Multiscale van der Waals Metallization via Peel-Front Strain Engineering.

Integrating van der Waals (vdW) devices into circuits requires metal electrodes and interconnects spanning nanometer to millimeter scales, yet mechanical deformation during electrode transfer compromises geometric integrity across this range. This work identifies strain localized at the carrier peel-front as a dominant factor influencing transferred metal geometry. Evaluating the peel-front strain against thickness-dependent strain tolerance of the carrier layer yields a mechanics-based framework that predicts the carrier thickness for geometry-preserving transfer. Operating within this regime

Layer Dependent Ferroelectricity and Electromechanically Coupled Polarization in Two-Dimensional 1T'-ReS2.

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials with sliding ferroelectricity exhibit an enormous potential for next-generation nanodevices. Among these, 1T'-ReS2 with an ultralow symmetry stands out as a pivotal candidate. However, the fundamental scientific mechanism underlying sliding ferroelectricity in 1T'-ReS2 remains poorly understood due to the complexity of its crystal structure. By integrating STEM, DFT calculations, and KPFM, this work resolves the correlation between AA/AB stacking and polarization in 1T'-ReS2. PFM and STEM characterizations further reveal that the observed ferr

Scalable, Simple, and Versatile Encapsulation of 2D Materials and Devices.

Air-sensitive 2D materials present fundamental challenges for device integration. Encapsulation is required to preserve intrinsic properties, yet conventional strategies require complicated fabrication workflows and fail with thicker flakes. We demonstrate that electron-beam (e-beam) evaporated aluminum oxide (AlOx) serves as an effective encapsulation layer and sacrificial fabrication mask, protecting sensitive flakes from air, photoresists, and chemicals. Unlike transfer-based approaches, this scalable technique requires no stacking and enables contacts without postencapsulation etching or h

Unveiling the Contact Physics of Molecular Crystal Sb2O3: From Conventional Metals to 2D Electride Electrodes for High-Performance Transistors.

Two-dimensional inorganic molecular crystals (IMCs) are emerging van der Waals materials with discrete molecular cages and wide bandgaps, but their contact physics with metal electrodes remains largely unexplored. Here, we report a first-principles study of monolayer Sb2O3, a prototypical IMC, contacted with bulk metals (Ag, Au, Cu, Ni, Pd, Pt) and 2D electrodes (graphene and electride Ba2N). Sb2O3 is dynamically and thermally stable, with an indirect bandgap of 3.26 eV and a work function of 5.68 eV. Cu forms a true n-type Ohmic contact; Ag and Ni form thin n-type Schottky barriers with moder

Dissecting Hydrophobic and Hydrogen-Bonding Contributions in the Rim Binding of Pyromellitic Diimides to β-Cyclodextrin.

The relative contributions of hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonding in cyclodextrin host-guest systems remain a fundamental challenge in supramolecular chemistry. In the present study, a series of pyromellitic diimide (PMDI) derivatives bearing alkyl substituents of different sizes was employed to investigate the origin of rim-binding interactions with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). NMR, ROESY and ICD studies established that PMDIs interact with β-CD through the narrow rim, with the alkyl substituents penetrating the cavity. The PMDI chromophore remained outside the cavity of the β-CD. In cont

Beyond the Geometric Mean: A Monopole-Based Combining Rule for Hydrogen-Bonding Cross-Interactions.

Intermolecular interactions govern the condensed-phase properties of substances as well as the thermodynamic behavior and phase equilibria of solutions. A central challenge in the molecular thermodynamics of mixing is the estimation of cross-interaction energies (εAB) between unlike molecules from the pure-substance properties via combining rules─a task complicated by the vast number of possible mixtures and the experimental difficulty of directly measuring cross-interaction energies. Classical Berthelot geometric-mean combining rules, originally derived for exchangeable van der Waals interact

Deep-Subwavelength and Broadband Quarter-Wave Retardation in Ultrathin Hyperbolic MoOCl2.

The miniaturization of polarization-controlling optical components is one of the central pursuits in nanophotonics. While traditional anisotropic materials require large propagation lengths to achieve the desired phase shifts, metasurfaces mitigate this size constraint but often introduce narrow operational bandwidths and high fabrication complexities. To bridge this gap, we introduce MoOCl2 as a promising material for ultracompact and broadband phase retardation. Building on its giant optical anisotropy, we experimentally demonstrate MoOCl2 quarter-wave plates with thicknesses down to 65 nm.

Growth and Infrared Light Emission of Emerging van der Waals Semiconductors: Black Phosphorus and Tellurium.

Infrared luminescent semiconductor materials and devices are fundamental to optoelectronic information technology. van der Waals (vdW) semiconductors, notably black phosphorus (BP) and tellurium (Te), possess a narrow direct bandgap and a low surface/Auger recombination rate, making them promising for infrared luminescence and light-emitting devices. The excitonic behavior and widely tunable band structure of such materials offer versatile pathways for modulating light emission, while the weak interlayer vdW interactions facilitate exceptional heterointegration capabilities. Surface Functionality and pH Govern Structural Dynamics and Drug Binding in PETIM and PAMAM Dendrimers.

Surface functionality and pH play a decisive role in governing the structural dynamics, hydration, and drug-binding behavior of dendrimers. Here, all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed on five generations of PAMAM (G1-G5) and PETIM (G2-G6) dendrimers with O-core and N-core architectures, functionalized with amine, carboxylic acid, or sugar terminal groups under different protonation states. Protonation of the tertiary branch-point amines expands the dendrimer structure, increases internal porosity and hydration, and enhances structural fluctuations across both families. In

Determination of ΔH and ΔS between syn- and anti-Isomers of CH3COOH in CH3CN by a Temperature-Dependent 2D IR Study.

Temperature-dependent Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) spectroscopic measurements are performed on CH3COOH dissolved in CH3CN over the temperature range of 4-62 °C. CH3COOH exists as two conformers, the syn- and anti-isomers, whose relative populations vary with temperature. At each temperature, their relative populations are determined by FTIR and 2D IR spectroscopy, supported by numerical simulations of the corresponding spectra. Accurate determination of the temperature-dependent populations enables the enthalpy difference (ΔH) and entropy difference (Δ

Moiré Mott Correlated Mosaics in Twisted Bilayer 1T-TaS2.

The tunability and twist engineering of van der Waals materials enable the emergence of electronic states not present in individual monolayers. Among them, monolayer 1T-TaS2 is a well-known Mott insulating system, whose star-of-David charge density wave reconstruction realizes an emergent triangular lattice of local magnetic moments. Interestingly, in its bulk form, the insulating gap is not correlation-driven but stems from interlayer coupling. Here, we exploit the stacking-dependent nature of the insulating gap to show that, in twisted 1T-TaS2 bilayers, the spatially dependent competition be

Spin-Coupled Coherent Acoustic Phonons in van der Waals Antiferromagnet NiPS3.

Controlling magnetic order with coherent lattice motion is a key frontier for ultrafast spintronic and quantum technologies, yet direct access to propagating spin-coupled acoustic modes in 2D antiferromagnets has been limited. Here, the propagating longitudinal and transverse acoustic phonons in the van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS3 are optically generated and detected by using ultrafast spectroscopy. Both the longitudinal and transverse acoustic branches exhibit a pronounced magnetic-state dependence: the shear-like transverse acoustic mode is amplified by nearly a factor of 3 below the Née

Polymer-Free Assembly of Unencapsulated van der Waals Heterostructure Devices.

van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures provide a versatile platform for exploring emergent quantum phenomena, yet their fabrication is often limited by interfacial contamination and incompatibility with surface-sensitive characterization. Here, we demonstrate muscovite mica as a polymer-free platform for assembling and patterning vdW heterostructure devices. Mica-mediated transfer enables clean exposed surfaces suitable for atomic-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) following mild thermal annealing, without aggressive postprocessing. Mica also serves as a mechanically robust support f

Highly Efficient Exciton Modulation in MoSe2/PdSe2 Heterostructures.

We report a pronounced ∼6-fold enhancement of room-temperature A-exciton emission in a type-I MoSe2/PdSe2 van der Waals heterostructure, yielding a photoluminescence quantum yield of 6%, as compared to ∼1% for as-exfoliated monolayer MoSe2. This unusual enhancement is accompanied by strong quenching of the B exciton, consistent with interlayer electronic coupling that redistributes exciton populations toward the radiative A-exciton channel. Power- and temperature-dependent measurements reveal a suppression of exciton-exciton annihilation and a crossover to quenched emission at a low temperatur

High-Mobility MoS2 Transistors Enabled by In2P3S9 Functional Dielectric Engineering and Interfacial Dipole Modulation.

Interfacial disorder, threshold-voltage instability, and mobility degradation present critical roadblocks for two-dimensional (2D) electronics. Conventional deposited high-κ oxides often introduce damage and defect states, whereas standard van der Waals (vdW) dielectrics function primarily as passive encapsulation layers. Here, we demonstrate a functional vdW dielectric interface strategy using layered In2P3S9, a wide-bandgap (∼2.9 eV) material with a high dielectric constant (about 24), which unifies charge-transfer modulation, dielectric screening, and gate coupling within a single vdW trans

Gate-Switchable Nonlinear Photoresponse in a Dangling-Bond-Free Nanowire Photodetector.

As intelligent optoelectronic systems advance, photodetectors with switchable nonlinear responses are increasingly desirable. However, conventional materials exhibit only sublinear behavior, and superlinear strategies rely on heterojunctions lacking reversible modulation. Here, we report one-dimensional Ta2Pd3Se8 nanowires obtained by electrochemical intercalation and exfoliation. Their dangling-bond-free chain architecture suppresses carrier scattering and photogenerated recombination, yielding an electron mobility of 38.95 cm2 V-1 s-1, a responsivity of 58.14 A/W, a photoconductive gain of 1

Sliding Disassembly of van der Waals Heterostructures.

Many recent advances in our understanding of two-dimensional electron systems stem from van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures. The assembly process relies on the weak bonding across interfaces between layered vdW compounds, making it possible to construct exceptionally clean heterostructures from chemically and structurally distinct materials. Here we demonstrate an additional, dynamic degree of freedom afforded by vdW interfaces, wherein we use microstructured polymer stamps to disassemble and reconfigure vdW heterostructures by deterministic, reversible, and nondestructive sliding. We apply t

Uncertainty-Aware Reactive Force Field Potentials for Materials via Physics-Informed Bayesian Optimization.

Bridging density functional theory (DFT) fidelity with reactive molecular dynamics scales remains a fundamental computational material science challenge. Although reactive force field (ReaxFF) potentials use numerical bond-order terms, their calibration is an ill-posed, high-dimensional inverse problem. This study introduces uncertainty-aware ReaxFF potentials via a physics-informed Bayesian optimization (PIBO) framework. This framework embeds physical bounds, positivity constraints, and stability priors directly into the optimization loop, employing an adaptive Gaussian process surrogate with

Neutron Total Scattering Investigation of the Dissolution Mechanism of Chitotriose in Alkali/Urea Aqueous Solutions.

Despite the promise of alkali/urea aqueous solutions as green solvents, the atomistic-scale mechanism of chitin dissolution remains elusive. In contrast to the ability to dissolve cellulose, the order of alkali effectiveness for dissolving chitin is potassium hydroxide (KOH) as the best and lithium hydroxide (LiOH) as the worst. Employing chitotriose as a model compound and utilizing neutron total scattering coupled with Empirical Potential Structure Refinement (EPSR) as the principal analytical tools, we compared its KOH/urea and LiOH/urea aqueous solutions and elucidated the intrinsic mechan
