A small object was gripped between the tips of the index finger and thumb and held stationary in space. Its weight and surface structure could be changed between consecutive lifting trials, without changing its visual appearance. The grip force and the vertical lifting force acting on the object, as well as the vertical position of the object were continuously recorded. We compared laser-Doppler velocimetry with plethysmographically determined changes in skin blood flow (SkBF) in five studies on four men. Increments in SkBF were induced by raising whole-body skin temperature to 39 degrees C for 50-70 min. We found laser-Doppler blood flow (LDF) to correlate well with total forearm blood flow (FBF) within each study (r = 0.94-0.98), but the relationship varied among studies. Current implementation of probabilistic relaxation labeling (PRL) is based on stationary compatibility coefficients (SCC's). Such labeling frequently diverges from an achieved minimum labeling error. In this correspondence it is shown that by having nonstationary compatibility coefficients (NSCC's) the PRL stabilizes about the minimum error which is obtained during the early iterations. Also, a noniterative labeling algorithm which uses NSCC and has a performance similar to that of the modified PRL is suggested.

Extracellular recordings were carried out in the primary visual cortex of behaving macaque monkeys. Neurons were activated by moving a visual stimulus across their receptive fields during steady fixation and by moving their receptive fields (by visual tracking) at the same velocity across a stationary visual stimulus. Illusory motion of the unseen stationary forearm can be elicited by vibration of the biceps brachii or triceps brachii muscle. We have studied in 12 individuals how sight of part of the arm alone or in relation to other objects affects such vibration-induced, illusory motion of the forearm. The increasing popularity of skiing as a recreational sport has resulted in a greater number of major thoracic and abdominal injuries. These injuries, unlike the more common orthopedic injuries, are often life threatening. This 8-year study reviews 44 thoracic and abdominal ski injuries managed at an urban trauma center since the inception of a helicopter air evacuation program with in-flight resuscitation capabilities.
