The role of motion in visual working memory for dynamic stimuli: More lagged but more precise representations of moving objects.

While most visual working memory studies use static stimuli with unchanging features, objects in the real world are often dynamic, introducing significant differences in the surface feature information hitting the retina from the same object over time (e.g., changes in orientation, lighting, shadows). Previous research on dynamic stimuli has shown that change detection is improved if objects obey rules of physical motion, but it is unclear how memory for visual features interacts with object motion. In the current study, we investigated whether object motion facilitates greater temporal integr

Laser Doppler multi-beam differential vibration sensor based on a line-scan CMOS camera for real-time buried objects detection.

Laser Doppler vibrometers (LDVs) traditionally used for ground vibration sensing in laser-acoustic detection of buried objects are limited to operation from a stationary platform due to their sensitivity to the motion of the LDV itself. In order to overcome this limitation a novel Laser Multi-Beam Differential Interferometric Sensor (LAMBDIS), has been developed. The LAMBDIS allows for measurements of vibration fields with interferometric sensitivity, while having low sensitivity to the motion of the sensor itself. The LAMBDIS described in this paper is based on a digital line-scan CMOS camera

Recursion-driven bispectral imaging for dynamic scattering scenes.

Imaging dynamic strongly scattering scenes remains a significant challenge because it is typically believed that moving objects and dynamic media provide huge barriers. Instead, we use the dynamics of objects and media and put forward a recursion-driven bispectral imaging (ReDBI) framework here for the reconstruction of a stationary or moving object hidden behind the dynamic media. ReDBI avoids the errors introduced by speckle modulation and phase-retrieval algorithms in the existing studies. We also quantitatively assess the reconstruction difficulty of character and shape objects with the be

Perception of Size and Mass Relationships of Moving and Stationary Object in Collision Events in 10-to-11-Month-Old Infants.

Around 5.5-6.5 months of age, infants first attend to object size and perceive its mass cues in simple collision events. Infants attend to the size of the moving object and expect a greater displacement following a collision with a large object and stationary object, and lesser displacement following a collision with a small object and stationary object. It has been proposed that infants of 6-to-7 months of age can differentiate between sizes of moving objects but do not perceive the size and mass relationships in simple collision events. The present two investigations aimed to investigate whe

The accuracy of object motion perception during locomotion.

Human observers are capable of perceiving the motion of moving objects relative to the stationary world, even while undergoing self-motion. Perceiving world-relative object motion is complicated because the local optical motion of objects is influenced by both observer and object motion, and reflects object motion in observer coordinates. It has been proposed that observers recover world-relative object motion using global optic flow to factor out the influence of self-motion. However, object-motion judgments during simulated self-motion are biased, as if the visual system cannot completely co

Neural mechanisms to incorporate visual counterevidence in self motion estimation.

In selecting appropriate behaviors, animals should weigh sensory evidence both for and against specific beliefs about the world. For instance, animals measure optic flow to estimate and control their own rotation. However, existing models of flow detection can confuse the movement of external objects with genuine self motion. Here, we show that stationary patterns on the retina, which constitute negative evidence against self rotation, are used by the fruit fly Drosophila to suppress inappropriate stabilizing rotational behavior. In silico experiments show that artificial neural networks optim

Frontal-to-visual information flow explains predictive motion tracking.

Predictive tracking demonstrates our ability to maintain a line of vision on moving objects even when they temporarily disappear. Models of smooth pursuit eye movements posit that our brain achieves this ability by directly streamlining motor programming from continuously updated sensory motion information. To test this hypothesis, we obtained sensory motion representation from multivariate electroencephalogram activity while human participants covertly tracked a temporarily occluded moving stimulus with their eyes remaining stationary at the fixation point. The sensory motion representation o

Real-time vibrotactile pattern generation and identification using discrete event-driven feedback.

This study assesses human identification of vibrotactile patterns by using real-time discrete event-driven feedback. Previously acquired force and bend sensor data from a robotic hand were used to predict movement-type (stationary, flexion, contact, extension, release) and object-type (no object, hard object, soft object) states by using decision tree (DT) algorithms implemented in a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). Six able-bodied humans performed a 2- and 3-step sequential pattern recognition task in which state transitions were signaled as vibrotactile feedback. The stimuli were genera

Causal inference during closed-loop navigation: parsing of self- and object-motion.

A key computation in building adaptive internal models of the external world is to ascribe sensory signals to their likely cause(s), a process of Bayesian Causal Inference (CI). CI is well studied within the framework of two-alternative forced-choice tasks, but less well understood within the cadre of naturalistic action-perception loops. Here, we examine the process of disambiguating retinal motion caused by self- and/or object-motion during closed-loop navigation. First, we derive a normative account specifying how observers ought to intercept hidden and moving targets given their belief ove

Exotic Compact Objects and the Fate of the Light-Ring Instability.

Ultracompact objects with light rings (LRs) but without an event horizon could mimic black holes (BHs) in their strong gravity phenomenology. But are such objects dynamically viable? Stationary and axisymmetric ultracompact objects that can form from smooth, quasi-Minkowski initial data must have at least one stable LR, which has been argued to trigger a spacetime instability; but its development and fate have been unknown. Using fully nonlinear numerical evolutions of ultracompact bosonic stars free of any other known instabilities and introducing a novel adiabatic effective potential techniq

Acuity of Proprioceptive Localization Varies with Body Region.

We accurately sense locations of objects touching various points on the body and, if they are irritants, make accurate rapid movements to remove them. Such movements require accurate proprioception of orientation and motion of the reaching limb and of the target. However, it is unknown whether acuity of these sensations is similar for different points on the body. We investigated accuracy of comfortable speed reaching movements of the right index-tip by 10 subjects (five females) to touch 12 different body locations with and without vision with the body part stationary in different locations a

Avoidance behaviours while circumventing to the left or right of someone with different shoulder widths and facing directions: How do side, width, or orientation matter?

BACKGROUND: Collision avoidance during locomotion is influenced by a variety of situational factors. When circumventing around an inanimate object, the amount of clearance is dependent on the side of avoidance. When avoiding other pedestrians, individuals most often choose to walk behind a moving pedestrian, and avoid people differently depending on their body size. However, side of avoidance has not been evaluated with human obstacles, nor facing direction of a stationary pedestrian, nor the size of a single pedestrian. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate these knowledge gaps conc

Vision-Based Detection of Low-Emission Sources in Suburban Areas Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.

The paper discusses the problem of detecting emission sources in a low buildings area using unmanned aerial vehicles. The problem was analyzed, and methods of solving it were presented. Various data acquisition scenarios and their impact on the feasibility of the task were analyzed. A method for detecting smoke objects over buildings using stationary video sequences acquired with a drone in hover with the camera in the nadir position is proposed. The method uses differential frame information from stabilized video sequences and the YOLOv7 classifier. A convolutional network classifier was used

Diagnosis of the Pneumatic Wheel Condition Based on Vibration Analysis of the Sprung Mass in the Vehicle Self-Diagnostics System.

This paper presents a method for the multi-criteria classification of data in terms of identifying pneumatic wheel imbalance on the basis of vehicle body vibrations in normal operation conditions. The paper uses an expert system based on search graphs that apply source features of objects and distances from points in the space of classified objects (the metric used). Rules generated for data obtained from tests performed under stationary and road conditions using a chassis dynamometer were used to develop the expert system. The recorded linear acceleration signals of the vehicle body were anal

Scale dependence of fractal dimension in deterministic and stochastic Lorenz-63 systems.

Many natural systems show emergent phenomena at different scales, leading to scaling regimes with signatures of deterministic chaos at large scales and an apparently random behavior at small scales. These features are usually investigated quantitatively by studying the properties of the underlying attractor, the compact object asymptotically hosting the trajectories of the system with their invariant density in the phase space. This multi-scale nature of natural systems makes it practically impossible to get a clear picture of the attracting set. Indeed, it spans over a wide range of spatial s

Reducing the Uncertainty of the Moving Object Location Measurement with the Method of Quasi-Multiple Measurement in GNSS Technology in Symmetrical Arrangement.

The article presents a solution to the problem of limited accuracy of dynamic measurements performed with GNSS receivers. The proposed measurement method is a response to the needs related to the assessment of the measurement uncertainty of the position of the track axis of the rail transport line. However, the problem of reducing the measurement uncertainty is universal for many different situations where high accuracy of positioning of objects is required, especially in motion. The article proposes a new method to determine object's location using geometric constraints of a number of GNSS re

Continuous Comprehensive Monitoring of Melt Pool Morphology Under Realistic Printing Scenarios with Laser Powder Bed Fusion.

In laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing, the melt pool (MP) characteristics are key indicators for process and part defects. For example, the laser scan location on the build plate can slightly change the MP size and shape due to the f-θ optics of the printer. The laser scan parameters can cause variations in MP signatures that may indicate lack-of-fusion and keyhole regimes. However, the effects of these process parameters on MP monitoring (MPM) signatures and part properties are not yet fully understood, especially during a multilayer big-part printing. In this study, our ob

Proprioception gates visual object fixation in flying flies.

Visual object tracking in animals as diverse as felines, frogs, and fish supports behaviors including predation, predator avoidance, and landscape navigation. Decades of experimental results show that a rigidly body-fixed tethered fly in a "virtual reality" visual flight simulator steers to follow the motion of a vertical bar, thereby "fixating" it on visual midline. This behavior likely reflects a desire to seek natural features such as plant stalks and has inspired algorithms for visual object tracking predicated on robust responses to bar velocity, particularly near visual midline. Using a

Understanding the encoding of object locations in small-scale spaces during free exploration using eye tracking.

Navigation is instrumental to daily life and is often used to encode and locate objects, such as keys in one's house. Yet, little is known about how navigation works in more ecologically valid situations such as finding objects within a room. Specifically, it is not clear how vision vs. body movements contribute differentially to spatial memory in such small-scale spaces. In the current study, participants encoded object locations by viewing them while standing (stationary condition) or by additionally being guided by the experimenter while blindfolded (walking condition) after viewing the obj
