Fatal work-related motor vehicle crashes in the United States, 2011-2014: Analysis of matched data from the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries and the Fatality Analysis Reporting System.

INTRODUCTION: Motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) are the leading cause of work-related fatalities in the United States. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) matched and analyzed the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) and the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) to describe work-related MVCs. METHODS: BLS matched CFOI and FARS data for 2011-2014. The matching algorithm used a series of iterative matches allowing for increasing levels of flexibility. Descri

Observational study on seatbelt usage among rear-seat passengers in a developing metropolis: Evidence from Pedu intersection, Cape Coast, Ghana.

OBJECTIVE: Seatbelt use is crucial for reducing injuries and fatalities in crashes, yet rear-seat passengers are often neglected in safety studies, particularly in low- and middle-income countries like Ghana. This study investigates rear-seat passenger seatbelt usage at the Pedu intersection in Cape Coast. METHODS: A non-intrusive observational survey was conducted for three weeks during peak traffic hours. Utilizing SPSS, this study employed descriptive statistics and a binary logit regression to analyze seatbelt compliance rates and the factors associated with the compliance or defiance in

Impact of comorbidities on survival following major injury across different types of road users.

BACKGROUND: While comorbidities and types of road users are known to influence survival in people hospitalised with injury, few studies have examined the association between comorbidities and survival in people injured in road traffic crashes. Further, few studies have examined outcomes across different types of road users with different types of pre-existing comorbidities. This study aims to examine differences in survival within 30 days of admission among different road user types with and without different pre-existing comorbidities. METHOD: Retrospective cohort study using data for all ma

The Characterization of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Northeastern US Trucking Terminals.

In recent years, significant attention has been given to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) exposures given their mutagenic and carcinogenic properties. However, levels of exposure and the key determinants of exposure are not well defined for the trucking industry. We measured ultrafine particle characteristics at 10 trucking terminals of varying operating size and location in the Northeast region of the United States using particle concentration counter and a surface area analyzer. Multivariate mixed-effects linear regression models were used to assess determinants of the concentration o

Bus operators' responses to job strain: An experimental test of the job demand-control model.

The research aim was to test the Job Demand-Control (JDC) Model demands × Control interaction (or buffering) hypothesis in a simulated bus driving experiment. The buffering hypothesis was tested using a 2 (low and high demands) × 2 (low and high decision latitude) design with repeated measures on the second factor. A sample of 80 bus operators were randomly assigned to the low (n = 40) and high demands (n = 40) conditions. Demands were manipulated by increasing or reducing the number of stops to pick up passengers, and decision latitude by imposing or removing restrictions on the Rapid Transit

NIOSH national survey of long-haul truck drivers: Injury and safety.

Approximately 1,701,500 people were employed as heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers in the United States in 2012. The majority of them were long-haul truck drivers (LHTDs). There are limited data on occupational injury and safety in LHTDs, which prompted a targeted national survey. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health conducted a nationally representative survey of 1265 LHTDs at 32 truck stops across the contiguous United States in 2010. Data were collected on truck crashes, near misses, moving violations, work-related injuries, work environment, safety climate, driver

Determinants of seat belt use: A regression analysis with FARS data corrected for self-selection.

INTRODUCTION: We develop a methodology to use FARS data as an alternative to NOPUS in estimating seat belt usage. The advantages of using FARS over NOPUS are that (i) FARS is broader because it contains more variables relevant for policy analysis, (ii) FARS allows for easy multivariate regression analysis, and finally, (iii) FARS data is more cost-effective. METHODOLOGY: We apply a binary logit model in our analysis to determine the likelihood of seat belt usage given various occupant, vehicle, and built environment characteristics. Using FARS data, we derive coefficient estimates for categor

Potential Exposure to Ebola Virus from Body Fluids due to Ambulance Compartment Permeability in Sierra Leone.

INTRODUCTION: Prehospital care, including patient transport, is integral in the patient care process during the Ebola response. Transporting ill persons from the community to Ebola care facilities can stop community spread. Vehicles used for patient transport in infectious disease outbreaks should be evaluated for adequate infection prevention and control. PROBLEM: An ambulance driver in Sierra Leone attributed his Ebola infection to exposure to body fluids that leaked from the patient compartment to the driver cabin of the ambulance. METHODS: A convenience sample of 14 vehicles used to tran

Carbon monoxide intoxication.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, nonirritant gas that accounts for numerous cases of CO poisoning every year from a variety of sources of incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons. These include poorly functioning heating systems, indoor propane-powered forklifts, indoor burning of charcoal burning briquettes, riding in the back of pick-up trucks, ice skating rinks using propane-powered resurfacing machines, and gasoline-powered generators that are not in correct locations. Once CO is inhaled it binds with hemoglobin to form carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) with an affinity 200 times greater

Ischaemic heart disease mortality and years of work in trucking industry workers.

OBJECTIVES: Evidence from general population-based studies and occupational cohorts has identified air pollution from mobile sources as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. In a cohort of US trucking industry workers, with regular exposure to vehicle exhaust, the authors previously observed elevated standardised mortality ratios for ischaemic heart disease (IHD) compared with members of the general US population. Therefore, the authors examined the association of increasing years of work in jobs with vehicle exhaust exposure and IHD mortality within the cohort. METHODS: The authors calcu

Examining the influence of aggressive driving behavior on driver injury severity in traffic crashes.

In this paper, we capture the moderating effect of aggressive driving behavior while assessing the influence of a comprehensive set of variables on injury severity. In doing so, we are able to account for the indirect effects of variables on injury severity through their influence on aggressive driving behavior, as well as the direct effect of variables on injury severity. The methodology used in the paper to accommodate the moderating effect of aggressive driving behavior takes the form of two models--one for aggressive driving and another for injury severity. These are appropriately linked t

Analysis of teenage seat belt use: from the 2007 Missouri high school seat belt survey.

INTRODUCTION: This study analyzed high school teenagers' seat belt use based on the observational surveys of more than 15,000 teenagers at 150 schools and was conducted in the state of Missouri, U.S., in 2007. Since fatal car accidents involving high school teenagers are disproportionately high, and increased seat belt use saves lives in what would otherwise be fatal accidents, it is imperative that teenagers' safety be protected through an increase in use. METHOD: This study investigated various personal, vehicle, school, and locational factors associated with high school teenagers' seat bel

Exposure of trucking company workers to particulate matter during the winter.

This study analyzed the workplace area concentrations and the personal exposure concentrations to fine particulate (PM2.5), elemental carbon (EC), and organic carbon (OC) measured during the winter period in trucking companies. The averaged personal exposure concentrations at breathing zones of workers are much greater than those of the microenvironment concentrations. The highest difference between the area (microenvironment) and personal exposure concentrations was in the PM2.5 concentrations followed by the OC concentrations. The area concentrations of PM2.5, EC, and OC at a large terminal

Occupational risky business: injury prevention behaviors of farm women and children.

On farms in the United States, there are approximately 100 fatal and 32,800 nonfatal injuries annually in children 19 years and younger (United States Department of Labor, 1999). Up to 40% of nonfatally injured children are left with permanent disabilities. The impact of injury and death on children associated with farming in the United States is substantial. Research suggests that modeling of health behaviors may be an effective technique for the socialization of children's health behaviors. The purpose of this study is twofold. First, the study describes the participation and use of protecti

Characterization of agricultural tasks performed by youth in the Keokuk County Rural Health Study.

Injury and illness among youth working on farms are important problems. The types of farm tasks performed by children and the ages at which they begin these activities have not been well characterized. This cross-sectional study characterized agricultural work performed by adolescents in a rural Iowa county to better understand the patterns and extent of exposures to agricultural risk factors. This information will help to develop prevention strategies for agriculture-related injury and illnesses for children working on farms. The Keokuk County Rural Health Study is a prospective cohort study
