Hierarchical motion perception as causal inference.

Since motion can only be defined relative to a reference frame, which reference frame guides perception? A century of psychophysical studies has produced conflicting evidence: retinotopic, egocentric, world-centric, or even object-centric. We introduce a hierarchical Bayesian model mapping retinal velocities to perceived velocities. Our model mirrors the structure in the world, in which visual elements move within causally connected reference frames. Friction renders velocities in these reference frames mostly stationary, formalized by an additional delta component (at zero) in the prior. Inve

Background matching can reduce responsiveness of jumping spiders to stimuli in motion.

Motion and camouflage were previously considered to be mutually exclusive, as sudden movements can be easily detected. Background matching, for instance, is a well-known, effective camouflage strategy where the colour and pattern of a stationary animal match its surrounding background. However, background matching may lose its efficacy when the animal moves, as the boundaries of the animal become more defined against its background. Recent evidence shows otherwise, as camouflaged objects can be less detectable than uncamouflaged objects even while in motion. Here, we explored whether the detec

AIRPORT: A Data Consistency Constrained Deep Temporal Extrapolation Method To Improve Temporal Resolution In Contrast Enhanced CT Imaging.

Typical tomographic image reconstruction methods require that the imaged object is static and stationary during the time window to acquire a minimally complete data set. The violation of this requirement leads to temporal-averaging errors in the reconstructed images. For a fixed gantry rotation speed, to reduce the errors, it is desired to reconstruct images using data acquired over a narrower angular range, i.e., with a higher temporal resolution. However, image reconstruction with a narrower angular range violates the data sufficiency condition, resulting in severe data-insufficiency-induced

Neural sensitivity to translational self- and object-motion velocities.

The ability to detect and assess world-relative object-motion is a critical computation performed by the visual system. This computation, however, is greatly complicated by the observer's movements, which generate a global pattern of motion on the observer's retina. How the visual system implements this computation is poorly understood. Since we are potentially able to detect a moving object if its motion differs in velocity (or direction) from the expected optic flow generated by our own motion, here we manipulated the relative motion velocity between the observer and the object within a stat

Chimera metasurface for multiterrain invisibility.

Invisibility, a fascinating ability of hiding objects within environments, has attracted broad interest for a long time. However, current invisibility technologies are still restricted to stationary environments and narrow band. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a Chimera metasurface for multiterrain invisibility by synthesizing the natural camouflage traits of various poikilotherms. The metasurface achieves chameleon-like broadband in situ tunable microwave reflection mimicry of realistic water surface, shoal, beach/desert, grassland, and frozen ground from 8 to 12 GHz freely via the circui

Neuroimaging evidence of visual-vestibular interaction accounting for perceptual mislocalization induced by head rotation.

SIGNIFICANCE: A fleeting flash aligned vertically with an object remaining stationary in the head-centered space would be perceived as lagging behind the object during the observer's horizontal head rotation. This perceptual mislocalization is an illusion named head-rotation-induced flash-lag effect (hFLE). While many studies have investigated the neural mechanism of the classical visual FLE, the hFLE has been hardly investigated. AIM: We measured the cortical activity corresponding to the hFLE on participants experiencing passive head rotations using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. A

Labeled dataset for bee detection and direction estimation on entrance to beehive.

The datasets for bee detection, pose estimation and segmentation consist of organized folders containing both images and corresponding labels. The detection dataset comprises a total of 7200 individual frames collected at 8 different beehives. The pose dataset contains 400 images of bees annotated with two key points per bee. The first point marks a head, second point marks a stinger. All frames have a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. The segmentation dataset contains 2300 cropped images of bees. These cropped images are annotated with triangular markers that aid in estimating directional vecto

The High/Low Frequency Balance Drives Tactile Perception of Noisy Vibrations.

Noisy vibrotactile signals transmitted during tactile explorations of an object provide precious information on the nature of its surface. Understanding the link between signal properties and how they are interpreted by the tactile sensory system remains challenging. In this paper, we investigated human perception of broadband, stationary vibrations recorded during exploration of textures and reproduced using a vibrotactile actuator. Since intensity is a well-established perceptual attribute, we here focused on the relevance of the spectral content. The stimuli were first equalized in perceive

The Active Place Avoidance (APA) Test, an Effective, Versatile and Repeatable Spatial Learning Task for Mice.

Hippocampus-dependent spatial learning in rodents has been tested using a variety of methods. These include the Morris water maze (MWM), Y-maze, and novel object location (NOL) tasks. More recently, the active place avoidance (APA) task has been developed as an alternative to these more traditional approaches. In the APA task, mice must use spatial cues placed around a rotating arena to avoid a stationary shock zone. Due to the multiple parameters that can be adjusted, the APA task has been demonstrated to be a very versatile approach. It lends itself to being used longitudinally and repeatedl

SORI: A softness-rendering interface to unravel the nature of softness perception.

Tactile perception of softness serves a critical role in the survival, well-being, and social interaction among various species, including humans. This perception informs activities from food selection in animals to medical palpation for disease detection in humans. Despite its fundamental importance, a comprehensive understanding of how softness is neurologically and cognitively processed remains elusive. Previous research has demonstrated that the somatosensory system leverages both cutaneous and kinesthetic cues for the sensation of softness. Factors such as contact area, depth, and force p

Corrective mechanisms of motion extrapolation.

Transmission and processing of sensory information in the visual system takes time. For motion perception, our brain can overcome this intrinsic neural delay through extrapolation mechanisms and accurately predict the current position of a continuously moving object. But how does the system behave when the motion abruptly changes and the prediction becomes wrong? Here we address this question by studying the perceived position of a moving object with various abrupt motion changes by human observers. We developed a task in which a bar is monotonously moving horizontally, and then motion suddenl

Learning Temporal Distribution and Spatial Correlation Toward Universal Moving Object Segmentation.

The goal of moving object segmentation is separating moving objects from stationary backgrounds in videos. One major challenge in this problem is how to develop a universal model for videos from various natural scenes since previous methods are often effective only in specific scenes. In this paper, we propose a method called Learning Temporal Distribution and Spatial Correlation (LTS) that has the potential to be a general solution for universal moving object segmentation. In the proposed approach, the distribution from temporal pixels is first learned by our Defect Iterative Distribution Lea

Aerial single target acuity of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) for stationary and moving targets of varying contrast.

Harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) need to detect single objects for example when orienting to landmarks or hunting prey. The detection of single objects, described by the single target acuity (STA), cannot be deduced from formerly determined grating acuity (GA) as different mechanisms underlie STA and GA. Thus, we assessed STA for stationary and moving single targets with varying contrast in two harbor seals in a first approach in air. In a two-alternative-forced-choice discrimination task, the seals had to indicate whether the single target was presented in a left or right stimulus field on a mon

Effect of Active Workstations on Neurocognitive Performance and Typing Skills: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Extended sedentary behavior is a risk factor for chronic disease and mortality, even among those who exercise regularly. Given the time constraints of incorporating physical activity into daily schedules, and the high likelihood of sitting during office work, this environment may serve as a potentially feasible setting for interventions to reduce sedentary behavior. METHODS AND RESULTS: A randomized cross-over clinical trial was conducted at an employee wellness center. Four office settings were evaluated on 4 consecutive days: stationary or sitting station on day 1 (referent), an

Spatial and temporal motion characterization for x-ray CT.

BACKGROUND: Motion induced image artifacts have been the focus of many investigations for x-ray computed tomography (CT). Methodologies of combating patient motion include the use of gating devices to optimize the data acquisition, reduction in patient scan time via faster gantry rotation and large detector coverage, and the development of advanced reconstruction and post-processing algorithms to minimize motion artifacts. PURPOSE: Previously proposed approaches are generally "global" in nature in that motion is characterized for the entire image. It is well known, however, that the presence

A novel approach to texture recognition combining deep learning orthogonal convolution with regional input features.

Textures provide a powerful segmentation and object detection cue. Recent research has shown that deep convolutional nets like Visual Geometry Group (VGG) and ResNet perform well in non-stationary texture datasets. Non-stationary textures have local structures that change from one region of the image to the other. This is consistent with the view that deep convolutional networks are good at detecting local microstructures disguised as textures. However, stationary textures are textures that have statistical properties that are constant or slow varying over the entire region are not well detect

Single target acuity for moving targets in the common sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus).

The common sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus) likely relies on vision for many vital behaviors that require the perception of small objects such as detection of prey items or body marks of conspecifics. A previous study documented the single target acuity (STA) for stationary targets. Under many, if not most, circumstances, however, objects of interest are moving, which is why the current study tested the effect of the ecologically relevant parameter motion on sunfish STA. The STA was determined in two sunfish for targets moving randomly at a velocity of 3.4 deg/s. The STA for moving targets (0.144±0.
