Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) is a globally vital oilseed crop for edible oil, biofuel and animal feed production, yet its yield and quality are severely threatened by a narrow genetic foundation, scarce germplasm and recurrent abiotic stresses including drought and salinity. Mediator subunits have been proven to be critical for abiotic stress tolerance in model plants, but systematic research on the Brassica napus Mediator (BnaMED) gene family and its stress regulatory mechanism in Brassica napus remains largely lacking. In this study, we identified 189 BnaMED members phylogenetically clustere

Bipolar disorder is characterized by marked circadian and metabolic vulnerability, but direct evidence linking the timing of food intake to its course remains sparse. This structured narrative review examines chrono-nutritional disruption, including irregular meal timing, nocturnal eating, prolonged or inconsistent fasting, eating-window variability, and eating jet lag, as a potential behavioral correlate and mechanistic contributor to bipolar instability. PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched for literature published from January 2000 to 30 June 2026, supplemented by predef

Members of the Flaviviridae encode XRN1-resistant RNA structures (xrRNAs) within their 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) that stall the cellular 5'→3' exoribonuclease 1 (XRN1), resulting in the accumulation of subgenomic flavivirus RNAs (sfRNAs). Zika virus (ZIKV) contains two such elements, xrRNA1 and xrRNA2, which generate sfRNA1 and sfRNA2, respectively. A third sfRNA species (sfRNA3) has also been described. Building on evidence that sequences within the orthoflavivirus UTRs modulate host range, we replaced the xrRNA1 element in the ZIKV genome with xrRNA1 or xrRNA1-like elements from nine ev

Antimicrobial resistance is a major global health challenge, and food-producing animals and foods of animal origin may contribute to the dissemination of resistant bacteria through the food chain. This review aimed to summarize recent evidence on extended-spectrum β-lactamase- and carbapenemase-producing Escherichia coli in food animals and animal-derived foods across Middle East and North Africa countries. A structured literature search was conducted to identify peer-reviewed studies published between 2016 and 2025. Data regarding country, sample type, prevalence, and resistance genes were ex

Plant-derived peptides represent a rich source of structurally diverse and biologically potent scaffolds, characterized by high stability and a wide range of mechanisms of action. This review examines the structure-activity relationships (SAR) of these peptides, focusing on how key structural features-including disulfide connectivity, loop architecture, charge distribution, and backbone cyclization-govern their biological activity, selectivity, and toxicity. Representative peptide families such as cyclotides, defensins, thionins, and snakins are discussed to highlight conserved structural moti

Background Clinical postings expose undergraduate medical students to considerable academic and emotional stress, which may adversely affect learning, wellbeing, and professional development. Brief structured interventions incorporating coping skills training have been proposed to mitigate this stress, but data from resource-constrained clinical training settings remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a brief structured intervention on perceived stress and active coping among undergraduate MBBS students during their Medicine clinical posting. Methodology A pre-post interven

The diversity of animal shapes and colors raises questions about the mechanisms by which species acquire complex phenotypes considering that they evolve under both natural and sexual selection. Tanagers employ a diversity of signals in social interactions which, coupled with diverse diets that include fruits and flowers, make them an excellent group for studying how diet influences the evolution of communication signals. Using Bayesian linear mixed models, plumage reflectance data for 291 tanager species (∼77% of species), and appropriate techniques for compositional diet data, we show that pe

Chemical contaminants can disrupt predator-prey dynamics in agroecosystems, particularly through intraguild predation (IGP), a key interaction influencing population structure and dynamics. The objective of this study was to investigate intraguild predation between Amblyseius largoensis (Muma) and Euseius alatus DeLeon (Mesostigmata: Phytoseiidae), with particular emphasis on how an extraguild food resource (pollen), sublethal exposure to the acaricide abamectin, and their combined effects influence predator feeding behavior, oviposition, and population dynamics. Adult females of both predator

The habenula is a conserved dorsal diencephalic hub that integrates information related to motivational state, behavioural flexibility, and cognitive control. In many vertebrates, it displays pronounced left-right asymmetry, yet how structural lateralisation is reflected in circuit architecture remains poorly understood, partly because phylogenetically informative lineages remain undersampled. Here, we characterise habenular connectivity in the Senegal bichir (Polypterus senegalus), a member of an early-diverging ray-finned fish lineage with marked habenular asymmetry. Using neuronal tracing,

In a soft biological tissue with a fibrous network and interstitial fluid, osmotic pressure arises primarily from Donnan ion effects and macromolecular confinement, typically ranging from kPa to hundreds of kPa, and is mechanically balanced by stresses in the solid matrix. This study introduces a new data-driven framework based on the Virtual Fields Method (VFM) for identifying full-field material parameters and discovering constitutive models of osmotic pressure in biphasic hyperelasticity. In this framework, a two-step VFM strategy is proposed: (1) the virtual fields with zero-trace strains

Bovine alphaherpesvirus 1 (BoAHV1) is a reproductively important pathogen whose presence in bovine semen restricts international trade. The increasing use of controlled breeding programs highlights the need for effective viral inactivation strategies. This study evaluated the antiviral activity of the antimicrobial peptide indolicidin in bovine semen experimentally inoculated with BoAHV1. Indolicidin was synthesized by solid-phase peptide synthesis. Antiviral activity and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) were determined in MDBK cell cultures. The peptide was then tested in inoculated sem

This study examined how Prunella vulgaris polysaccharides (PVP, 0, 2% and 4% w/w in the O/W emulsion) and ultrasonic treatment (0 and 30 min) affect key quality attributes of reduced-fat pork batter. Combined PVP and ultrasound significantly improved (P < 0.05) emulsifying stability and water-holding capacity, cutting cooking loss from 11.75% to 5.88%. PVP alone enhanced water-protein-polysaccharide interactions: it shortened T21 and T22 relaxation times, raised immobilized water from 86.18% to 93.95%, and lowered overall water mobility. It also altered myofibrillar protein structure, reducing

Sweet potato feathery mottle virus (SPFMV), a member of the Potyviridae family and Potyvirus genus, severely affects the yield and quality of sweet potato. Internal ribosome entry site (IRES) elements were first identified in animal RNA viruses and have since been identified in plant RNA viruses and eukaryotic mRNAs. Herein, we show that the 5' untranslated region (UTR) of SPFMV possesses IRES activity and contains the complete IRES sequence. Furthermore, the 3'UTR can synergistically enhance the cap-independent translation efficiency of the 5'UTR. Within the 5'UTR of SPFMV, three stem-loop st

Type V CRISPR-Cas12 systems evolved from transposon-encoded TnpB proteins, with type V-U4 nucleases (Cas12n) as evolutionary intermediates linking TnpB to larger type V effectors. Despite their compact size, most Cas12n orthologs, including Corynebacterium glutamicum Cas12n (CgCas12n), exhibit low genome-editing activity in mammalian cells. Here, we engineered CgCas12n using an arginine enrichment strategy, generating a variant with approximately 60-fold enhanced editing efficiency. Concurrently, we optimized the sgRNA scaffold to reduce its size without compromising activity. These improvemen

Developmental neurotoxicity (DNT) potential of (agro)chemicals is assessed in rodents according to OECD Test Guidelines (TG) 426 (DNT) or 443 (Extended One-Generation Reproductive Toxicity; EOGRTS) incorporating a DNT cohort. While the EOGRTS evaluates reproductive and neurotoxicity endpoints across multiple life stages, key differences in study design, dose selection, and exposure duration between OECD 426 and OECD 443 can complicate data interpretation and impact hazard identification and risk assessment. This manuscript evaluates current DNT testing strategies and examines the feasibility o

Virtual fencing (VF) allows cattle producers to manage grazing without additional physical fencing. Although VF is effective for managing one cattle group within a virtual paddock, its efficacy for managing multiple groups within the same pasture, separated only by VF boundaries, remains unclear. This capability could support flexible forage allocation among cattle groups with different nutritional requirements. The objective was to evaluate whether VF could maintain separation between adjacent cattle groups without physical cross-fencing. In this 8-week crossover study, 39 VF-trained yearling

Shrimp processing side streams are increasingly considered circular resources, yet their food use remains limited by a gap between compound recovery and ingredient-level validation in target food systems. This review examines how head and cephalothorax fractions, shells, trimming residues, hepatopancreas-associated materials, and process liquors can be directed toward fit-for-purpose ingredient platforms, including protein hydrolysates, savory bases, carotenoid-rich oils, chitin/chitosan systems, and multifunctional composites. Food use is constrained by sensory liabilities and matrix performa

Plant-derived decellularized scaffolds have emerged as sustainable and structurally versatile biomaterials for tissue engineering; however, their potential for supporting early osteogenic responses remains insufficiently explored. In this study, decellularized scaffolds derived from Apple (Malus pumila), Carrot (Daucus carota), Capsicum (Capsicum annuum), and Zucchini (Cucurbita pepo) were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and their cellular responses were evaluated using the A
