Ultrasonographic evaluation of submandibular salivary glands in female patients with hypothyroidism: a fractal analysis study.

BACKGROUND: Hypothyroidism is known to affect salivary gland physiology, yet structural alterations detectable by ultrasonography remain unclear. Fractal analysis (FA), a quantitative method for assessing tissue complexity, may aid in identifying subtle parenchymal changes. This study aimed to evaluate submandibular gland ultrasonographic texture in female hypothyroid patients using FA. METHODS: Fifty female patients with medically controlled hypothyroidism and 50 age-matched healthy women were included in this cross-sectional study. The diagnosis of hypothyroidism was confirmed based on seru

Intelligent surgical workflow recognition-based skill assessment for minimally invasive submandibular gland resection.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming clinical dental practice, with most applications focusing on static images like radiographs. However, the integration of AI in analyzing video data, particularly in surgical settings rich in dynamic information, remains underexplored in oral medicine. This study introduces AI-miSMG, an intelligent surgical workflow recognition model designed for minimally invasive submandibular gland (SMG) resection. Building upon our previous work, we established a standardized annotation protocol to efficiently label endoscopic SMG resection procedures, which are

Integrating basal and reserve salivary function defines clinically anchored functional phenotypes and contextualises salivary end points in Sjögren's disease.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland dysfunction in Sjögren's disease (SjD) is clinically heterogeneous. Unstimulated whole salivary flow (UWSF) reflects basal secretion, while stimulated tests such as the Saxon test assess secretory reserve. Whether integrating these complementary domains defines clinically meaningful glandular functional states remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 193 anti-Sjögren's syndrome antigen A (anti-SSA)-positive patients with SjD. Using established clinical thresholds for UWSF and the Saxon test, we defined three functional phenotypes: prese

Polymicrobial submandibular abscess by anaerobic bacteria: A rare case report.

Deep neck space infections are infections in the potential spaces of the neck that can lead to the formation of abscesses, the most common site being the submandibular gland. These infections commonly are odontogenic in origin and are polymicrobial. Infection being polymicrobial can be caused by both aerobes and anaerobes, where anaerobes are present as normal microbiota and become infectious when there is a breach in the natural barrier. Anaerobes are commonly neglected due to their fastidious nature, stringent transportation, conventional culture methods, and prolonged incubation. Identifyin

Porcine submandibular glands as potential salivary gland experimental models: histological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural characterization.

Salivary glands play an essential role in oral homeostasis by producing saliva, which protects oral tissues and maintains the oral environment. Despite growing interest in porcine models for translational biomedical research, the immunophenotypic characterization of porcine salivary glands remains limited in the literature, with few studies addressing their cytokeratin and contractile protein expression profiles. This gap constrains the ability to directly compare porcine and human glandular phenotypes and hinders the establishment of the pig as a validated salivary gland experimental model. T

Zanubrutinib monotherapy for IgG4-related head and neck disease.

OBJECTIVES: Immunoglobulin (Ig) G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is commonly treated with glucocorticoids and B-cell depletion, but cumulative toxicity and relapse underscore the need for alternative approaches. We evaluated the efficacy, safety, and immunological effects of Bruton's tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibition with zanubrutinib in active IgG4-RD. METHODS: In this phase 2, open-label, proof-of-concept trial, 10 participants with lacrimal and submandibular gland IgG4-RD received zanubrutinib 80 mg twice daily for up to 24 weeks without glucocorticoid induction or background immunosuppression.

Oral Spermidine Supplementation Preserves Submandibular Gland Function After Radiotherapy: Mechanistic Insights and Use in a Phase II Randomized Clinical Trial.

Radiotherapy for head and neck cancer commonly induces salivary gland dysfunction, resulting in xerostomia that substantially impairs quality of life after treatment. To identify protective strategies, we established the irradiation-induced submandibular glands (SMG) injury mice model and performed integrated proteomic and metabolomic profiling of gland tissue and saliva. Spermidine levels were significantly altered in irradiated SMG during the postradiotherapy recovery phase. Oral spermidine supplementation restored salivary flow, preserved acinar aquaporin-5 expression, and attenuated vacuol

Regenerative capacity of human dental pulp stem cells versus their exosomes on surgically induced submandibular gland defects in rats.

BACKGROUND: Surgical excision of salivary gland (SG) tumors frequently results in glandular tissue loss and long-term functional impairment. Human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) and their derived Exosomes (hDPSCs-Exos) have emerged as promising regenerative strategies. Therefore, the present study aimed to compare the regenerative capacity of hDPSCs versus their Exos on surgically induced defects in rats' submandibular SGs. METHODS: Seventy-two male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned to four groups (n=18). Group I (negative control): no surgical intervention. The remaining rats under

Anatomical Variations and Surgical Implications of the Cervical Branch of the Facial Nerve: A Systematic Review.

The cervical branch of the facial nerve (CBFN) innervates the platysma and contributes to lower facial animation. Due to its anatomical variability and proximity to critical structures, including the marginal mandibular branch, great auricular nerve, and submandibular gland, it is vulnerable to iatrogenic injury during neck dissection and rhytidectomy, which can lead to functional and aesthetic complications. This systematic review evaluates the CBFN's course, branching patterns, and surgical relevance. A PRISMA-compliant systematic review was conducted across PubMed, Web of Science, SCOPUS, a
