Side Impact Regulatory Trends, Crash Environment and Injury Risk in the USA.

Light duty vehicles in the US are designed to meet and exceed regulatory standards, self-imposed industry agreements and safety rating tests conducted by NHTSA and IIHS. The evolution of side impact regulation in the US from 1973 to 2015 is discussed in the paper along with two key industry agreements in 2003 affecting design of restraint systems and structures for side impact protection. A combination of all the above influences shows that vehicles in the US are being designed to more demanding and comprehensive requirements than in any other region of the world. The crash environment in the

The road most travelled: the geographic distribution of road traffic injuries in England.

BACKGROUND: Both road safety campaigns and epidemiological research into social differences in road traffic injury risk often assume that road traffic injuries occur close to home. While previous work has examined distance from home to site of collision for child pedestrians in local areas, less is known about the geographic distribution of road traffic injuries from other modes. This study explores the distribution of the distance between home residence and collision site (crash distance) by mode of transport, geographic area, and social characteristics in England. METHODS: Using 10 years of

Injuries caused by brake pedal loading of the midfoot.

In a frontal car crash, the driver’s foot and ankle may be injured due to loading by the brake pedal. The driver of a vehicle often has time to initiate emergency braking before an impending collision, which places the forefoot or midfoot over the brake pedal. During the crash, the pedal may induce dorsiflexion and axial loading of the ankle due to forward motion of the occupant and rearward intrusion of the pedal relative to the vehicle. In order to investigate the injuries caused by pedal loading, impact tests were conducted on three cadaveric lower limbs. The limbs were braced at the knee,

A field evaluation of real-life motor vehicle accidents: presence of unrestrained objects and their association with distribution and severity of patient injuries.

Moving objects may pose an added threat to car occupants in motor vehicle accidents (MVAs). However, to our knowledge, there have only been two case studies published on the subject. For the present study, accident reports and photo documentation from MVAs were collected on-scene by dedicated paramedics. Emergency medical service personnel on-scene were interviewed as necessary. Potentially harmful unrestrained objects in the involved motor vehicles (MVs) were identified and categorised by type, weight and hardness. Seatback offset by unrestrained objects was noted. The patient injury distribu

All-terrain vehicle fatalities--West Virginia, 1999-2006.

An all-terrain vehicle (ATV) is a motorized vehicle designed for off-road use with low-pressure tires, a seat that is straddled by the operator, and handlebars for steering. Currently, only four-wheeled models are produced in the United States; production of three-wheeled ATVs ended in 1987 because of safety concerns. During the 1990s, West Virginia led the United States in per capita deaths from ATV crashes, with rates approximately eight times higher than the national average. In an attempt to curtail this trend, West Virginia enacted legislation in 2004 to regulate ATV use. This law prohibi

Under-reporting of motor vehicle traffic crash victims in New Zealand.

Our aim was to ascertain the extent of under-reporting of seriously injured motor vehicle traffic crash victims, as recorded by police in New Zealand, and to what extent this coverage was biased by crash, injury, demographic, and geographic factors. Hospital data and police records were linked using probabilistic methods. During 1995, less than two-thirds of all hospitalised vehicle occupant traffic crash victims were recorded by the police. Reporting rates varied significantly by age, injury severity, length of stay in hospital, month of crash, number of vehicles involved, whether or not a co

Impact modelling studies for a three-wheeled scooter taxi.

Three-wheeled scooter taxis (TSTs) are being used in many Asian countries and along with buses are the main mode of public transport for the urban middle class population. The TST chassis is made by the manufacturer and the body is fabricated by local body-makers. The vehicle is not subject to any crash safety specifications. This work is the first attempt to study the crash characteristics of TSTs using a crash simulation computer software (MADYMO) with the objective of developing practical guidelines to make the vehicle safer in collisions with other motorized road users and pedestrians. Neck injuries among belted and unbelted occupants of the front seat of cars.

This article, part of a recently completed research project on safety belts, presents results on neck injuries. A total of 3927 injured front-seat occupants (drivers and passengers) involved in two-car crashes were studied. Among them, 725 sustained neck sprains (ICD-9 code 847.0); some of them may have sustained other injuries as well. The more serious injuries to the cervical spine were more prevalent among the unbelted occupants. Neck sprains were relatively more numerous among belted occupants compared with unbelted ones, with a relative risk estimate of 1.68. Similar results hold also for

Elderly in the traffic environment: analysis of fatal crashes in northern Sweden.

Fatal crashes of the elderly (> or = 60 years; N = 379) in northern Sweden in the traffic environment, between 1977 and 1986, were investigated using autopsy and police reports. Males had double the death rate of females. The car occupants made up the largest category (43%) followed by pedestrians, pedalcyclists, and two-wheel-motorvehicle (TWMV) riders, but the risk of fatal injury per unit distance travelled was highest for pedestrians and pedalcyclists. Most car occupants were killed in vehicle-vehicle crashes, mostly in the daylight and at intersections or straight roads. Ice and/or snow (

Accidents in the north. Some aspects on snowmobile accidents and moose-car collisions.

Snowmobile accidents and moose-car crashes are typical accidents in Northern Sweden. In this region there is about 1 snowmobile/10 inhabitants. The present paper combines previously published studies. The studies on snowmobile accidents are based on a material comprising all 61 fatally injured snowmobile drivers from the four northern counties of Sweden during the period 1973-1987. The helmet usage was analyzed in two clinical study populations including 200 injured from the county of Västerbotten from two periods 1979-1980 and 1985-86. Of the fatally injured (median age 32 years) 86% were dri
