[An intervention policy for reducing noise pollution in urban areas].

The methodological methods for a reduction of the noise pollution in the urban areas, mainly, can be advised in 8 operative points: 1) reduction of the source's noise; 2) control of the traffic; 3) planning of the urban and regional development; 4) building's shelter against the noise; 5) compensation's and incentivation's interventions for the exposed people; 6) controls activity and restaining of the noise's sources; 7) scientific research; 8) health education. For executive motivations we must, necessarily, divide the intervention turned to a reduction of the noise's emissions caused by fix

Lung cancer and diesel exhaust: a review.

The evidence from animal studies indicates that organic extracts of diesel particulate are mutagenic and carcinogenic. Of four animal inhalation studies, two have been positive and two have been largely negative. The most recent data indicate that inhalation studies may be positive only with high doses of exhaust. Human studies of diesel-exposed occupations have been inconclusive. These studies have focused on truck drivers, bus drivers and garage workers, railroad workers, and heavy equipment operators. Most human studies have not been able to estimate exposure to diesel exhaust. Negative stu

The response of railway passengers to pressure fluctuations.

This paper describes a study carried out on behalf of Deutsche Bundesbahn (West German Railways) by British Rail in collaboration with the Institute of Consumer Ergonomics. The aim was to evaluate subjective responses to predicted pressure fluctuations that are likely to occur in vehicles that will run on a new railway line under construction. The study showed that most subjects found the pressure fluctuations acceptable but there was a significant proportion of subjects who found the most severe pressure fluctuations uncomfortable.

Studies on motion sickness caused by high curve speed railway vehicles. Evaluation of the swing and its effects on passengers and conductors.

The high curve speed railway vehicles (HCSRVs) of the Japanese National Railway have been operating since 1973 with the aim of increasing speed on ordinary routes with many curve track sections. Although the aim of increased speed has been attained, it has been pointed out that the swing of HCSRVs is stronger than that of ordinary-type trains and it may increase motion sickness among the passengers and conductors. In this study, the authors examined motion sickness symptoms among 119 passengers and 100 conductors of both trains with a self-administered questionnaire, and evaluated the vibratio

Minimum visual requirements in different occupations in Finland.

In Finland the employers can individually fix the minimum visual requirements for their personnel in almost every occupation. In transportation, in police and national defence proper eyesight is regarded so important that strict visual requirements for these have been fixed by the Government. The regulations are often more close when accepting the person to the occupation than later on when working. The minimum requirements are mostly stated for visual acuity, colour perception and visual fields. In some occupations the regulations concern also the refractive error of the eyes and possible eye

Death and injury from motor vehicle crashes in Israel: epidemiology, prevention and control.

Death and motor vehicle crash (MVC) rates per 1000 vehicles and kilometres travelled in Israel (1977) exceed those of all western countries, despite low numbers of young and intoxicated drivers. Increased casualties have resulted from expansion of driver and vehicle populations offsetting a decline in crash risk. Time data indicate casualty crash trends reflect trends in traffic volume, and that night time case fatality rates (CFR) are high. Place data indicate that more than three quarters of all crashes occur in cities, mostly involving pedestrians, but the majority of deaths result from hig
