In order to validate the hypothesis that height vertigo is based on visual destabilization of free stance when the distance between eye and object becomes critically large, several of its consequences were demonstrated in posturographic experiments: (1) Visual signals conflicting with simultaneous vestibular and somatosensory inputs provided by sinusoidally tilting rooms may destabilize postural sway in the fore-aft as well as in the lateral direction. (2) In natural surrounding sway amplitudes increase with increasing eye-object distance up to 5 meters. Thus, teleologically, subjective height

Induced movement occurs not only when an object surrounding a stationary one moves below threshold but when it moves above threshold. The above-threshold effect is particularly puzzling and seemingly irrational because the relative displacement should be fully accounted for by perceiving the moving object in motion. The accepted theory has been that such excess motion can be explained in terms of a separation of systems: The enclosed object is governed by the relationship to its immediately surrounding frame of reference, and the latter is governed either by the relationship to its surrounding

Part I of the present work describes the fundamental problems important for understanding the function of fan-beam computerized tomography systems. First, the relationship between the number of detectors, the number of attenuation profiles, the number of volume elements in which the object slice is decomposed and the number of picture elements in the final image is explained. Then the influence of both the detector width and the sampling distance on the accuracy at which the attenuation profiles can be measured, is defined. Three spatial frequencies play an important part: the aperture cutoff

The round of stationary obstacles demanding localizing and definition of objects, was restored within 12--17 days after cutting of both optic nerves in Rana temporaria. Electrophysiological data indicated the restoration of connection between the retina and rostral thalamic nuclei by this time. The on-type impulse reactions to light stimuli in retinal ganglionic cell endings were observed. Retino-tectal connections were still disrupted. The role of retino-diencephalic projections in organization of the frog visually guided behaviour, is discussed.

Induced motion is illustrated by the apparent motion imparted to a stationary disc by the horizontal motion of an enclosing frame. The present study examined the effect of frame speed, with a constant extent of frame motion, on the magnitude of induced motion for average frame speeds varying from 0.17 to 2.85 deg s-1. The induced motion was measured by two methods. (i) The observer adjusted the horizontal distance between comparison posts to indicate the extent of the horizontal induced motion in a physically stationary disc. (ii) The observer adjusted the slant of a comparison rod to indicate

Extracellular records were made of the responses to precisely controlled stationary or moving visual stimuli of 174 units in the cerebellar vermis of cats anaesthetised with chloralose. Identified Purkinje cells and unidentified units responsed similarly. Responses to ON and to OFF steps of a stationary light bar had different characteristics. Some units showed changes in the form of their ON responses related to different positions of the stimulus in their large receptive fields. In some cases changes in response latency from different field positions were also noted. Some units responded onl

The count of events where sample areas from the second and subsequent frames of a TV-image sequence are incompatible with the corresponding sample area of the first frame are accumulated in a first-order difference picture (FODP). Analysis of this FODP provides a separate estimate for images of moving objects and of stationary scene components. We start from the hypothesis that the first frame represents the stationary scene component. Once it has been recognized that a subarea of this initial estimate corresponds to the image of a moving object, the grey values in this subarea are replaced by

Single binocular neurons were recorded in the frog diencephalon (area dorsalis posterior and area ventralis thalami). These neurons respond to any moving stimulus from 1 degree 30 to 32 degrees in diameter, without directional selectivity and to an ON-OFF light stimulation. They are not activated by stationary objects. Habituation is also commonly observed. The most important feature of these neurons is their wide receptive field which covers the whole visual field of the frog. Evidence that these neurons receive inputs from each tectum is discussed.

Male and female infants 10 weeks of age (N = 24) were presented with two distinctively patterned objects in either moving or stationary form. Measures of visual regard indicated the infants were able to discriminate between the objects whether the objects were stationary or in motion. The results are contrasted to T. G. R. Bower's assessment of infants' utilization of features in perceiving moving objects. The results are also compared to those of an earlier study which employed an operant rather than a preference technique to investigate this same problem.

Aliasing in CT images is the result of discrete sampling in the data-taking process. Artifacts associated with aliasing, while object-dependent, also depend on fundamental parameters such as beam width and the number of rays and views. This dependence has been studied in simulation with a phantom designed to represent a transaxial section through the lower head. Although the simulation program assumes a stationary detector system, the results do not depend strongly on geometry. Aliasing has also been compared with other sources of artifact which are often more significant, such as beam hardeni

To conduct electroencephalographic investigations of stationary and moving objects a small-sized 4-channel amplifier built with integrated microcircuits has been developed. Each channel includes a pre-amplifier, main amplifier, calibrator, high and low frequency filters and a power pack. The adoption of integrated microcircuits enables it to locate the pre-amplifiers directly on the object of investigations. The device is highly sensitive and secures a greater degree of noise-protection.

Single unit microelectrode recordings were made in the caudal thalamic region of the frog, Rana pipiens, from a sample of multimodal sensory units which included monocular, binocular, tactile, and spontaneous types, and which showed a wide variety of receptive field sizes, response rates, preferred stimulus sizes habituation rates, and velocity and tactile sensitivities. A number of special response properties were occasionally observed, including directional sensitivity, stationary object sensitivity, afterdischarges, and visual and tactile inhibitory fields. Computer analysis of spontaneousl

In an earlier study by Jansson and Johansson it was found that rotation of a rigid object is perceptually preferred over bending motion, and that bending motion in turn is preferred over two-dimensional stretching. The aim of the present experiment was to study if the same preference order is retained also when the proximal stimuli are changing in a physically more complex way. The stimuli were quadrangular outline figures with two stationary and two moving corners; the figures differed in degree of phase lag between the motions of the two corners. The result was that the preference order foun

The problem about visual discrimination between seeing objects in motion and perception of motion of the perceiver (locomotion) was taken up. A flow of vertical motion was presented to limited areas of the far periphery (45 degrees-90 degrees) of the retina simultaneously with optical information about a stationary room over the rest of the retina. The result was that most subjects perceived themselves as sitting in an elevator continuously moving upward or downward. Thus, peripheral motion stimulation over a few percent of the retinal area determines locomotion perception in apparent competit

1. Experiments were made on the cortex of the inferior parietal lobule in 10 hemispheres of six alert, behaving monkeys. The electrical signs of the impulse discharges of single cortical cells were recorded as the monkeys executed tasks requiring them to fixate stationary visual targets, track those which moved slowly, and to make saccadic movements to foveate those which suddenly jumped from one locus to another within the field of view. A total of 907 neurons of area 7 were identified in terms of their physiological properties, particularly the correlation of their activity with the oculomot

1. Eye- and head movements were recorded in unrestrained, spontaneously behaving rabbits with a new technique, based upon phase detection of signals induced in implanted coils by a rotating magnetic field. 2. Movements of the eye in space were exclusively saccadic. In the intersaccadic intervals the eyes were stabilized in space, even during vigorous head movements. Most of this stability was maintained in darkness, except for the occurrence of slow drift. 3. Many saccades were initiated while the head was stationary. They were accompanied by a similar, but slower head rotation with approximat

An operant technique was used to train 10-wk.-old infants on a simultaneous discrimination task with a checkerboard cube and a bull's-eye sphere presented in a stationary form. Discrimination testing with the objects in motion and with the objects stationary indicated that infants are able to discriminate between simultaneously presented objects whether stationary or in motion. The results are contrasted to T. G. R. Bower's assessment of infants' utilization of features in perceiving moving objects.

An error in the perceived distance of a physically stationary object results in an apparent horizontal motion of the object if the head is moved horizontally. Procedures have been developed to use this apparent motion to measure the apparent distance of the object. Research also has indicated that the apparent distance of an object will tend to be displaced toward the distance at which the eyes are fixated. In the present study head-motion procedures were used to measure the effect of eye fixation and attention upon the apparent distance of a point of light in two experiments. Substantial erro
