was to examine the tissue morphology in the mandibular retromolar area of edentulous subjects and report on the clinical inferences in prosthetic and im

[Atrophic ridge augmentation using intra-oral onlay bone grafts--expanding the limits].

Placement of an endosseous implant requires sufficient bone volume for complete bone coverage. There is a growing use of intraoral block bone grafts from intraoral sources. The use of bone from the mandibular symphysis, retromolar area, mandibular ramus, and the maxillary tuberosity can serve as a good treatment alternative for alveolar ridge augmentation with a high success rate for long span augmentation, up to complete jaw augmentation or extensive bone reconstruction. The intraoral block bone graft procedure can be combined with other surgical procedures, such as sinus lift elevation or na

Synthetic, pure-phase beta-tricalcium phosphate ceramic granules (Cerasorb) for bone regeneration in the reconstructive surgery of the jaws.

The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term effect of the ceramic beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) at different sites of alveolar reconstruction and to evaluate its properties. From 1997 to 2002, beta-TCP was implanted as bone substitute in 152 patients using a standardized study protocol. Main indications were the filling of large mandibular cysts (n=52), secondary and tertiary alveolar cleft grafting (n=38), periodontal defects (n=24) and maxillary sinus floor augmentation (n=16). For defects exceeding 2cm in diameter, beta-TCP was combined with autologous bone taken from the

Clinical and anatomical study of retromolar foramen and canal.

PURPOSE: The retromolar canal is a rare anatomic variation of the mandible. The neurovascular content of the mandibular retromolar canal is very important for surgical procedures involving the retromolar area and there has been a lack of information on this subject. This study consists of anatomic research of the retromolar foramen and canal, planned after an impacted third molar tooth extraction operation in which we encountered a retromolar neurovascular bundle. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty sides of 40 mandibles were evaluated and the presence of the retromolar foramen and its relation to
