The impact of multiple exposures and movement on the fear response of poultry.

Fear tests are a common research method to assess the affective state of an animal. This study aimed to assess: 1) the impact of repeated exposure to fear tests on fear response and, 2) how the addition of movement to fear stimuli during a novel object test impacts bird fear response. Over two trials, a total of 3,600 Ross 308 birds (1800 birds/trial) were raised until 42 days of age. At 23d, 30d, and 37d, three fear tests were performed, novel object, human approach, and response to observer tests. The novel object test was split into three movement treatments, stationary, intermittent, and c

Attenuated processing of vowels in the left temporal cortex predicts speech-in-noise perception deficit in children with autism.

BACKGROUND: Difficulties with speech-in-noise perception in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) may be associated with impaired analysis of speech sounds, such as vowels, which represent the fundamental phoneme constituents of human speech. Vowels elicit early (< 100 ms) sustained processing negativity (SPN) in the auditory cortex that reflects the detection of an acoustic pattern based on the presence of formant structure and/or periodic envelope information (f0) and its transformation into an auditory "object". METHODS: We used magnetoencephalography (MEG) and individual brain models to investi

Discovering the Bioactive Compounds Binding to α1A-Adrenergic Receptor in Guizhi Fuling Formula and Revealing Their Interactions by Immobilizing the Receptor Through Colicin L7 DNase/Immunity Protein 7 Ultra-Affinity System.

In this work, Guizhi Fuling Formula (GFF), as well as α1A-adrenergic receptor (α1A-AR) were taken as the research objects. By utilizing the ultra-affinity between Colicin L7 DNase (CL7) and its homologous immune protein 7 (Im7), CL7-tagged α1A-AR was oriented immobilized to the Im7-coated silica gel surface. With the α1A-AR immobilized column in hand, the active compounds in GFF targeted to α1A-AR were screened, and the binding procedures were analyzed. The composite characterization demonstrated that the α1A-AR can be immobilized to the chromatographic stationary phase with good specificity a

How social reinforcement learning can lead to metastable polarisation and the voter model.

Previous explanations for the persistence of polarization of opinions have typically included modelling assumptions that predispose the possibility of polarization (i.e., assumptions allowing a pair of agents to drift apart in their opinion such as repulsive interactions or bounded confidence). An exception is a recent simulation study showing that polarization is persistent when agents form their opinions using social reinforcement learning. Our goal is to highlight the usefulness of reinforcement learning in the context of modeling opinion dynamics, but that caution is required when selectin

Soothing touch matters: Patterns of everyday mother-infant physical contact and their real-time physiological implications.

Physical contact between infants and caregivers is crucial for attachment development. Previous research shows that skin-to-skin contact after birth and frequent baby wearing in the first year predict secure attachment at 12-months. This relationship is thought to be mediated by the activation of infants' parasympathetic nervous system through caregiver touch. However, little is known about everyday touch behaviors and their impact on infants' real-time parasympathetic activity. Laboratory observations may not accurately represent real-world interactions, highlighting the need for ecologically

Attention moderates the motion silencing effect for dynamic orientation changes in a discrimination task.

Being able to detect changes in our visual environment reliably and quickly is important for many daily tasks. The motion silencing effect describes a decrease in the ability to detect feature changes for faster moving objects compared with stationary or slowly moving objects. One theory is that spatiotemporal receptive field properties in early vision might account for the silencing effect, suggesting that its origins are low-level visual processing. Here, we explore whether spatial attention can modulate motion silencing of orientation changes to gain greater understanding of the underlying

Chilean brush-tailed mouse (Octodon degus): a diurnal precocial rodent as a new model to study visual receptive field properties of superior colliculus neurons.

Lab rodent species commonly used to study the visual system and its development (hamsters, rats, and mice) are crepuscular/nocturnal, altricial, and possess simpler visual systems than carnivores and primates. To widen the spectra of studied species, here we introduce an alternative model, the Chilean degu (Octodon degus). This diurnal, precocial Caviomorph rodent has a cone-enriched, well-structured retina, and well-developed central visual projections. To assess degus' visual physiological properties, we characterized the visual responses and receptive field (RF) properties of isolated neuro

Days-old zebrafish rapidly learn to recognize threatening agents through noradrenergic and forebrain circuits.

Animals need to rapidly learn to recognize and avoid predators. This ability may be especially important for young animals due to their increased vulnerability. It is unknown whether, and how, nascent vertebrates are capable of such rapid learning. Here, we used a robotic predator-prey interaction assay to show that 1 week after fertilization-a developmental stage where they have approximately 1% the number of neurons of adults-zebrafish larvae rapidly and robustly learn to recognize a stationary object as a threat after the object pursues the fish for ∼1 min. Larvae continue to avoid the thre

Optimizing dual energy X-ray image enhancement using a novel hybrid fusion method.

BACKGROUND: Airport security is still a main concern for assuring passenger safety and stopping illegal activity. Dual-energy X-ray Imaging (DEXI) is one of the most important technologies for detecting hidden items in passenger luggage. However, noise in DEXI images, arising from various sources such as electronic interference and fluctuations in X-ray intensity, can compromise the effectiveness of object identification. OBJECTIVE: To address the challenge of noise interference in DEXI, this study aims to develop and validate a robust denoising technique using the Discrete Wavelet Transform

Improving Object Detection for Time-Lapse Imagery Using Temporal Features in Wildlife Monitoring.

Monitoring animal populations is crucial for assessing the health of ecosystems. Traditional methods, which require extensive fieldwork, are increasingly being supplemented by time-lapse camera-trap imagery combined with an automatic analysis of the image data. The latter usually involves some object detector aimed at detecting relevant targets (commonly animals) in each image, followed by some postprocessing to gather activity and population data. In this paper, we show that the performance of an object detector in a single frame of a time-lapse sequence can be improved by including spatio-te

Microsaccade selectivity as discriminative feature for object decoding.

Microsaccades, a form of fixational eye movements, help maintain visual stability during stationary observations. This study examines the modulation of microsaccadic rates by various stimulus categories in monkeys and humans during a passive viewing task. Stimulus sets were grouped into four primary categories: human, animal, natural, and man-made. Distinct post-stimulus microsaccade patterns were identified across these categories, enabling successful decoding of the stimulus category with accuracy and recall of up to 85%. We observed that microsaccade rates are independent of pupil size chan

Situated Visualization in Motion.

We define visualization in motion and make several contributions to how to visualize and design situated visualizations in motion. In situated data visualization, the data are directly visualized near their data referent (i.e., the physical space, object, or person it refers to) (Bressa et al., 2022). Situated visualizations are often useful in contexts where the data referent or the viewer does not remain stationary but is in relative motion. For example, a runner looks at visualizations from their fitness band while running. Reading visualizations in such scenarios might be impacted by motio

Intra-orbital Foreign Body.

BACKGROUND: This case report describes a young man with an intra-orbital foreign body (FB) in both eyes. CASE REPORT: Intra-orbital FBs are rare, with few cases reported in the literature. This is because the orbit protects the globe from external forces, and the orbit is a closed cavity with one opening. This report details the case of a 28-year-old man who presented to the emergency unit with an 11-hour history of an intra-orbital FB. The patient was lying on a bench when a stationary motorcycle fell on him. He noticed that he was unable to open both eyes and was rushed to a peripheral hosp

Episodic Visual Hallucinations, Inference and Free Energy.

Understandings of how visual hallucinations appear have been highly influenced by generative approaches, in particular Friston's Active Inference conceptualization. Their core proposition is that these phenomena occur when hallucinatory expectations outweigh actual sensory data. This imbalance occurs as the brain seeks to minimize informational free energy, a measure of the distance between predicted and actual sensory data in a stationary open system. We review this approach in the light of old and new information on the role of environmental factors in episodic hallucinations. In particular,

Selective activations and functional connectivities to the sight of faces, scenes, body parts and tools in visual and non-visual cortical regions leading to the human hippocampus.

Connectivity maps are now available for the 360 cortical regions in the Human Connectome Project Multimodal Parcellation atlas. Here we add function to these maps by measuring selective fMRI activations and functional connectivity increases to stationary visual stimuli of faces, scenes, body parts and tools from 956 HCP participants. Faces activate regions in the ventrolateral visual cortical stream (FFC), in the superior temporal sulcus (STS) visual stream for face and head motion; and inferior parietal visual (PGi) and somatosensory (PF) regions. Scenes activate ventromedial visual stream VM

Targeting the fatty acid binding proteins disrupts multiple myeloma cell cycle progression and MYC signaling.

Multiple myeloma is an incurable plasma cell malignancy with only a 53% 5-year survival rate. There is a critical need to find new multiple myeloma vulnerabilities and therapeutic avenues. Herein, we identified and explored a novel multiple myeloma target: the fatty acid binding protein (FABP) family. In our work, myeloma cells were treated with FABP inhibitors (BMS3094013 and SBFI-26) and examined in vivo and in vitro for cell cycle state, proliferation, apoptosis, mitochondrial membrane potential, cellular metabolism (oxygen consumption rates and fatty acid oxidation), and DNA methylation pr
