Multi-Trait GWAS Analyses of Blood Pressure Traits Provide Limited Gains in Locus Discovery or Polygenic Risk Score Performance Compared to Single-Trait GWAS.

High blood pressure (BP) represents a major cause of life-threatening cardiovascular conditions. GWAS have identified >2000 BP-associated signals. BP-GWAS usually analyze each BP trait individually. However, multi-trait GWAS may yield novel loci and improve polygenic risk scores (PRS) prediction. We explored whether multi-trait BP-GWAS can: (i) find novel loci undetected by single-trait GWAS; (ii) increase heritability estimates; (iii) improve PRS prediction of hypertension within the Lifelines Cohort Study. We investigate the utility of multi-trait GWAS approaches of correlated BP traits (sys

Predictive Value of the HALP Score for Post-Operative Atrial Fibrillation After Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery.

Post-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is common after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, occurring in 20% to 40% of patients and significantly increasing morbidity. The hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet (HALP) score, a composite nutritional-inflammatory index, is a prognostic marker in cardiovascular disease. However, its predictive value for POAF remains unestablished. We aimed to evaluate the predictive performance of 5 nutritional-inflammatory indices (HALP, Naples score, Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index [SII], neutrophil percentage-to-albumin ratio [NPAR], and C

A Novel Homozygous Nonsense Variant in DCHS1 in a Brazilian Patient With Van Maldergem Syndrome Type 1: Clinical Report and Literature Review.

Van Maldergem syndrome (VMLDS) is an ultra-rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by craniofacial dysmorphism, intellectual disability, hypotonia, skeletal anomalies, and feeding difficulties. It is caused by biallelic variants in DCHS1 or FAT4 genes. Fewer than 20 molecularly confirmed cases of VMLDS have been reported, and only a small subset involves DCHS1. We report a Brazilian male patient presenting with clinical features consistent with VMLDS, including neonatal hypotonia, Pierre Robin sequence, craniofacial dysmorphisms, camptodactyly, interphalangeal webbing, joint laxity, an

SMCHD1 loss rewires MYOD1 enhancer nexuses and chromatin accessibility landscapes in muscle cells.

SMCHD1 is a chromatin architectural protein linked to heterochromatin repression. Loss of function mutations of SMCHD1 cause facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy type 2 (FSHD2) through activation of the DUX4 transcription factor gene. However, it is unknown how SMCHD1 may regulate transcription independently of DUX4. Here, we show that SMCHD1 safeguards enhancer organization within the three-dimensional (3D) genome in human myoblasts. Loss of SMCHD1 leads to widespread gains in chromatin accessibility, aberrant transcription, and selective remodeling of myogenic transcription factor MYOD1 oc

Advances in altermagnet-based devices.

Altermagnetism has emerged as a third fundamental magnetic phase, uniquely combining the zero net magnetization and ultrafast dynamics of antiferromagnets with spin splitting typically reserved for ferromagnets(FMs). This review provides a systematic overview of the burgeoning field of altermagnets(AMs) and AM-based devices. We first present the symmetry principles that enable non-relativistic spin splitting. Then we examine representative material candidates-ranging from bulk systems to emergent van der Waals layers and metal-organic frameworks, and evaluate their applications in functional d

Multilayer membranes of graphene oxide nanosheets on cellulose filter papers for high-flux water filtration and high proton conductivity.

Two-dimensional graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets have emerged as multifunctional units for synthesizing nanostructured membranes for water filtration and proton transport technologies. In this research, advanced GO synthesis were conducted to produce GO dispersions at appropriate concentrations for building primary and secondary layers on cellulose filter papers (Cel). The primary GO layer on the largely porous Cel was formed by vacuum filtration of a GO dispersion 240 ppm. Subsequently, a secondary GO layer was built using a GO dispersion 60 ppm, covering microscale cracks on the primary layer.

Thermally Tunable Fading Memory Enabled by Opto-Ionic-Electronic Coupling in AgInP2S6-Gated Two-Dimensional Field-Effect Transistors.

In conventional field-effect transistors (FETs), the gate dielectric primarily provides electrostatic control of the channel and is engineered to remain chemically and electronically inert to ensure stable operation. Emerging studies, however, suggest that functional dielectrics integrated with two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors can introduce additional physical mechanisms that influence device behavior. Here, we investigate AgInP2S6 (AIPS), a high-κ van der Waals thiophosphate, as a functional top-gate dielectric in MoS2 field-effect transistors. The AIPS/MoS2 heterointerface exhibits couple

Vibrational dynamics of TODD-graphene nanosheets via molecular dynamics simulations and machine-learning surrogate models: implications for adaptive nanomechanical devices.

CONTEXT: TODD-Graphene (TODD-G), a porous two-dimensional carbon allotrope composed of interconnected 3-8-10-12 carbon rings, has recently emerged as a promising candidate for nanoelectromechanical and adaptive nanodevice applications due to its metallic conductivity, mechanical compliance, and topologically engineered phonon structure. In this work, the vibrational dynamics of TODD-G nanosheets were systematically investigated to establish structure-property relationships governing resonant behavior under varying geometric, thermal, mechanical, and defect conditions. Fundamental frequencies w

Pnictogen-codoping-induced magnetic anisotropy switching in Mn-doped WSTe Janus monolayers: a first-principles study.

In this work, magnetism engineering of the WSTe Janus monolayer is investigated using first-principles calculations. The pristine monolayer is a nonmagnetic semiconductor with an indirect band gap of 1.24 eV. Monolayer magnetization with a magnetic semiconductor nature is achieved by doping with P atoms, whereas As doping preserves the nonmagnetic nature and causes metallization of the monolayer. It is found that Mn doping leads to the emergence of ferromagnetism with a high Curie temperature of up to 876.13 K. In-plane magnetic anisotropy (IMA) is induced at small Mn-Mn separations (2Mn1), wh

Dynamics of Charge-Density-Wave Puddles in 2H-NbSe2.

Electronic phases in quantum materials are often governed by nanoscale inhomogeneity, where local order develops within spatially confined regions, or puddles. A prominent example is an incommensurate charge-density-wave (I-CDW) comprising locally commensurate domains. In 2H-NbSe2, such an I-CDW state persists alongside lattice anharmonicity and superconductivity, raising fundamental questions about the dynamical stabilization of CDW order in puddles. Here, using Raman scattering, we reveal a strong Fano-coupling between interlayer shear phonons and the CDW amplitude mode. Our time-resolved re

Two-Dimensional Indium Selenide for Next-Generation Photodetection: Interface Engineering, Device Architectures, and Emerging Applications.

Two-dimensional (2D) indium selenide (InSe) has emerged as a compelling semiconductor platform for next-generation photodetection because of its thickness-tunable bandgap, high carrier mobility, and strong light-matter interaction. Moreover, its nonlinear, ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and polarization‑related functionalities can be modulated by phase, layer number, stacking configuration, and device architecture. This Review summarizes the recent advances in InSe-based photodetectors through a structure-property-performance framework. We first discuss the crystal structures, thickness-depende
