The precision of gaze. A review.

This paper reviews advances in our knowledge about the stability of the human being's line of sight while fixating objects stationary with respect to himself. Recent technological developments made it possible to measure gaze with a high degree of accuracy when the head was free of artificial support. Measurements made with the head free while the subject sat, as still as possible, show that gaze is half as stable as when the head is held rigidly. Precision deteriorates by an additional factor of five when the head is moved actively or passively within a range of natural physiological frequenc

[Receptive fields of lateral suprasylvian neurons in the cat].

The receptive field structure of single neurons in lateral suprasylvian area was investigated in cat. Receptive fields were of larger sizes comparing with visual cortex (up to 2000 sq. deg.). The dimensions of receptive fields measured by black objects and light spots revealed differences, the receptive fields being usually larger when black objects were used. The experiments showed that the visually sensitive neurons of the lateral suprasylvian area could be activated by stationary flashing light stimulus. The neurons were qualified in three groups as on, off and on-off. Distribution of the a

Sigma-movement and optokinetic nystagmus elicited by stroboscopically illuminated stereopatterns.

Sigma-movement is an apparent movement seen when a stationary periodic visual pattern of the period PS is illuminated stroboscopically at the flash frequency fS and smooth gaze pursuit eye movements are performed across the pattern at an angular velocity Ve = PS X fS deg X S-1. Sigma-movement leads to an optokinetic nystagmus (Sigma OKN) which in turn sustains Sigma-movement perception. (1) Sigma-movement was also seen in an apparent three-dimensional periodic stripe pattern generated by two periodic monocular stimulus patterns with a certain degree of horizontal binocular disparity. (2) Sigma

Determination of the vibrating phase by a time-averaged shadow moire method.

By the general time-averaged shadow moire method only amplitude distribution of an object vibration is recorded. In this paper determination by means of the time-averaged shadow moire method of the vibrating phase of an arbitrary position on the object is presented. In this method the illumination angle of the reference grating is periodically oscillated at the same frequency as the object vibration. Therefore, stationary contour fringes are shifted to a vibrating region that vibrates in-phase oscillation of the illumination angle. Accordingly it is possible to determine the vibration phase of

Properties of visually sensitive neurons in lateral suprasylvian area of the cat.

Functional properties of neurons in lateral suprasylvian area were investigated by single unit recordings in unanesthetized cats with the brain stem pretrigeminal transection. Majority of cells in the lateral suprasylvian area responded vigorously to moving visual stimuli. Many of them were responsive only to the movement of black objects, without any reaction to the light stimuli, 78 percent of the observed neurons revealed direction selective properties, the remainder being direction nonselective. Seventy eight percent of neurons revealed well defined responses to stationary flashes of light

Subspecies differences in curiosity and general activity for developing squirrel monkeys.

Curiosity and general activity characteristics in different squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) phenotypes were assessed. Ten infant squirrel monkeys, representing 2 subspecies (Bolivian and Colombian) and both genders, were observed on 4 testing sessions during which novel and familiar objects were presented to each subject. No consistent object-contact differences were found between subspecies or genders, but significant subspecies differences were found for the amount of time during each trial that the subjects climbed, remained stationary, vocalized, and showed abnormal behaviors. Familiar

Automatic analysis of moving images.

Cine film and videotape are used to record a variety of natural processes in biology, medicine, meteorology, etc. This paper describes a system which detects and tracks moving objects from these records to obtain meaningful measures of their movements, such as linear and angular velocities. Features of the system are as follows. 1) In order to detect moving objects that are usually blurred, temporal differences of gray values (differences between consecutive frames) are used to separate moving objects from stationary objects, in addition to spatial differences of gray values. 2) The results of

Velocity sensitivity of areas 17 and 18 of the cat.

Velocity sensitivity of areas 17 and 18 of the cat has been evaluated by preparing neuronal velocity-response (VR) curves in paralyzed and anaesthetized cats. VR curves suggest two possible mechanisms for neuronal coding of stimulus velocity as well as criterion for distinguishing between cells involved in analysis of stationary or moving objects. VR curves differ between cortical areas and with retinal eccentricity. Neurones with larger receptive fields (RFs) become, on the average, sensitive to faster velocities. Parallels with human psychophysics are pointed out as support of the suggestion

The behavior of the vestibulo-ocular reflex at high velocities of head rotation.

The behavior of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) during both passive and active, high-velocity head movements was recorded in three normal subjects. We found that the VOR is compensatory for head velocities up to at least 350 deg . s-1, during both active and passive head rotation provided there is an attempt to visualize a real (or imagined) stationary object in space. Slow phase velocities, however, could reach values as high as 500 deg . s-1. Furthermore, during passive rotation at high velocities, the quick phase trajectory is modified--indicating an interaction between the slow phase and

Two-wave mixing and energy transfer in Bi(12) SiO(20) crystals: application to image amplification and vibration analysis.

The energy transfer between two beams (signal and reference, respectively) writing a dynamic-volume hologram in photorefractive BSO crystals is applied to the image amplification of a diffuse object. The image intensity transmitted by the crystal is amplified 10x in the presence of the pump reference beam. The crystal is used in the drift recording mode (applied electric field, E(0) = 10 kV cm(-1); fringe spacing, Lambda = 3 microm), and beam coupling is induced by the nonlocal response of the crystal that is due to the fringe displacement at a constant speed. We have applied this two-wave mix

Neurons with complex visual properties in the superior colliculus of the macaque monkey.

Single neurons were recorded from the superficial layers of the superior colliculus of immobilized monkeys (Macaca mulatta and Macaca irus). Two main functional types of neurons were found. The neurons of the first type (Type I neurons) responded well to simple stationary and moving stimuli such as spots, bars or slits of light. The latency of their response was 41 +/- 6 ms. They were not directionally selective and responded to a large range of velocities. The neurons of the second type (Type II neurons) responded very poorly to simple visual stimuli and their activation required real objects

Egomotion and relative depth map from optical flow.

When an observer moves in a 3D world, optical flow fields are generated on his retina. We argue that such an observer can in principle compute the parameters of his egomotion, and following this, the relative depth map of the stationary environment solely from the instantaneous positional velocity fields (IPVF). Moreover, we argue that in the stationary world, this analysis can be done locally, and is not dependent on global properties of the optical flow under the imposed ocnstraints (smoothness of the egomotion path, rigidity of objects, temporal continuity of perception). To investigate the

Interactions between extraocular proprioceptive and visual signals in the superior colliculus of the cat.

1. The responses of units in the superficial layers of the superior colliculus to stretch of extrinsic ocular muscles (e.o.m.) and to visual stimuli, delivered singly and paired at various inter-stimulus intervals, were studied in chloralose-anaesthetized cats. 2. Most units responded to visual stimuli and about half also gave phasic excitatory responses to stretch of e.o.m. 3. Signals from the e.o.m. of each eye reach both superior colliculi; only those in the colliculus ipsilateral to the e.o.m. stretched were studied in detail. 4. A variety of control experiments provided evidence that the

Perception of relative velocity: a revision of the hypothesis of relational determination.

The conventional formulation of the hypothesis of relational determination asserts that the perceived relative velocities of two or more objects depend upon their relative rates of displacement with respect to stationary referents in the visual field. Experiment 1 showed that this formulation is too restrictive by demonstrating the transposition-of-velocity effect under conditions in which two light spots moved in the absence of static visible contours and traversed unequal path lengths. Experiment 2 showed that angular velocity per unit of relative angular extent, and not relative linear or p

A computational study of a period of infant object-concept development.

Piaget has distinguished a number of distinct stages in the development of the concept of an enduring external object during infancy. I present a theory of a class of behaviours at one of these stages embodied in a working computer program. The behaviour of this program matches a class of perceptual behaviours of infants between about twelve and twenty weeks of age in a number of experimental situations studied by Bower. The theory argues that these behaviours are a result of the interaction between the perceptual and conceptual levels of the system, and the way in which conflicts between comp

Body movements and retinal pattern displacements while approaching a stationary object in the walking fly, Calliphora erythrocephala.

When a walking fly approaches a stationary object two types of body movements are distinguishable. Type I body movements are characterized by low frequencies (0.4-1.3 Hz) and large amplitudes (28-65 degrees). Superimposed on these movements are type II body movements which are characterized by high frequencies (7.3-10.6 Hz) and small amplitudes (5.9-8.2 degrees) (Figs. 3-6; Table 1). Type II movements occur no matter whether the fly is fixating a pattern or orientating itself in homogeneous surroundings without any pattern. In contrast, only 72% of the flies with immobilized heads and 62% of t

Some effects of pretectum lesions on the frogs' detection of stationary objects.

Frogs with bilateral aspiration lesions of the caudal thalamus were unable to avoid collision with a vertically striped barrier that partly surrounded the animal. This striking deficit co-existed with normal visual guidance of feeding and avoidance of threat. In addition, all lesioned animals were unable to turn towards an aperture within black or white enclosures in order to escape noxious stimulation. Some residual detection of stationary edges remains, however, since most lesioned animals were able to avoid a small barrier placed before them. It is concluded that pretectal visual neurons pl

Visual aftereffects derived from inspection of orthogonally moving patterns.

Alternate inspection of patterns moving in orthogonal directions induces an aftereffect in which a stationary test pattern seems to move in a new direction. This direction is the resultant of the two directions of aftereffect that would have arisen from separately inspecting each of the moving patterns. The direction in which objects appear to move, like their color and depth, can thus depend on a synthesis of unperceived components.

The mechanism of physiological height vertigo. I. Theoretical approach and psychophysics.

A theory is presented supporting a geometrical explanation of physiological height vertigo as a 'distance vertigo' created by visual destabilization of posture when the distance between the observer and visible stationary contrasts becomes critically large. Though height vertigo is generally regarded as a psychopathological process, we hypothesize that it might instead result from an intersensory mismatch when visual information is at variance with vestibular and proprioceptive inputs. Psychophysical experiments confirming the hypothesis revealed that: 1) height vertigo is clearly related to b
