Effects of dietary supplementation of illite and bentonite in weaned piglets challenged with Escherichia coli.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of illite (IT) and bentonite (BE) on growth performance and intestinal health in weaned pigs challenged with Escherichia coli. A total of 24 (Duroc × Yorkshire × Landrace) weaned pigs (initial body weight: 9.61 ± 0.65 kg, 28 ± 3 days old) were assigned to six treatments with four replicates per treatment. Pigs were housed in individual pens for 17 days, including a 3-day adaptation period and 14 days after the first E. coli challenge. In the E. coli-challenged groups, all pigs were orally inoculated with a total of 10 mL of E. coli for

Optimizing broiler transport under hot-climate conditions: interventions across pre-transport, in-transit, and post-transport stages.

Broiler transport in hot climates is associated with higher heat stress, mortality, and meat-quality defects when high temperature and humidity combine with uneven ventilation to create hot, humid thermal core zones during prolonged feed and water deprivation. This review synthesizes mitigation options across pre-transport preparation, in-transit management, and post-transport recovery, focusing on practices feasible on farms and in processing plants and using a decision-relevant framing that prioritizes controlling total deprivation time, limiting within-load heat and humidity accumulation, a

Immunomodulatory strategies for ex vivo immune cell expansion in adoptive cell therapy: translational and regulatory considerations for clinical manufacturing.

Ex vivo expansion is a fundamental yet challenging step in the manufacturing of adoptive cell therapies (ACT), as therapeutic success relies on generating enough functional immune cells while maintaining their phenotype, metabolic fitness, and persistence. This review provides a comprehensive overview of immunomodulatory strategies designed to enhance cell yield during ex vivo expansion, categorizing them into cell-intrinsic and cell-extrinsic approaches. Cell-intrinsic strategies, including gene editing and gene transfer technologies, enable precise modulation of survival pathways, proliferat

Comparative analysis of bioenergetic pathways in Medusozoa based on integrated genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic data.

INTRODUCTION: Jellyfish possess the biochemical and physiological capabilities that enable them to survive from the beginning of the animal era to the impacts of global warming (ocean warming and deoxygenation) on the seas today. Despite their confirmed ability to bloom, significant gaps remain about the molecular basis of specific physiological responses, and limited data allow us to understand the metabolic pathways that enable medusozoans to transform energy and successfully cope with the challenges the marine environment imposes. METHODS: This research integrates and describes prior knowl

o-carborane encapsulated into polymeric micelles for proton boron capture therapy.

Proton boron capture therapy (PBCT), based on proton-boron fusion reactions (11B + p →3α + 8.7 MeV), has the potential to enhance the biological effectiveness of proton therapy. To achieve this potential, the efficient delivery of enough 11B to cancer cells will be paramount. This study demonstrates a newly developed method of poor solvent-mediated spontaneous assembly of polymeric micelles with entrapped o-carborane, in which ethanol is a good solvent for the payload o-carborane but a poor solvent for the hydrophobic segment poly(ε-caprolactone) in this amphiphilic block copolymer. This metho

Impact of an Age-Stratified Augmented Take-Home Ration on Nutritional Recovery in Under-Five Children With Uncomplicated SAM: A Community-Based Prospective Study in Southern Jharkhand.

BACKGROUND: Community-based management of acute malnutrition (CMAM) often lacks context-specific evidence regarding the scaling and age-stratification of Take-Home Rations (THR). This study evaluates the association of nutritional recovery at four-month follow-up with this age-appropriate augmented THR ("Shishu Shakti"), delivering 490 kcal and 17 g of protein per 100 g versus standard uniform THR, which yielded 432.27 kcal and 13.95 g of protein per 100 g among children with uncomplicated severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in Southern Jharkhand. METHODS: A community-based prospective cohort stu

All-Cause Excess Mortality During the COVID-19 Pandemic in a Rural Area of North India.

Introduction COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted global mortality; however, many deaths were underreported. Excess mortality explains both direct and indirect impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and therefore provides true and better estimates of pandemic deaths. Objectives The objective of this study was to estimate excess all-cause mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic in a rural area of North India. Methods The study was carried out in the field practice area of the Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC) of a tertiary care hospital in North India. This area covers fifteen villages where hom

Goat and cow milk merits distinct nutritional and functional properties based on simulated gastrointestinal digestion of infant.

The nutritional and functional properties of goat and cow milk in digestive tract of infant is unclear. Applying simulated infant gastrointestinal digestion method, this study aims to systematically compare digestibility, peptide profiling, and immunomodulatory role of goat and cow milk, and further characterize their role in regulating homeostasis of gut microbiota and metabolism. It's found that the degree of hydrolysis and number of detected peptides was higher in goat milk (GM), while the relative abundance of predicted allergic peptides was higher in cow milk (CM). In addition, the expres

Wheat forage quality: significance, genetic and genomic advances, knowledge gaps, and future directions.

Winter wheat is grown worldwide primarily for grain, yet it also serves as an important cool-season forage, supporting livestock production when other feed is scarce. Wheat can be utilized as grazed pasture or harvested as hay, silage, and straw, and is widely used as dual-purpose (forage + grain) and double-cropping systems. During vegetative growth, wheat forage is highly palatable and nutritive, typically containing 20-30% crude protein (CP), and >80% digestibility, supporting rapid liveweight gains in beef cattle. However, forage quality is highly dynamic: as wheat matures, CP and energy d

Povidone-Iodine Versus Homemade Salt/Soda Mouthwash for the Prophylaxis of Radiation-Induced Oral Mucositis in Head and Neck Cancer: A Quasi-experimental Study.

Background Radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM) is a common acute toxicity of radiotherapy for head and neck cancer and may compromise treatment delivery. Povidone-iodine is commonly used for prophylaxis at our centre, whereas a homemade salt/soda mouthwash is an inexpensive alternative. This study compared these two rinses for preventing RIOM. Methods This prospective quasi-experimental study enrolled 110 adults with histologically confirmed head and neck cancer receiving conventional two-dimensional external-beam radiotherapy (60-66 Gy over 6-6.5 weeks) at Dhaka Medical College Hospital,

Dietary yeast culture supplementation alleviates transportation stress in goats.

The addition of yeast cultures to diets has been demonstrated to maintain the homeostasis of the rumen endo-environment and to enhance the body's immunity. However, the effect of yeast cultures on alleviating transportation stress remains unclear. A total of 16 goats were randomly distributed into 2 dietary treatments (8 replicates/treatment) as follows: Basic diet group (CON); basic diet + 0.3% YC group (YC). The experiment lasted for a total of 46 days, consisting of a 30-day growth trial, followed by a one-day transportation stress treatment, and subsequently a 14-day feeding trial. Samples

Cretaceous Chikuniidae fam. nov. (Diptera: Brachycera) illuminates the evolution of blood-feeding in lower brachyceran flies.

With over 80 000 extant species, brachycerans are among the most diverse insect lineages, exhibiting a wide range of feeding strategies and ecological adaptations. Originating in the Early Jurassic, this megadiverse clade then underwent rapid speciation and morphological diversification during the Mesozoic, profoundly shaping its modern diversity. However, the early evolutionary history of many lineages remains poorly known due to a sparse fossil record. Here, we describe a new brachyceran family, †Chikuniidae Feng, Yang, Engel, Ren et Wang fam. nov., from mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber. Phylogen
