Static CT imaging method based on multi-line array X-ray sources.

Static computed tomography (CT) is an advanced 3D measurement technology. It offers key instrumentation advantages by reducing motion-induced artifacts, preserving measurement accuracy, and lowering radiation doses- critical factors for precision systems. This capability is particularly crucial for imaging moving organs such as the heart. This study introduces a novel Multi-Array Stationary CT (MASCT) imaging architecture. Utilizing cold- cathode carbon nanotube X-ray sources, the proposed architecture achieves dual innovations in temporal and spatial resolution, advancing stationary CT instru

Selective capture and digital counting of intact HIV pseudovirus using designer DNA nets, tethered motion, and photonic resonator interferometric scattering microscopy.

Rapid and quantitatively accurate detection of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) viral load using a simple workflow, automated instrumentation, and real-time data processing with easily interpretable output is required for an approach to become practical for point-of-care environments. We recently demonstrated a form of interferometric scattering microscopy called Photonic Resonator Interferometric Scattering Microscopy (PRISM) that amplifies the contrast of surface-attached nano-objects via a photonic crystal (PC) surface. Recently, our team also developed net-shaped DNA nanostructures calle

Downchirp Echo From a Stationary Water Surface Wave Field Accompanying Whirligig Beetle (Gyrinidae).

To investigate the hypothesis that the whirligig beetle utilizes a water surface-wave analog of echolocation, we analyzed the stationary capillary-gravity wave field generated during its high-speed swimming (>23 cm/s) at the air-water interface. Our wave dynamics analysis reveals that as the beetle swims past a static object, the object broadcasts a reflected wave. When the object is in the path of beetle's swimming, a single frequency signal is generated. On the other hand, an object off the swimming path reflects a time-dependent frequency that pitches down, creating a distinct downchirp sig

Analyzing rear-end collision risks in foggy weather through a generalized extreme value model.

OBJECTIVES: Fog substantially impairs visibility and driver perception, leading to increased risk of crashes, especially rear-end collisions. Traditional crash-based safety studies are constrained by underreporting, low event frequency, and the inability to assess proactive risk under rare weather conditions. This study introduces a data-driven, proactive framework that integrates naturalistic vehicle trajectory data, anticipated collision time (ACT) as a surrogate safety measure, and extreme value theory (EVT) for estimating fog-related crash risks on multilane Indian highways. METHODS: Vehi

Time delay induced stochastic dynamics in a strongly nonlinear energy harvesting system.

Considering the unavoidable time delay effects and ubiquitous environmental noise in practical applications, along with the strong nonlinearity and multiple couplings inherent in actual systems, the resulting dynamical behavior becomes extremely complex, necessitating the development of new theoretical research methods. In this paper, a strongly nonlinear energy harvesting system with time delay is taken as the research object. To address the above difficulties, an extended stochastic averaging method is proposed to investigate the time delay induced stochastic dynamics of the system. The ener

Bioinspired ultrasound-driven ultrafast soft microgripper.

Understanding how acoustic waves interact with soft matter is critical for developing new strategies for dynamic control, actuation, sensors, and manipulation at small scales. A major challenge in soft matter and microrobotics is how to achieve fast, precise, and remotely controlled actuation at the microscale without sacrificing compliance or biocompatibility. Here, we introduce wireless artificial microcilia based on acoustically activated soft hydrogel microstructures inspired by Venus flytrap and vorticella. The structures, termed SonoGrippers, consist of dual microcilia (≤120 µm length) w

Ultra-quick dynamics and acrobatics of viscous marbles.

Non-wetting viscous drops are unusually quick compared to wetting ones, owing to the conjunction of non-wetting (which minimizes the contact with the substrate) and rotation (which minimizes the dissipation inside the liquid). Here, we report the existence of a threshold in driving force above which the speed of these objects increases about tenfold compared to previous models and experiments. We find that this effect is due to a dynamic reduction of the contact, that minimizes even more the interaction with the substrate but can also render the dynamics non-stationary - a consequence of the g

Rapid responses to reach errors are equally strong during fixation and visual pursuit.

When reaching to a foveated target, peripheral vision of the hand can be used to make rapid, automatic adjustments to the ongoing reach movement, with feedback gain being sensitive to features of the task and environment. These rapid corrective responses are also observed when gaze is directed to a stationary "gaze" target located away from the reach target. In everyday contexts, reaching often occurs concurrently with other visual or visuomotor tasks, such as tracking a moving target. Yet it remains unclear whether engaging in such tasks affects the use of peripheral vision for hand guidance.

Principles of Local and Global Grouping that Underlie Segmentation of Natural Texture Images.

The human visual system segments images using both high-level recognition mechanisms and low-level mechanisms that are largely independent of specific prior experience. The low-level mechanisms are essential for initiating recognition processes, and for learning to recognize new materials, objects, and contexts. Here we describe a hierarchical Bayesian observer (HBO) model of texture segmentation that is biologically plausible, takes into account the statistics of natural scenes, and does not depend on prior experience. The HBO model consists of five steps: local similarity grouping with local

Underwater Multi-Target Tracking and Behavioral Rhythm Analysis of Chinese Giant Salamander Based on TransTrack-OC-SORT.

To address the challenges posed by traditional tracking algorithms in adapting to complex underwater environments characterized by nonlinear motion, drastic morphological changes, mimicry camouflage, and frequent occlusions in wild Chinese giant salamanders, this study proposes a multi-object tracking and behavior analysis method based on the TransTrack-OC-SORT algorithm. The algorithm employs a dual-branch Transformer motion predictor to replace linear Kalman filtering, effectively capturing nonlinear motion patterns such as velocity changes and directional turns exhibited by salamanders. Reexamining the Relationship Between Stereopsis and Motion Parallax.

Depth perception depends on two powerful cues, stereopsis and motion parallax, that share similar geometric foundations but operate under distinct constraints. When observer motion is self-generated and the scene is stationary, the two can produce comparable depth percepts. However, disparity generally supports finer discrimination and more accurate depth magnitude percepts. Real-world depth perception from both cues is complicated by eye movements and matching ambiguity, but motion parallax faces additional challenges due to head movements and the presence of object and scene motion. Empirica

Toward Understanding Free-Flowing Manual Object Contact: Real-Time Interaction Between Body Position and Object Type in 9-Month-Olds.

Infants manually contact objects differently depending on their body position and the physical properties of objects. Previous studies have examined these factors separately, in structured laboratory settings, and laid the foundation for the investigation of the interaction of these elements. The current study revisits ideas from structured research in less controlled conditions by investigating how body position and the type of object shape manual contact with objects during free-flowing play. Nine-month-old infants (N = 80) participated in a semi-structured dyadic play session with their car

Early motor inequities: how birth conditions and social context shape motor development in the first five years of life.

This study investigated the influence of individual factors (gestational age, birth weight, and body length) and contextual factors (socioeconomic status, school attendance, and region of residence) on motor development in children aged 0 to 5 years. A total of 626 preterm and full-term children were assessed using the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-Second Edition (PDMS-2). Most children (77.8%) demonstrated average motor performance, while 17.7% scored below average. Full-term children showed higher total motor quotients and fine-motor grasping scores compared with preterm children, and c

Early detection of dead broilers in commercial farms using temporal persistence of stationary behavior.

Early detection of dead broilers is essential for maintaining productivity and biosecurity in commercial farms; however, dead broilers are difficult to distinguish from live broilers in deep resting states using single-frame images. This study aimed to develop and evaluate an early warning pipeline that detects dead broiler candidates by quantifying the temporal persistence of stationary behavior in broilers aged 1 to 10 days. Top-view CCTV videos were collected from a commercial farm housing approximately 30,000 broilers, and frames were sampled at a rate of 1 frame per minute. Broilers were

Information-Geometric Detection via Local SPD Structure Fields in the Time-Frequency Domain.

Non-stationary signal detection is challenging when discriminative information is not reflected in global energy, mean spectra, or a single covariance statistic, but is instead embedded in the organization of local time-frequency structures. This paper proposes an information-geometric detector defined on local symmetric positive definite (SPD) structure fields. Time-frequency patches are transformed into a spatially distributed field of second-order tensors to characterize local directional organization and anisotropy. Under a locally isotropic Riemannian Gaussian approximation on the SPD man

Distinct neural geometries for target position and velocity in the primate superior colliculus.

Moving targets pose a fundamental challenge for sensorimotor control: by the time a target's position is transformed into neural signals, the target has already moved. Primates compensate for this delay and accurately intercept objects by accounting for target velocity. However, the neural mechanisms by which sensorimotor structures represent target velocity remain poorly understood. Here we recorded spikes and local field potentials from the superior colliculus (SC) of male macaques viewing or directing saccades to stationary and moving targets and used time-resolved dimensionality reduction

A comprehensive dataset of Halyomorpha halys for automated detection and monitoring in orchards.

The Halyomorpha halys (HH) (Brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB)) is a globally invasive pest responsible for severe economic losses in fruit production, yet open, large-scale monitoring datasets remain scarce. Here we present a multi-year, multi-modal dataset acquired over three consecutive growing seasons in an experimental pear orchard in Carpi (Modena), Italy, designed to support research in entomology, agriculture, and Machine Learning (ML). The release comprises (i) three years of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-acquired RGB imagery annotated with bounding boxes for HH; (ii) one season of sta
