Repressor Element-1 (RE1)-Silencing Transcription Factor (REST) homeostatically regulates neural activity by repressing a large cluster of neural genes. However, whether REST can be regulated by calcium(2+) (Ca2+)-activated kinases is unknown. We investigated Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinases (CaMKs) as upstream regulators of REST fate and activity. We show that REST is phosphorylated by CaMKIV at Ser322 site in the fifth-to-sixth Zn-finger domain linker. A phosphomimic mutant at Ser322 decreased REST repressor activity and caused its transition to the cytosol, followed by degradation.

Conventional pulse oximetry provides continuous non-invasive arterial oxygen saturation, whereas arterial and venous blood gas analysis provides intermittent reference measurements. Neither modality continuously monitors saturation at a selected deep intravascular site. Despite significant climate variability in the Northern Hemisphere ~50,000-12,000 years ago, the potential for vertebrates to periodically thrive in the glacial Arctic Ocean has been largely overlooked because ecosystem productivity was assumed to be too low. Here, we analyze fish otoliths preserved in deep-sea sediments and find that two Arctic endemic cod species, ice cod (Arctogadus glacialis) and polar cod (Boreogadus saida), lived at 87-89 °N ~ 48,000-35,000 years ago and reappeared at the onset of the Holocene ~12,000 years ago. We present here a draft genome of the photosynthetic sacoglossan sea slug, Elysia crispata (ecotype crispata) generated with a reference guided approach using Illumina short reads and long PacBio HiFi reads.
