Motion sensitivity in central and peripheral vision.

The visual resolution of motion is important both for indicating the presence of moving objects and for assisting locomotion and spatial orientation. Additionally, motion may enhance the visibility of low contrast features of the environment. For patients with reduced central vision, these functions may be especially significant as the detection of motion is superior to the ability to resolve stationary detail in peripheral vision. The present paper analyzes the effects of specific stimulus variables on motion sensitivity in both central and peripheral vision. Implications of these findings fo

Genetic dissection of optomotor behavior in Drosophila melanogaster. Studies on wild-type and the mutant optomotor-blindH31.

In stationary flight Drosophila melanogaster produces yaw torque in response to visual movement stimuli. The residual optomotor yaw torque response of the mutant optomotor-blindH31 (omb), which lacks the horizontal (HS) and vertical (VS) giant fibers in the lobula plate, differs from that of wild-type in several aspects: it is restricted to the frontal visual field, it is only elicited by front-to-back motion and appears to be mediated by a different set of elementary movement detectors (EMDs). Using a single black stripe as motion stimulus the torque response is, even in wild-type flies, domi

Classification of the EEG during neurosurgery. Parametric identification and Kalman filtering compared.

A procedure is described which aims to classify an EEG recorded during neurosurgery, for example intracerebral aneurysm clipping. A parametric approach is used; it employs auto-regressive (AR) modelling and Kalman filtering to quantify directly the dynamics of the EEG generating mechanism, supposing it to be a linear, time-invariant system driven by white noise. The results of this EEG processing are analysed together with simultaneous values of arterial blood pressure (ABP) as surgery of this kind is carried out under conditions of controlled hypotension. The object is to compare the sensitiv

[Tracing eye movements in various types of stroboscopic stimulation].

Relationship between eye ability to perceive smooth motion under stroboscopic stimulation on forward motion (from which stationary positions of the object) in the plane perpendicular to the look line was found. For diagnostics and occupational selection it is suggested to carry out stimulation in several directions thus obtaining additional information about the visual system of the person under test.

Investigation of the visual cytoscreening of conventional gynecologic smears. II. Analysis of eye movement.

The perception of visual information in cytoscreening was studied: eye movements were recorded while the cytotechnologist was screening cervical smears by means of a projection screen. Four phases of eye movement could be distinguished: small, aimless movements during the stage movement; a latency period with a duration of about 180 milliseconds; saccadic movement to the position of an object; and fixation on an object. These components explain the two-phase behavior of cytoscreening found in our previous investigations of the stage movement. Visual perception during the period of latency was

Afterimage-like effects in the motion-sensitive neuron H1.

A powerful effect resembling an afterimage is demonstrated on the pathway to the motion-sensitive neuron H1. This effect is independent of the locally generated gain control described in an earlier paper (Maddess & Laughlin 1985, Proc. R. Soc. Lond. B 225, 251). The afterimage, produced across the eye by a stationary pattern, causes the sensitivity to movement to be different according to the local stimulus history, and the effects of low-contrast (0.1) patterns, presented for as little as a few hundred milliseconds, remain for up to 2 s. Moving patterns interact with the afterimage to modulat

Human ocular vergence movements induced by changing size and disparity.

Human subjects viewed an electronically generated bright square. Horizontal movements of the two eyes were recorded with the scleral coil method. The dynamic properties of vergence movements induced by movement of the bright square were investigated for the following three kinds of stimulus motion: (a) both the size and the binocular disparity of the square changed together, in such a way as to exactly mimic the retinal image changes produced by a real object's motion in depth; (b) the changing-size component in (a) was present with no disparity component; (c) the changing-disparity component

Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) studies in migraine and epilepsy.

Intracarotid injection of 133-Xenon and recording of wash out of radioactivity by 254 external stationary detectors was used to measure rCBF. Initial slope values were calculated by a computer, translated into color code and displayed on a TV-screen. rCBF in patients with epilepsy has been the object of former studies. Those who had a cortical focus showed corresponding high blood flow values during attack and during EEG paroxysms without clinical attacks. On the contrary, all other patients with a cortical focus were normal. Patients with complex partial seizures displayed no abnormalities in

Magnetic resonance microscopy of the rat thorax and abdomen.

With magnetic resonance (MR) microscopy, high-resolution volumetric imaging (3DFT) of small animals is possible. Although these techniques are suitable for imaging the head and other small stationary objects, breathing and cardiac motion degrade the quality of body images. Scan synchronous ventilation and cardiac gating methods have been developed that permit acquisition of high-resolution images from anywhere in the body of small animals (150 to 400 g). Anesthetized rats were ventilated in synchrony with three-dimensional Fourier spin warp (3DFT) sequence (TR = 400 to 1000 ms, TE = 20 ms). Ei

A revised analysis of the role of efference in motion perception.

The analysis of motion perception historically has included efferent as well as afferent mechanisms to account for the perception of motion during eye movement. The application of efferent mechanisms to motion perception has been limited, however, by several illusions which are apparently inconsistent with the notion that oculomotor mechanisms contribute to motion perception. An alternative account is presented of the manner in which efference may contribute to the perception of motion. It is proposed that distinct smooth eye-movement systems contribute differentially to object motion percepti

Mathematical analysis of the stimulus for the lateral line organ.

Behavioral studies have shown that a blind fish is capable of detecting and recognizing stationary objects in its surroundings. It is proposed that the displacement of water caused by the fish as it moves is the basis for this detection capability. Alterations in the displacement of water around the fish, caused by the obstacle, act as stimuli for the lateral line organ. The question of how these stimuli acting on the skin of the fish, image the environment and what information is thus made available to the fish is the concern of this paper. The stimuli for the lateral line organ are derived m

Induced motion and oculomotor capture.

Three experiments investigating the basis of induced motion are reported. The proposition that induced motion is based on the visual capture of eye-position information and is therefore a subject-relative, rather than object-relative, motion was explored in the first experiment. Observers made saccades to an invisible auditory stimulus following fixation on a stationary stimulus in which motion was induced. In the remaining two experiments, the question of whether perceived induced motion produces a straight ahead shift was explored. The critical eye movement was directed to apparent straight

Tactile localisation: the function of active antennal movements in the crayfish Cherax destructor.

Video recordings and single frame analysis were used to study the function of the second antennae of crayfish (Cherax destructor) as a sensory system in freely behaving animals. Walking crayfish move their antennae back and forth through horizontal angles of 100 degrees and more, relative to the body long axis. At rest, animals tend to hold their antennae at angular positions between 20 and 50 degrees. Movements of the two antennae are largely independent of each other. Before and during a turn of the body the ipsilateral antenna is moved into the direction of the turn. Solid objects are explo

Mechanisms of nystagmus.

The slow phases of nystagmus can be divided into four types based on their wave forms: linear, exponentially decaying, exponentially increasing, and sinusoidal. The former three give risk to "jerk" nystagmus; the last to "pendular" nystagmus. The drift of the eyes that creates the slow phase of nystagmus can be analyzed by considering the mechanisms that normally hold the eyes still so that images are stable upon the retina for best visual acuity. Thus, we have a vestibular-optokinetic system to keep images of stationary objects stable on the retina during head rotation; a pursuit system to ke

Dual-isotope motion correction technique for gated exercise scintigraphy.

In exercise multigated blood-pool imaging, significant degradation of image quality occurs as a result of patient movement under the gamma camera. Motion correction devices using centroid tracking of x-y events emanating from the organ of interest cannot be applied to blood-pool studies, because cardiac contraction and rotation masks the correctable patient motion component. We have developed a dual-isotope motion correction technique (DIMC) which utilizes a second point source of dissimilar energy (241Am) to monitor movement. Positional centroids from events incident in the 241Am window are u

Electronic simulation of cones, horizontal cells and bipolar cells of generalized vertebrate cone retina.

Electronic analogue of my theoretical model of generalized vertebrate cone retina [Siminoff: J. Theor. Biol. 86, 763 (1980)] is presented. Cone mosaic is simulated by 25 X 21 grid of phototransistors that have colored filters mounted in front of then to produce red-, green-, and blue-sensitive cones arranged in a "trichromatic" retina. Each retinal element is simulated by Summator-Integrator and unit gain voltage invertes are used to give correct polarities to output voltages. Dynamic properties of retinal elements are developed solely by temporal interplay of antagonistic input voltages with

[Mechanism of directional selectivity of neurons with complex receptive fields in the visual cortex of the cat].

Spatio-temporal interactions within complex receptive fields were investigated in the visual cortex of a cat by means of sequential presentation of two stationary stimuli. When two stimuli were presented in the phase (on-on or off-off) and sequential presentation corresponded to preferred movement direction, the response to second stimulus was enhanced (or less inhibited). When sequential presentation corresponded to opposite movement direction, the response was inhibited. Sequential presentation of two stimuli with opposite phase (on-off or off-on) in preferred direction inhibited the respons

The efficiency of the central and peripheral retina in driving human optokinetic nystagmus.

Previous experiments to decide whether the gain of optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) is increased or decreased by occlusion of the central retina involved the use of stationary edges on the occluder and unmatched contrasts. With these factors controlled, it was confirmed that OKN gain is severely reduced by occlusion of the central retina but only at stimulus velocities above about 30 degrees/sec. The gain of horizontal OKN was found not to increase with increasing width of the display if the lateral edges are blurred. The high gain of centrally driven OKN may be related to the ability of higher mam

Selective networks and recognition automata.

The results we have presented demonstrate that a network based on a selective principle can function in the absence of forced learning or an a priori program to give recognition, classification, generalization, and association. While Darwin II is not a model of any actual nervous system, it does set out to solve one of the same problems that evolution had to solve--the need to form categories in a bottom-up manner from information in the environment, without incorporating the assumptions of any particular observer. The key features of the model that make this possible are (1) Darwin II incorpo

Investigations using an X-ray image intensifier and a TV camera for imaging transverse sections in humans.

A method for computed tomography using equipment available on some radiotherapy simulators has been investigated. An offset narrow fan beam of X rays passes transversely through the object and is continuously detected by an image intensifier and TV camera system while the beam and detector complete a rotation about the object in 30 seconds. Several TV lines of the images obtained at equal angular increments are digitised and summed to produce transmission projections from which a transverse section is formed by filtered back-projection. The dynamic range required of the camera is reduced by mo
